Carlos Correa is believed to have suffered a significant left ankle injury, reports Brian McTaggart of MLB.com. He’ll visit a foot specialist tomorrow to narrow down a diagnosis and recovery timeline. McTaggart writes that he’ll be out indefinitely and could miss weeks or potentially months.
Correa was injured while taking batting practice before Tuesday’s game against the Dodgers. The Astros scratched him, moving Nick Allen from third base to shortstop while drawing utility infielder Braden Shewmake into the lineup at the hot corner. Shewmake wound up hitting a solo home run off Shohei Ohtani that proved the difference in a 2-1 Houston win.
It’s the second consecutive day in which the Astros lost a key player during pregame batting practice. Catcher Yainer Diaz strained his oblique while warming up on Monday and is also going to miss some time. He went on the injured list on Tuesday morning.
The Astros will presumably provide more information on Correa within the next few days. The three-time All-Star has battled injuries in both feet over the past few years. Plantar fasciitis and a muscle strain in his left foot hobbled him in 2023. He missed most of the second half of the ’24 season with plantar fasciitis in his right foot.
Injury concerns famously scuttled two of Correa’s agreements during his 2022-23 free agent trip: both a $350MM deal with the Giants and a subsequent $315MM agreement with the Mets. Those were both related to team medical personnel having concerns about Correa’s right ankle, not the one which he injured tonight.
That’s of little solace to a Houston team dealing with yet another significant injury. Correa becomes their fourth regular position player — alongside Diaz, Jeremy Peña and Jake Meyers — on the injured list. They’re also without starting pitchers Hunter Brown, Cristian Javier and Tatsuya Imai plus closer Josh Hader.
Peña, down since April 12 with a right hamstring strain, could start a minor league rehab assignment this week. Correa had been the regular shortstop in his absence. Allen, a light-hitting defensive specialist, will man the position in the interim. Losing Correa means the Astros will stick with Isaac Paredes as the everyday third baseman. Christian Walker is enjoying a resurgent season at first base, while Yordan Alvarez is mostly at designated hitter.
The infield depth, at least once Peña returns, is the only silver lining. Houston unsuccessfully tried to move Paredes or Walker over the offseason to alleviate the logjam, but they essentially haven’t been at full health for the entire season. Even before the hamstring injury, Peña had battled a fingertip fracture on his right hand that he suffered during the World Baseball Classic.
Houston reacquired Correa from the Twins last summer, taking on a little over $70MM on the remaining three years of his contract. He hit .290/.355/.430 over 51 games down the stretch and was out to a .279/.369/.418 start to this season. Although he’s not the power threat he was at his peak, Correa remains an above-average hitter and quality defender at either position on the left side of the infield when healthy.

an ankle injury? no way!
Just cheat and get a bionic leg.
Damn, Astros were getting ready to put together a run.
Correa is a great player, big loss.
Not sure what you’ve been watching, but I’m pretty sure the only run the #asstros were about to make was for last place in the AL West. Several regulars and most of their rotation on the IL.
The baseball gods never forget — even if Houston’s
cheating took place 8-9 years ago.
Paredes (.261/.361/.391) is a guy who hit 31HRs in ’23, he was out to a slow start but is heating up and is making good contact. Its only a matter of time before the homers start piling up.
They were starting to put it together at the top of the lineup. Alvarez is healthy and hitting. Walker is hitting.
Peter Lambert has pitched well. Spencer Arrighetti has pitched well. McCullers is as inconsistent as he has ever been but had a good start last week. Blubaugh has been racking K’s in the bullpen and looks like he is going to be a legit reliever for the Astros.
Correa was setting the table in the lead-off spot, hitting .279/.369/.418 — he is so important to that team, great leader, great teammate, great ball player.
Baseball Gods smile and love the Trashtros. That was a great team, one of the best teams ever. Grienke’s team. There is a team photo of that team where everybody dressed up like Grienke, its a classic.
Anyhow, sad about it, was just getting my hopes up for an Astros hot streak.
my memory fails me, 2017 was not Grienke’s team, Grienke 0-2 in World Series in 2019 and 2021 but Grienke’s teams had the same roots. The Grienke years were the best years.
It’s really been a dynasty from ’17 to ’25 and its still rolling with Correa and Altuve at the heart of it all.
Trashtros started it all, that was the year I started liking the Astros, have been an A’s / White Sox fan all my life but I thought that Trashtros stuff was so funny. I have rooted for the Astros ever since, still an A’s fan, like the Angels and Rangers too, only team I dont like in the AL West is Seattle.
Yea it’s absolutely hilarious when teams wreck the game by cheating, get outta here with that nonsense. I understand that we need to move on about it, it is what it is. But let’s not get poetic about it.
They didn’t “wreck the game by cheating.” Them taking the fall for the league kept that from happening. The words you are looking for are thank you.
Roses are red
Violets are blue
Trashtros Forever
They were nothing but true
You keep believing that
Do you trash the Red Sox for cheating to their 2018 title? How about the Yankees cheating in the 90s with steroids and 2009 with using smartphones to steal signs? Bet you don’t. Bet you also don’t realize that the 2017 Dodgers were doing the same thing. So were at least the Cubs, Rangers, Brewers, Yankees and most of the league. The thing is, Houston won in 2017 and beat three glamour teams along the way in Yankees, Red Sox and Dodgers. MLB made them the scapegoat and let everyone else get away with it—namely the 2018 Red Sox, who were able to put all the blame on the video replay guy who “never told anyone what he was doing”. If you dry that one out you can fertilize the grass at Fenway.
