Mariners Sign Jesus Colome

By Tim Dierkes | February 10, 2010 at 11:45am CDT

The Mariners signed righty Jesus Colome to a minor league deal, according to a team press release.  Colome, 32, posted a 7.59 ERA, 6.3 K/9, and 2.5 BB/9 in 21.3 innings for the Nationals and Brewers last year.  Additionally, he logged 17.3 strong innings in Triple A.

With a 94.7 mph average fastball, Colome is an intriguing risk-free pickup.  Poor control had been a major flaw until last year, when he posted an overall BB/9 of 2.33 in 38.6 innings.  The Mariners' other non-roster invitees can be viewed here.

When Colome was on the Nats he had 3 pitches: Home Run pitch, Walk-Off Home Run Pitch, and Ball in the dirt. But Jack Z signed him so this must be a turn around for Colome. Good Signing.

You’re joking with those last 2 sentences, right? You humorously describe an awful pitcher in your first sentence and then call it a good signing? You have your opinion of Colome…why should it change depending on which GM it is?

Because Jack Z is a magician. Honestly, like I really think that on his spare time, Jack practices pulling rabbits out of hats and stuff.

Sounds like hero worship. Jack Z has done a great job overall this offseason but it shouldn’t make him immune from objective criticism. Colome’s got a great arm, you can’t teach 95 mph, couple that with improved control (2.5 K/BB compared to 1.47 in his career) and some bad luck last year (.415 BABIP) and it’s definitely worth a minor league signing and a spring training invite. I like the signing as well…but dude, try to be a little more objective.

i dont know about good signing but heres how i viewed him when on the Nats: this guy was a headcase, he would either be VERY dominant like in ’05-’07 or be just plain TERRIBLE ’08-’09. The last 2 years he was with the Nats he would give people heart attacks when he pitched because we knew if we had a 3 run lead, we would be down by 3 by the time he left the mound. I agree with Span’s 3 pitches that he had, i might even add a 4th: Blind Pitch cause when he threw some of those balls he might as well of been throw them with his eyes closed because we have no idea where it was going. If the M’s can get him back to his OLD OLD form this would be a great sign if not he wont even make the team out of ST.

Did the M’s hire some of the Nats old scouts, personnel folks? The M’s now haveColume, Cordero, Shell, Speigner,Bard, Patterson, all who were with Nats in past 2 years. Seems to be a high percentage..

Did the M’s take one of the front office people of the Nats. Seem to be many ex-Nat org folks. From last 2 years they have Chad Cordero, Colume, Shell, Speigner, Bard, and Patterson. high proportion of their non roster invitees…

I like the Mariner’s approach to relievers. They sign guys with power arms and see who is gonna stick. It worked with Aardsma perhaps it will work with League and possibly some of their non roster invitees.
