Marlins Release Nate Robertson

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 27, 2010 at 4:04pm CDT

The Marlins released Nate Robertson, according to Joe Capozzi of the Palm Beach Post (Twitter link). Robertson struggled as a starter this season and the Marlins designated him for assignment last week. Today, the Marlins designated minor league right-hander Kris Harvey for assignment, according to Capozzi (Twitter link).

Robertson’s stats (5.47 ERA, 5.5 K/9 and 3.6BB/9) aren’t pretty and the outing against the Rockies that preceded his DFA was ugly (7 ER in 5.0 innings). However, his splits suggest he could be more effective out of the bullpen against lefties. The Tigers, Robertson’s former team, don’t appear to have interest. Any club can now sign Robertson for a pro-rated portion of the MLB minimum.

Detroit gave him a 3 year deal after the 2007 season, back when .500 pitchers were all getting $10 million a year.

Looking at his WHIP this year, it’s high, but there are quite a few guys with far worse WHIP this season. I would think at the major league minimum, someone offers Robertson a contract. Other than ERA, Robertson has better stats than Joe Saunders.

Giants could pick him up and use him against lefties and how funny would this be? Former starters Dontrelle Willis and Nate Robertson in the bullpen as left handed relievers!?

Well we will see what Tidrow does with Willis because he is a pitching guru, I suspect if the Giants aren’t able to fix him then he really is done…

dave ducan and dick tidrow are both respected pitcher fixers…in fact dontrelle personally requested to go to tidrow to help him fix his woes

I dont see him being a 20 game winner again, but to say its all over? I mean its been rough but there has to be someone that can fix him and make him valuable again in some sense…he has the talent and ability, the drive and the work ethic. he has to be a valuable bullpen arm again or 5th starter or something…and as a huge marlins fan i WISH he finds his way again

What are you really basing that on? You could be right, or wrong and I doubt that you really have the credentials to definitively say that. If he sorts his mechanics out a bit, he could be a useful lefty out of the pen. At least he has the drive to continue trying.

I think I’ve commented every time Dontrelle’s been released/dfa’d or whatever (besides the stay away from Dodger Stadium this year part) that he’ll probably get straightened out. At least I hope he does. Yeah, I know just because he’s a great guy that doesn’t mean he should have a spot on a team, but he’s one I really hope gets it back together.

The Rox beat him up good, but I’d love to see them pick him up as the bullpen arm they have been looking for instead of trying to trade for someone.

This was incredibly stupid. he was cheap as hell, and we have no lefty in the pen that could get outs. Robertsons numbers against lefties was good enough to at least get him the lefty job or long relief emergency situations. so now we’re stuck with Tankersley? he’s god awful. i just dont get it. he was effective in the bullpen twice for us, and once was against the Rays (like 5 innings after ricky got shelled) and thats a great hitting team…argh, this is just upsetting.

All of your comments about Willis being fixable is too funny. He’s done…. as a pitcher. Put him in the outfield and keep him in the national league and you have the possibility of a decent lefty slugger. I watched Willis struggle as a Tiger, and boy did he struggle, but man is that guy persistant. Make him an outfielder, whoever wants to try! He’ll be way better there than on the mound any day.

Oh and as a Tigers fan I watched Robertson. He won’t be happy coming out of the pen. He had a bad attitude in Detroit when he was coming out of the pen. But right now he should be happy with a job if he can find one.
