White Sox reliever Danny Farquhar has been placed on the 10-day disabled list after passing out in the club’s dugout. According to Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune, the sudden collapse was caused by a brain aneurysm. He was immediately hospitalized following the incident, and is currently in stable but critical condition. We at MLBTR will be keeping Farquhar in our thoughts during what is certainly a scary situation.
More notes from around MLB…
- Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports suggests that the White Sox could be a team to watch in the upcoming Manny Machado sweepstakes this offseason. A rival GM tells Heyman that the Sox could be a “dark horse” to sign the superstar shortstop. Concurrent with this rumor, via Heyman, is the pattern of owner Jerry Reinsdorf being occasionally willing to make a big splash in the free agent market (though I’d like to point out that they’ve never made a splash of anything close to this size).
- A pair of Cardinals relievers are making progress in their returns from injury, which would provide a welcome cavalry to the club’s bullpen. Left-hander Ryan Sherriff is scheduled to throw a live bullpen session on Wednesday at Triple-A Memphis, according to Joe Trezza of MLB.com. He’s currently still wearing a metal shank in his shoe under the fractured toe in order to protect it. Meanwhile, Trezza adds, righty Sam Tuivailala threw two bullpen sessions this week, and will throw a third one tomorrow. The downside of these imminent returns is that the Cardinals will be facing a difficult roster decision when they decide to activate these two relievers.
- Bill Chastain of MLB.com tweets that Rays third baseman Matt Duffy is “cautiously optimistic” that he’ll be able to be activated from the 10-day disabled list when he’s first eligible on April 27th. He did some soft-toss hitting yesterday along with a few throwing drills, and is progressing nicely in an attempt to return quickly from a hamstring injury suffered in Monday’s game.

The Cardinals should be poised to make a trade, they have 4 relievers coming off the DL, they have 5 players raking at Memphis and they have a glaring need for more offense. Stay tuned…

Agreed…when I clicked on the article I actually thought it was going to say something about the cardinals and Machado…but that is a tough spot for them…question…When will they give up on Carpenter?
fasbal1
Carpenter looks uninterested most of the time. His playing time is on verge of being slashed, unless his move today to lead off spot jump starts him. He has not been good for a while.

What nice problems to have. No wonder they’ve vaulted into first place where they’ve been for most of the time this century.

Although, I think he’s worth 300 Mil. I think Machado will have to settle for less. I just don’t see enough of a market to drive the price up.
Priggs89
Wow. Heyman really went out on a limb with that one. Nice work.

A pitcher gets placed on the DL and is in critical condition and that only warrants a Quick Hit? Seriously?
Priggs89
It was also put in an “Injury Notes” post a little over 2 hours before this one. This was an update on that… What more would you like?
geejohnny
Maybe I’m no Dr but to me a brain aneurysm is a bit more serious than a typical baseball injury. But that’s just me.
Priggs89
Again… What more would you like?
Or are you complaining just for the sake of complaining?

Probably this reason

Considering that the 6 yrs/$68MM international free agent contract the White Sox inked Jose Abreu to back in October of 2013 is their largest ever, I would definitely agree that Manny Machado would be a “dark horse” candidate to wind up on the South Side of Chicago. That being said, the White Sox have reportedly made higher offers in the past including a losing bid estimated in the $90-100MM range for another international free agent, Masahiro Tanaka, some three months after the Abreu signing.
Jerry Reinsdorf also signed FA slugger Albert Belle to a 5 yrs/$55MM deal back in 1996 which made him the highest paid player in MLB at the time. That contract also had a clause in it that guaranteed Belle would remain one of the top-3 highest paid players in baseball. Belle exercised that clause after two seasons and the White Sox thankfully passed on granting him a raise which gave that particular contract the distinction of being one of the first with a player opt-out, something which is much more common in today’s market. Belle wound up signing one final contract with the Orioles that once again made him MLB’s highest paid player but his career ended prematurely two years later due to a degenerative hip condition.

Albert Belle was the first name I thought of with the reference that Jerry Reinsdorf has shown a willingness to spend money when it’s believed to be smart. Your point on Abreu is also spot on, and you could also point to Luis Robert last year. Now 10-yr $300 million to Machado isn’t in the same league as those others, but still, Reinsdorf’s past actions, at least to me, don’t negate the possibility.

I was going to point out Albert Belle as well.. George Bell was another one that came to mind.. I don’t remember the details but I remember him being one of the most well known sluggers at the time.. Going even further back Carlton Fisk was chased by quite a few teams in 1981 and signed with the White Sox. While they seem to have no problem chasing top sluggers and I would make them stronger contenders for Machado. The only thing holding me back from saying they are strong contenders would be that Anderson’s bat pretty much only profiles for SS. They could move him to 2nd and Moncada to 3rd. I think for a $300 million contract Machado would probably move back to 3rd though. With a smile on his face.
They do prefer the trading route to acquiring top pitchers though. The only pitcher that comes to mind that they signed to a big contract was David Robertson. Although he is solid, he in no way is one of the top closers in baseball.

The most important detail regarding George Bell coming to the White Sox was his trade for a younger outfielder named Sammy Sosa. The season before it was the Cubs who signed Bell as a free agent but he was more suited to be a DH than a LF.

Man, that’s scary with Farquhar. Wish him a full recovery.
IronBallsMcGinty
I completely agree and hope for more than just playing baseball that he fully recovers. However, I do wish they had brought up Thyago instead of Infante.

Prayers for Danny.

Prayers for Danny, and Carlton Fisk was a pretty big splash skill wise, not really on the cash side though.

Fight it Farq! Pull through this and recover fast. Prayers to you and your family. These events are really scary and usually are fatal. The fact they got him to a hospital that quick is nothing but spectacular work by White Sox medical staff.
Fight it Farq!
