Jacob deGrom Leaves Start Early

By Connor Byrne | September 16, 2020 at 7:06pm CDT

7:46pm: deGrom is dealing with a right hamstring spasm, the team announced.

7:06pm: Mets ace Jacob deGrom left his start against the Phillies on Wednesday after two innings, Scott Lauber of the Philadelphia Inquirer was among those to report. The reason for deGrom’s exit isn’t yet known, but he met with trainers after his final inning. The Mets then replaced deGrom with right-hander Michael Wacha.

DeGrom departed his outing after yielding three earned runs, making it his worst start of 2020. The back-to-back NL Cy Young winner entered Wednesday in strong contention for the award again with a 1.67 ERA/1.96 FIP and 13.17 K/9 against 2.17 BB/9 over 54 innings. Prior to Wednesday, deGrom hadn’t allowed more than two earned runs in any of his starts this season.

There would be no replacing deGrom for the Mets if he has to miss time, but the fact that they went into Wednesday at 21-27 makes it unlikely they’ll earn a playoff trip, anyway. With that in mind, the bigger question may be how a deGrom injury would impact the NL Cy Young race, where Yu Darvish and Trevor Bauer are also among those competing for the honors.

They’re not counting chickens. deGrom’s era jumped to over 2 by giving up 3 runs in two innings. He’s likely eliminated from the Cy Young race unless something similar happens to Bauer and Darvish.

The Cy Young is about the best pitcher, not who’s most valuable to his team. That’s the MVP award. Wainwright’s ERA is over a run higher than either of those guys.

So now Trevor Bauer is going to go into free agency with a CY Young (probably). Good for him. I like his content on Youtube, and I like what he has done to market he game in general.

As for Degrom and the Mets, this sucks. The Mets now don’t have a pitching staff. This is bad. They will miss the playoffs. Crap.

The Mets would probably be in better shape with a healthy Syndergaard and Stroman, but I think it’s a big leap to assume that it would be a top rotation.

Not to mention, they have other issues (some of which a lot of fans aren’t interested in acknowledging)

FWIW, Mets’ announcers are saying it’s back spasms which really could be a precautionary thing. He wasn’t looking very sharp today, so why chance it? Wishing him well. No one is better on the mound. The game is more enjoyable with him in it, even though he usually owns my team.

Two effective innings. That should wrap up another well deserved Cy Young. deGrom is 4-1 and the Mets are in 4th, just as I predicted. Sorry Trevor Bauer, you Scherzer and Ryu will all be screwed out of the award. Three straight years for the guy that leads his team to the playoffs, well, maybe not.

You might have a point on Scherzer (who also had an outstanding season in 2018, and I wouldn’t have argued with him winning it) but Ryu was not screwed out of the award in any way. DeGrom’s numbers were better overall, and any advantages Ryu had were tiny. Bauer will win it if his numbers hold, and deservedly so.

Focusing on team success and playoffs is silly in general when it comes to the Cy Young, but it’s especially silly when 2 of the 3 guys you named also pitched for teams that missed the playoffs.

The best NL pitcher I’ve seen is Dinelson Lamet. He’s 3-1, 2.12, with a 0.89 WHIP and .171 BA against. Just 36 hits in 59.1 innings with 17 walks and 79 strikeouts. No one is throwing the ball better right now. He’s the guy I’d least like to face in October. Right now I’d go with him for Cy Young and Freddie Freeman in a cakewalk for MVP

Rookie of the Year is up in the air. Though he came up late, I’m inclined to go with Sixto Sanchez. He’s the best of the rookie pitchers, though Dustin May has been excellent and Tony Gonsolin is coming on strong with a 1.51 ERA. 0.79 WHIP and .176 BA Against. Cronenworth, Bohm, and Gimenez have been best among position players, though none have had the impact of those three pitchers with Sanchez being the best of the best,

I know everyone likes to express their opinion, but there is no way of knowing who will win it yet. With the limited amount of innings, anyone in contention can still blow up like deGrom. Conversely, someone (including deGrom) can throw two gems to move ahead of the pack. As of today, it should go to Bauer, but that can certainly change.

The thinking is, why bother pitching deGrom and risking further injury? Mets are essentially eliminated even prior to this injury. Keep your ace healthy for 2021. Even without missing a start, it’s hard to make up for 3 runs in two innings in a tight CY race.

I definitely agree that they shouldn’t risk it if the Mets are out of it. However, they have five games before he would need to start again. If they make up ground (unlikely), he will be pitching for a chance to make the playoffs in addition to a 3rd CY. If they don’t make up ground, the Mets should shut him down. deGrom is such a competitor, he will likely want to pitch either way.

With two dominant starts he absolutely would still have a chance to win the CY. Think 14 innings, no runs, 20 strikeouts. Of course, it would depend on how the other candidates perform as well.

They are all competitors. If that’s true of deGrom, then treat the two innings as his bullpen session and let him pitch against the Braves on Sunday.

Apparently that is being considered, but he would still only be able to start twice in the remaining 11 games.

Obviously they are all competitors. Definitely not to the same degree. Some play through injury or pain, while others beg out for less serious reasons. Sports history is full of examples.

Bauer’s nine starts have come against Detroit (2), Milwaukee (2), Pittsburgh (2), the Cubs (2), and Kansas City. Not the best bunch of lineups. And what about deGrom pitching four straight times against the Marlins?

Good point. Ideally those things would factor into voting, but it wasn’t that long ago that W-L record was a major consideration. I doubt most voters would consider that. They can’t control who they pitch against.
