Cubs, Jason Adam Agree To Minor League Deal

By Steve Adams | January 14, 2020 at 8:39pm CDT

The Cubs have agreed to a deal with free-agent reliever Jason Adam, tweets Robert Murray. It’s a minor league pact with an invite to Major League Spring Training, MLB.com’s Jordan Bastian tweets. Adam, who is represented by Platinum Sports, has already passed his physical.

The 28-year-old Adam posted a 2.91 ERA in 21 2/3 innings with the Blue Jays in 2019 but was cut loose in early December. Looking beyond that ERA, however, Adam’s 3.95 FIP and 6.20 xFIP are more alarming. His 18-to-10 K/BB ratio, 25 percent ground-ball rate and .237 average on balls in play all serve as red flags as well. On the flipside of things, the spin rate on Adam’s heater landed in the 98th percentile among MLB hurlers, and he averaged a hearty 94.7 mph on the pitch. He’s also pitched to a combined 2.14 ERA in 42 innings at the Triple-A level across the past two seasons.

If Adam does ultimately make the roster, he has two minor league option years remaining, so he can be shuttled between Chicago and Triple-A Iowa if the team sees fit. He also has less than a full season of Major League service at present, so he wouldn’t even be arbitration-eligible until the 2021-22 offseason at the earliest — and more likely not until the 2022-23 offseason.

They signed a few minor league deals. What makes you think that they’re worse than the pirates. They have plenty of money. The owner is just cheap.

I’m ready for this kris Bryant for a bag of peanuts trade !

Seriously though. Braves are desperate. Cubs may be able to squeeze Riley and one of Anderson or wright. If so that’ll be about as good of return they could get

The cubs don’t have to trade Kris Bryant. If they don’t get what they want they don’t move him. They are a whopping 2 million over the luxury tax. They play it out until July and see if they are actually contending. If not they could easily flip Quintana or reassess the Bryant market. Shockingly I am not sure any contender in the NL has actually improved.

I’d like to see one article about Bryant being a clubhouse cancer? Every article I read is the exact opposite. This grievance was filed by Boras/aka players union 5 years ago. This isn’t new nor has it been a clubhouse issue. It’s a player union issue and they decided to use Bryant as their best shot to win a manipulation case.

Cubs don’t want Riley. League has him figured out and he didn’t adjust. We’ve seen this before in mike olt. Cubs can get waters and Wright without braves desperation, Pache might hit the table if they get desperate.

He was 22 and got absolutely demolished by mlb pitching. This guy isn’t ready to be an everyday mlb player. Maybe in 2-3 years, maybe. That doesnt really help the cubs now and if he has another down year his trade value vanishes. Kyle Wright pretty much in the same boat except he is 24.

Yeah Les Chesterfield, bc you’re a MLB general manager, and you know the value of these players. Unfortunately for the Braves, Riley fell off a cliff after his torrid start. KB has already won a World Series, Rookie of the Year, National League MVP!, and is a 3-time all-star. This will be his age 28 season in a contract year. Means he will leave it all out on the field. Which he already does. He is an excellent, base runner. Literally a great base runner. If someone goes down anywhere besides SS and CF, he can fill in there. And could there in a pinch too. The Braves also just lost J. Donaldson peerage as well. And these other guys are unproven. So Chester, you are wrong. I don’t think you could be any wronged. If you need anymore schoolin…. holla at boi!!!!’

All the accolades you mentioned are in the PAST. Bryant is an over-rated (3.6 WAR) two year rental at best.

In five years he’s put up 25.1 war and was injured a good portion of 2018. 3.6 WAR is more than likely his absolute floor for the next two years.

Did you sign up for the cancer maintenance program ? Rest of the world wants to get rid of cancer. Cubs fans pretend like some good maintenance is all they need. Bryant has no desire to be a cub and his numbers from last two seasons reflect that. Either that or be peaked and is now on the downside of his career a la Kerry Wood style. Either way, there’s one team out there that needs him and can provide the mlb ready players in return and that’s Atlanta. Be thrilled w Riley and a top pitching prospect! The state of the trade market reflects y’all getting a fraction of that value

Les, Bryant has been repeatedly quoted that he would like to remain with the Cubs for his entire career—the caveat has always been that he get a “fair market deal.” There is nothing, nothing at all reported he has no desire to remain a Cub and if the Cubs could get his numbers from the last two seasons from all the players in their lineup, they probably would have won two more championships. Please throw out your opinion, I will respect that (your assessment of his trade value), but don’t randomly make things up like he’s a cancer. And to your point of him being on the “downside” of his career—it is extremely difficult to win Rookie of the Year and/or MVP every season.

Lol. He’s suing his employer and although he’s in his prime his stats are declining. I’m completely convinced people from Chicago have absolutely no clue what the word fact or evidence means.

Its funny how anyone thinks the Cubs are not in control here. Braves are platooning at 3B with Camargo/Riley and in the OF with Markakis/Inciarte. If the Cubs don’t get what they expect to get from any team then they keep Bryant and find other options to get under luxury tax. As for the Braves, their window just opened. Its probably in their best interest they fix at least one of those two holes – whether that’s Bryant or not.

So getting hurt is stats declining?

        • wordonthestreet

Oh Les your ignorance is funny. Bryant is not suing the Cubs and that is a fact. Of course you do not know what fact means.

        • Les Chesterfield

There’s no control- the market dictates the price. Today lindor, who’s a better in every aspect of the game and plays more of a premier position isn’t worth Nick Senzel. So there’s absolutely no chance y’all are going to get any where near the value u dream. Get over it

        • Les Chesterfield

Mike. All news is fake news. Read between the lines and use that thing between your ears. This is an easy read for anyone who has the ability to set their emotion aside

What a tool! Any Cubs fan knows Bryant is a great clubhouse guy. Or any non-Cubs fan, don’t pretend to know what you’re talking about… And the effort on the field? Again, don’t pretend. How many MLB players can say they have been College player of the year, Rookie of the Year and MVP? The guy has had injuries the last two years. Troll somewhere else…

That’s pretty wishful thinking Wrek305. I can see 3, maybe 4 if the Cubs throw in a prospect. Four players in their top 50, I just don’t see it.

What y’all are missing is that the ship has already sailed. The window is shut the chance to win championships is over. The team had already imo loaded. That’s why y’all are begging to fire Theo after you already fired one of the best managers in baseball. I will be enjoying the first few months of the season to see the demise sink into your knuckle head though. Never thought I’d root against the cubs since they have been a joke of an organization but after meeting cubs fans here – I’m ready to see em crash and burn
