NL Roster Moves: Marlins, Rogers, Reds, Santillan, Phillies, Haseley, De Los Santos

By TC Zencka | June 12, 2021 at 1:42pm CDT

Marlins’ breakout starter Trevor Rogers has been placed on the injured list without an injury designation, per Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald (via Twitter). It’s safe to assume the move relates to COVID-19 in some form or fashion, though speculatively speaking, it could be that Rogers is dealing with side effects from the vaccine. McPherson notes that the injured list stint is not expected to be long. That’s obviously welcome news for the Marlins, given Rogers performance in 13 starts this season. The 23-year-old rookie has logged 75 2/3 stellar innings with a 2.02 ERA/2.56 FIP.

In the meantime, Preston Guilmet had his contract selected, and he has been added to the active roster. The 33-year-old has not appeared in the Majors since 2018. He owns a 9.27 career ERA in 33 innings dating back to his 2013 debut with the Indians. Guilmet has also seen game action with the Orioles, Rays, Brewers, Cardinals, and Blue Jays. Elsewhere in the National League…

  • The Reds have recalled reliever Tony Santillan from Triple-A Louisville this morning, per the team. Santillan, 24, will make his Major League debut if he gets in a game. Fangraphs ranked him as the Reds’ 14th-ranked prospect at the start of this season, while Baseball America has him as high as ninth, noting some late-game potential for Santillan down the line.
  • The Phillies recalled Enyel De Los Santos from Triple-A, optioning catcher Rafael Marcan to Triple-A Lehigh Valley, per the team. Outfielder Adam Haseley was also reinstated from the restricted list and optioned to Triple-A.

Santillan is a starter, has been his entire minor and now major league career.

Santillan is listed as the Reds starter on Sunday so that’ll be his major league debut unless plans change.

why does it seem like the Marlins tend to lack depth in the minors? it seems when teams promote fill-ins usually they are a bit more successful than the guys the Marlins promote. i mean, they cant do better than the likes of Preston Guilmet, Luis Marte, and Shawn Morimando?

That’s why they are in a rebuild. Organizational depth is critical. It’s difficult to consistently contend without it. Kim Ng’s first trade deadline as a GM will be interesting. A step back in 2021 is probably needed if they want to win in the future. Aguilar, Duval, Cooper, Rojas, Alfaro, Floro, Garcia, and Anderson if he gets healthy. Some decent trade chips there and they’ll still have a pitching nucleus to build around.

Yeah, why can’t they promote Sixto Sanchez, Elieser Hernandez, Edward Cabrera, Jordan Holloway, Cody Poteet, Nick Neidert, Daniel Castano, or Jorge Guzman? If only there was a clear reason, hmm…

Promoting all those players leaves the farm system empty. The front office continues to add stop gap talent like Marte, Aguilar, Duvall in order to allow depth in the farm system. Contending window is still far far away

        Thank you @OofAndYikes

It seems when people make comments, their main goal is to show that they know nothing about what they’re talking about.

This thread discussion is sad considering that the Marlins have brought in so many of their kids who weren’t on the IL like others were, but went to the IL right after.

fwiw, its not a knock on the team in general. there’s a lot of talent on the club, its just when they promote a rando vs when another team promotes one, it seems the guy the Marlins promotes is more obscure.

          @DarkSide830

Yes, we’re promoting the obscure guys now because we’re running out of guys in some areas (like our pitching). @OofAndYikes pointed out all of the guys we’ve already brought up that shortly went on the IL afterward, and the other guys that were already on the IL. We’ve had a lot of injuries, especially among our organizational pitching. Bringing in the obscure pitching guys now isn’t about a lack of depth because we clearly have that. It’s just that we’ve had so many injuries with pitchers that our depth is on the IL and we no longer have healthy depth with our pitching. Us Marlins fans just don’t complain about the injuries or use our amount of injuries as excuses the same way we all have seen from the Mets fans.

Sure the Phillies called up De Los Santos. Now if they can just remember to include him on the lineup card….

Santillan is a starter, not a reliever, and he is already scheduled to start Sunday’s game.

He is a starter now, but when everyone gets healthy that might change. It’s not like the bullpen couldn’t use some help.

And next year, are you going to put Greene and Lodolo in the bullpen in order to keep Santillan and Vlad in the rotation?

So now it’s Rogers turn to be on the IL. What a wacky year…and not in a good way.

Santillian pitched pretty well today. would have liked to have seen him slam the door on the fifth to qualify for the win, but considering it was his debut, all in all it wasn’t bad. Reds get the W…
