Pirates Acquire Sean Gallagher From Padres

By Luke Adams 2 | July 7, 2010 at 2:45pm CDT

The Pirates have acquired Sean Gallagher from San Diego for cash considerations, tweets Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

The Padres designated the right-hander for assignment nearly a week ago to make room on their roster for Tim Stauffer. There were at least a "handful" of teams interested in Gallagher, who had come to San Diego from the Athletics as the player to be named later in last year's Scott Hairston trade.

Gallagher has yet to make a real impact at the major league level, compiling a 5.57 ERA in 60 career appearances. However, he is still just 24 years old, is under team control through 2014, and was ranked as the 82nd-best prospect in baseball by Baseball America heading into the 2008 season.

The sequel to the disaster of Dana Eveland. Over or under 3 appearances for Gallagher before he is DFA’d?

I will boldly predict 5 appearances, then DFA’d.

Of course, he might stick around the rest of the season if Dotel and/or Carrasco are traded. On the other hand, I don’t know when Zach Duke is supposed to return, that could result in a Gallagher DFA.

He’ll fit right in with the Pirates – no one on that roster can pitch. Gallagher has slightly above average stuff, but he lacks command and doesn’t trust his stuff. His mechanics are also a mess. He sucks. Bringing him into a game is like pouring gas on the fire.

    ah yes — the Pirates.
the place where once mildly-promising prospects go to fade away.
just for you, oh, faithful patrons of Willie Stargell Stadium: please welcome … the next Craig Hansen!

hendry’s problems have never been about his ability to trade away marginal major leaguers!!!

and it’s not like the Cubs haven’t ‘developed’ plenty of marginal major leaguers for Hendry’s use

Daniel McCutchen was/will be sent down. There were a couple openings on the 40-man already.

I would say Brendan Donnelly on the 25 man (i hope) , on the 40 not sure.

Wait a minute… the Pirates made a trade involving a big league player and cash, and they actually ACQUIRED the player? This could be a big step for the organization. At least in theory.

Im guessing that the cash will help the padres get someone to trade for either a bat or a pitcher. I hope they can sign Adrian but they just can’t afford him

I heard the reason Gallagher was traded was because he smashed a watermelon with a sledgehammer in the clubhouse.
