Dodgers Place Tony Gonsolin On 10-Day Injured List

By Mark Polishuk | July 31, 2021 at 5:52pm CDT

The Dodgers have placed right-hander Tony Gonsolin on the 10-day injured list due to right shoulder inflammation, and also sent right-hander Brusdar Graterol and outfielder Luke Raley to Triple-A.  The trio of moves clears the way for Max Scherzer to be activated onto the Dodgers’ roster, while righty Edwin Uceta and southpaw Garrett Cleavinger were called up from Triple-A.

It seems likely that Gonsolin’s shoulder issue contributed to his tough start last night, as he lasted only 1 2/3 innings while allowing two runs on a hit and five walks in the Dodgers’ 6-5 loss to the Diamondbacks.  Control has been an uncharacteristically major issue for Gonsolin this season, as his 16.5% walk rate is one of the worst of any pitcher with at least 30 innings tossed.

Since Gonsolin didn’t debut this season until June 9 due to shoulder inflammation, the Dodgers have been limiting his workload, but the right-hander has still been posting some quality results.  Gonsolin has a 2.78 ERA despite his problem with free passes, as he has an above-average 26.6% strikeout rate and done a good job at limiting hard contact.

Gonsolin joins Clayton Kershaw and the newly-acquired Danny Duffy on the injured list, as Scherzer’s acquisition was intended to help correct the lack of available rotation depth.  If everyone is healthy, Los Angeles will have a fearsome array of pitchers available for the playoffs, though even the Dodgers’ depth has been tested by multiple pitching injuries this season.

Brusdar Graterol is a name that seems like it is a word scramble of his actual name. Maybe his name is actually Darrbus Logarter or Badger Loartrrus

He needs glasses is what he needs! Maybe borrow Joe Kelly’s glasses when batting.

Bellinger needs to take a different approach to the plate. His huge upper cut lends itself to a lot of swing and miss. He is strong enough to hit line drives to all parts of the ballpark but his long upper cut means he has to start his swing earlier. Teams are pitching him up in the zone which is tough to hit with his swing.

I guess since he’s going on the IL he’s listed as Tony Gone-Solin
When he comes back he will be Tony In-Solin?

    Kershaw renewed soreness as well

Theme of this year for LAD; 1 step forward 2 steps back

I feel there might be an off-field issue w Brusdar/LAD at this point.
There’s something we don’t know going on underneath all this between the 2 parties

We know he showed up to spring training out of shape, which is why he was unavailable for the first several weeks of the season. So whether you call that an on-field or off-field issue, it’s an issue.

Yea Blue I believe that prolly ties in but I think there’s another part of the story we aren’t fully getting

@5TUN- I don’t believe this is a performance based decision.
He should be in LA not OKC if this is based solely on performance/ability; somethings off

Being that Bellinger has 3+ yrs of service time, i think he has 1+ yrs of options remaining. And they don’t typically option players making $15M+

What is up with Bellinger. Don’t see much of Dodgers, just glanced at his .156 BA. Been hurt?

Been living in a cave hd? He had a shoulder separation that required surgery. When he recovered from that, he broke his leg on a play at first. Never really had a spring training. However, his return has been brutal.

Nope, not in a cave, living in the real world . Just don’t follow Dodgers, wasn’t soliciting a snarky response either.

Mate the man smokes so much weed. There awhile back was a video of JTurner randomly FaceTiming dodgers and when he did Bellinger he was so high it wasn’t funny. Prolly has smoke stains in his eyes and can’t see the ball.

Bellinger is probably lost and depressed because his girlfriend will get half of his next big payday, what with a kid on the way and all. Not being misogynistic, not being anti kid, not being anti Bellinger’s girlfriend. Just stating facts, for a while (many centuries ago) it seemed like the former MVP would be getting a Harper or Mookie contract, and now we all know it won’t be a fraction of that. Unless the Angels or Yankees overspend for an overrated slugger, as is typical these days.

Bellinger has gone from possibly earning 30 mil a year to a reclamation project. How things change. He should have requested an extension after that MVP season. He’s young and will probably turn it around and have a nice career. But a Richie Sexton type of career, not a Tori Hunter type of career. Still useful just not MVP type useful. The whole between his ears is the problem.
