Nationals Talk: Guzman, Dye, Hernandez

By Mike Axisa | February 8, 2010 at 6:40pm CDT

MLB.com's Bill Ladson spilled some hot stove goodness in his latest mailbag, so let's round it up with some good old fashioned bullet points…

  • Because he's owed $8MM in 2010, Ladson doesn't see Cristian Guzman getting traded before Opening Day. He'll get another chance to play shortstop because the team realizes his problems last year were due to injuries.
  • Unless he comes in as a fourth outfielder, it's unlikely the Nats will pursue Jermaine Dye.
  • The only way Ladson sees Livan Hernandez returning to the nation's capital is if they're unable to land a pitcher they really want first. If they do sign him, it would likely occur in Spring Training.

“Livan Hernandez returning to the nation’s capitol.”

Yeah, this is good news for Livan, 7 members of his immediate family, and the Philly lineup……………….. And terrible news for Nats fans. Enjoy all of the “Quality starts,” that just miss being “quality starts” by 2 runs and 2 innings each night, but he still “keeps the team in the game,” and other bad rationalizing “cliches,” as everything goes into “quotation marks.”

Livan is a mystery to other team’s fans. DC fans (at least I do) like Livan, I enjoy watching him play. He’s not an MVP anymore or anywhere near it, but he’s be a good veteran presence in the clubhouse for all of our young pitchers. I suppose Marquis could perform that role this year but I would not be opposed to Livan returning to the Nats. If he’s nearing the end of his career, I’d sure as hell like to see him do it in a Nats jersey.

sorry, i’m a nats fan and livo is a mistery to me, too.

too many nats fans are hung up on who he was in 2005/06 and not on who he is in 2010. some people seem to still think he’s an “innings eater” (which he’s really not any more). he’s just not a very good pitcher today and i really don’t see what he would add to the team that couldn’t be gotten elsewhere with better performance attached.
