Veteran reliever Danny Coulombe has cleared waivers and been released by the Red Sox, according to his MLB.com transaction tracker. The left-hander was designated for assignment last weekend. Coulombe had enough service time to reject an outright assignment. Boston went ahead and cut him.
Coulombe was bumped off the 40-man at the precipice of a bonus. His contract included incentives for appearances and time on the roster, including a $75K payday when he reached 30 games. His final outing with the club, which consisted of two scoreless frames against the Mets, was his 29th appearance.
The incentive-laden deal was the result of red flags during Coulombe’s medical review. He was initially set to sign a $2.25MM agreement with $750K in appearance-based bonuses. Instead, the sides agreed to an adjusted contract with a $1MM guarantee and $1.25MM in bonuses for days spent on the roster, along with the appearance incentives.
The 36-year-old Coulombe posted a 4.50 ERA in 22 innings with the Red Sox. A 6.34 SIERA suggests he was a bit lucky to have that mark. Coulombe’s strikeout rate tumbled to 10.4%. He had more walks (15) than strikeouts (10). It’s a significant step back from Coulombe’s recent work. He came into the year riding a streak of four straight seasons with a sub-3.00 ERA.
Coulombe was part of Minnesota’s mass bullpen selloff at last year’s trade deadline. He delivered a pristine 1.16 ERA through 40 games with the Twins, but struggled after getting dealt to the Rangers. Coulombe could quickly find his way onto another big-league roster.

He’ll go to the Rays and get fixed like so many former Red Sox pitchers.
For instance Booser has a 1.50 ERA and 0.722 WHIP and 35 K%.
Cam booser was traded to Chicago after pitching a year (43 appearances) of 3.32 era ball with a bad red sox defense behind him, and, had made his major league debut that season shortly before his 32nd birthday.
Do you know Booser’s FIP this year in TB? 3.38…
I think boston got as much out of him as is supposed to be expected, and, hes due regression. FIP doesnt feel TB unlocked anything boston didnt get.
The decision was made to give his roster spot to someone else, and, pick up a much younger prospect arm in the exchange.
Then again, If he was 32 in ’24, that means hes 34 this year…
So a 3.32 ERA equates to a 3.38 FIP now? The FIP to FIP argument might have been fairer here, only showing a .48 difference, and FIP should largely correct for differences in fielding (hence “Fielding Independent Pitching”). But xFIP and xERA have shown over a run of improvement comparing the 2 years.
FIP, while a decent predictor of future performance, doesn’t give a pitcher much credit for contact quality which they have some control over and is important to their profile.
NYY – no, youre fair in that regard. But then again, most pitchers improve from their first career year to their latter ones naturally, sometomes sophomore slump or a new org asking for tweaks that need unwinding, sometimes not….
The point is more on the line that there doesn’t appear to be some great unlocking of talent at another organization as soon as a player was jettisonned by boston. More so because CWS had their way with him in the middle perhaps.
Xera is bad be ause it doesnt adjust for ballpark differences, which are drastic ranging from park dimensions to turf or dome or anything else
I consider Fever a good friend in the ethereal realms of the internet… but, he has a habit recently of taking any former red sox pitcher who posts decent numbers and using it as a criticism of why the sox didnt do it while he was here. And although valid for some comps, I disagree in the case of Booser.
Thats all.
Ran out of time on my edit regarding xfip… xfip does the opposite of what you argue for about the pitcher having control over contact type… FIP uses a players actual HR totals against him. XFIP replaces the actual home runs allowed with a neutral league average, and, in that regard is (imo) less valuable… the hr was gling to be a hr regardless of who was in the IF or OF behind him on that given day, and, doesnt need correction the same swap balls in the park would be impacted by the defense. Park neutralizing factor already wouldve adjusted for short porches
That explains why Coulombe lingered so long on the market.
Michael Kopech remains a mystery
Go, hapless Phils!
He can’t possibly do worse than Alvarado and Banks.
What in the world is fip? I don’t really care actually all these stats nowadays make me laugh
Another analytic, Gen-Z stat that is probably junk like WAR.
I think it’s all junk. I love how some writers rank the greatest players and rank them by war as if that’s supposed to mean anything. It’s lazy writing and lazy ranking to be honest.
Willingly making yourself stupider just to virtue signal on the internet. Pretty pathetic stuff man
Ok random internet stranger that’s my opinion lmao take it or leave it I don’t care
I’m not even waiting for a response. The mute button was built with you in mind
FiP had been around quite a while. It takes a pitchers performances and neutralized the effects that the defense, or that the particular ballpark, provided to in theory describe how each pitcher wouldve performed compared to any other pitcher in a neutral situation.
So a guy who has an amazing defense behind him that sees a lot of low probability balls picked for outs, he probably sees a higher result on FIP than his actual era if they take away that advantage behind them- with is expressed as an expected era in that situation. Likewise, a team playing terrible defense, or, with a short porch stadium, it adjusts those outcomes where a ball otherwise wouldnt have left the park – such as pesky pole, Yankees RF, Rays RF, HOU left field, our becoming doubles off the monster, etc etc. That guy likely has a lower fip meaning he performs better than his era indicates, due to other factors in his location or teammates.
Its one way (by no means perfect as any attempt to compare anyone has built in biases or errors) of saying if every pitcher played with an equal defense and equal ballpark conditions, how would they have fared compared to the other pitchers, what was your expected result.
Basically it realized that pitchers get advantages or face disadvantages skewing the era result that arent just compensated for by errors.
I appreciate the effort but it’s wasted on me. I prefer to enjoy the game without that stuff.
I occasionally have similar conversations with GA on cars. I use to think mostly in terms of horse power, but GA is trying to explain to me why higher HP doesn’t necessarily mean you’re burning more rubber.
But I do enjoy learning new stuff. Especially the stuff that really challenges me.
Speaking of, getting any closer to finding a fun toy to play with Joe? Lower mileage examples of the more reliable, late model, toys are getting more scarce and expensive, quite sadly…
NFL question Joe but any idea if the bills are still interested in signing Brandin Cooks? He showed me plenty and I would be interested

Some of the formulas are new, but the underlying stats have been around forever. K/W has been important since I’ve been following BB. Ted Williams always preached about launch angle and pulling the ball in the air. And tendencies have been recorded in players own ledgers since pencils were invented.
The only thing that’s new is we have computers that can better track and disseminate these numbers.
Ah mocking what you don’t understand. That is so sweet and pathetic. Too lazy to spend one minute looking it up? I assume unless you can use AI to do the work for you, you just don’t have the smarts. Sad.
It’s sad your attempt to insult a random stranger online. I don’t like advanced stats plain and simple. I’m not too lazy to look I simply don’t care
Same goes for you. The internet is full of opinions. Problem is with this generation is everyone is a tough guy behind the screen. Mute city
You don’t think the Sox cut him to avoid a measly $75k? A game away? The Os should snatch him up with only one LHR in their pen
Suspecting there’s a good chance he ends up either on the “north side” or back in MN….
