Tigers Close To Signing Octavio Dotel

By Luke Adams 2 | December 7, 2011 at 10:31pm CDT

10:31pm: All that's left for Dotel and the Tigers to work out is the length of the contract, tweets Rosenthal. A one-year deal with a vesting option seems like the most likely outcome, Rosenthal adds.

8:37pm: The Tigers are close to a deal with Dotel, tweets Danny Knobler of CBS Sports.

6:22pm: The Cardinals are the other team Dotel is considering. Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch tweets that Detroit seems to have the edge, but Dotel remains "enamored" with the Cardinals.

5:35pm: The Tigers have made an "aggressive" offer for Dotel, tweets Morosi.

4:44pm: The Tigers are considered the favorite for Dotel, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, adding that the other finalist is a National League team.

4:20pm: Free agent reliever Octavio Dotel has narrowed his decision to two teams and expects to make a decision soon, tweets Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports.

Actually each of them has played for 12 teams, assuming you count Montreal/Washington as the same team, in which case, Stairs has 13, but if Dotel does sign with the Tigers they would be tied again.

Tried to post this earlier, but it looks like it failed…

Enrique Rojas says (in Spanish, which is why it may not have been included here) that both offers are 1 year offers.  Apparently Dotel is trying to squeeze a second year out of one of them.

face it, the tigers NEED a bullpen arm in the 6-7th innings who can sit down righties.  Al Al can’t be trusted to be healthy.  Does it need to be Dotel…..no, but it wouldn’t be a bad signing probably.

Detroit’s bullpen would be looking pretty decent with this move.

Especially if Alburqurque(?) can ever recover from the line drive off his head. He was never the same after that

Yea it would.  Valverde, Benoit, Coke, Alburquerque, Schlereth, Dotel, and then (personal favorite) Pauley as the long man (former starter who is also surprisingly adept at getting out left handers).

Perry, Wilk, Below, Ni, Villareal, Weinhardt, Hoffman, and Stohr as depth.  Hey, that’s a full AAA bullpen!
