Orioles Return Rule 5 Pick Nestor Cortes To Yankees

By Jeff Todd | April 13, 2018 at 8:09pm CDT

The Orioles have returned Rule 5 selection Nestor Cortes to the Yankees, per a club announcement. The southpaw was designated for assignment recently.

Cortes took a spot on the Opening Day roster but coughed up four runs on ten hits and four walks in his 4 2/3 innings to begin the season. That led the O’s to part with the second of their three Rule 5 picks this season. Only righty Pedro Araujo remains among this year’s picks.

The Yanks will pay $50K to their division rivals to take back the rights to Cortes, who will not need to be added to the 40-man roster. He will try to pick back up where he left off in an impressive 2017 season, when he spent most of the season in the upper minors and ended with a 2.06 ERA over 104 2/3 total innings.

To his credit, he did get put in bad situations but at the end of the day you gotta get outs. Hes gonna latch on somewhere soon.

What do you mean “latch on somewhere”? He was returned to the Yankees, and he’ll probably join their triple A rotation. Might even get some major league starts.

Really hard to tell if his stuff can get ML hitters out. The odds seem against it.

How long does Araujo last on the 25 man roster? Granted, that’s a really nice changeup, but it’s all the kid has. 90-91mph fb and iffy command

Duquette has found some gems via the rule 5 draft before, but it looks like he struck out this past winter.

The description of his stuff above is inaccurate. He stays on the club all year long (like Santander last year).

Santander spent time on the DL last year, so he still has to be on the 25 man roster for like a month or something like that until they carry his full rights.

Araujo looks like he belongs. Kid is a beast. They love Cortes, just don’t have the room for him.

Agree 100% that Duquette is one of the best scraping the outer edges for talent and finding it, he always has been and did the same with boston with some of his miracle finds via the draft and low level trades (Brian daubach, Lee tinsley etc). Just think after watching this araujo kid he’s going to have areally tough time after book gets out on him

I do agree that Duquette has mined some gems through out the scrapheap. But at some point there is a reality that if you are miningso often your team isn’t very good to begin with. The fact that you are able to add multiple fringe players on an annual basis is not a good thing.

It was real scary when they were going to have three. He has picked up some useful players but no career starters so far. Flaherty was closest.

Tigers like their Rule 5 guy. He can fly and make good catches in big Comerica Park and bats Both ways….when he hits. He sticks!