All those injury issues yet they are only 2 games behind your Mariners. If the baseball gods are at play here, what sin did your lot commit to keep you out of the World Series for your entire lifetime ?
Excellent!
Baseball gods did not forget Houston’s sacrifice, which is why the run was for such an extended period of time. If the run is over I can accept that because they will be back and I got to see really good baseball to 10 years. Not many organizations can say that (that actually has a budget).
Nice to hear from the ankle biters in SEA who have never won anything. Better to have been to the mountain top and fallen, rather than never been there. Keep pretending like you mean something up there in the wilderness.
A run off a cliff, maybe.
A run for the border and then a run in the pants after too many chalupa
I am sad to read this but he seems to be injury prone the past few years. This is not the Astros year.
I’m a twins fan and I was not upset when he was traded last year. They were going to cut payroll and be terrible so it was logical they started with him.
Twins are thrilled to be (mostly) out of that contract.
As are the Giants.
The Giants did pivot to Arson Judge though, he’s been raking.
Good one, this one definitely hasn’t been beat to death already
It’s a slow burn kind of joke
That Devers contract instead is really panning out well for the Giants! 😂😂😂
Correa was just like Donaldson. Made twins fans happy to have a well known possibly big performer finally on the team. We don’t get many FA splashes. But both are generally disliked, injury prone and shipped out early. At least Correa still plays well but I never liked him or enjoyed him in the Twins
It’s disappointing you couldn’t enjoy the most impactful Twins shortstop possibly ever
Roy Smalley is the best and most impactful Twins SS ever, not Correa.
Zoilo Versalles? MVP and WSC?
Very close between the two for me, but I’ll give Smalley the edge if only for the sentimental reason that I had his dad’s Topps Phillies card from 1957.
encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTXmL… (taken at Connie Mack Stadium)
Greg Gagne ate Smalley’s lunch
OK fine, best SS in the past 30 years.
Smalley is severely underrated, but he had about 10 seasons in a Twins uni. Correa was about half as valuable in only 3.5 seasons, so more impactful on average per season. Regardless, I can’t imagine not enjoying Correa’s performance in 2023 as a Twuns fan. That’s ludicrous
*Twins, whoops
Time to call the Brewers on Ortiz, they been looking to move him heck might as well add Megill, Sanchez and Rengifo in the trade too.
Haa. I came here to say I hope Ortiz is offered.
Why have the Brewers been looking to move Ortiz?
“Why”
In over 11oo PAs, Ortiz has a 77 OPS+. Great glove or not, that is just too low for the majors. Besides, they have future Hall Of Famer David Hamilton, waiting in the wings.
I am so tired
But but but… no quarter!
Definitely no quarter given…after a nice nap.
#sweepy
Cheaters always lose in the end.
And whiners continue to whine.
Whiners have more integrity than cheaters.
A ring snd multiple pennants along with millions in the bank is a weird loss.
I would give up so much for the Astros run of success. They won. And the entire league cheated too btw. You can find comments from multiple players or you know, the athletics initial report breaking the sign stealing scandal. But considering what fan base you’re from I don’t think facts matter too much
Maybe just me, but i look at some pictures on google and saw him on TV v Boston I think, and his ankles look skinny. Like noticeable below average skinny. Check it out and confirm or deny if you wish. Just an observation. Poor Carlos might have been dealt some less than optimal genes.
One toke over the line, sweet Jesus. One toke over the line….
Sittin downtown in a railway station…
With 2.8 years left on the deal he had to ‘settle’ for!? Where if he had been signed to those $350M-ish deals he’d have like 3.8 to like 7.8 years left on!?
*Shocking*
He was the most over hyped, over sold free agent in baseball history and the fact that someone kinda caved and gave him more than a half decade and a fifth of a billion is just so… dumb. It’s just dumb.
You need to get out more. Teams waste hundreds of millions of dollars on contracts all the time. Rendon? Strasburg? Kris Bryant? Chris Davis? He’s played more than any of those guys and when on the field he was far better. He might not be worth it the entire deal, but your sense of hyperbole has sucked all the oxygen away from any understanding of history at all.
Old mate has beef with Carlos. Might have bedded a wife mother or sister. Not sure. It’s the same post over and over again at every opportunity. I wouldn’t pay it much heed.
Sorry for Carlos injury. Hopefully not too serious. But the pick up from the Yanks. Saved them.
Shewmake a good point!🙃
It says “significant ankle injury”. It’s probably big, but I hope it doesn’t take surgery.
Yikes. This is not good at all. Correa has been a great player, he’s a clubhouse leader. I hope he recovers as quick as possible. Trying to stay optimistic, at least there won’t be an infield logjam when Pena comes back.
He was having a nice spring too.
OH NO … anyway…
At least they turned Peter Lambert into a good pitcher one thing went right this year.
Shucks
No, not sorry.
Too bad as he was just playing little kick the can in the cul de sac. Altuve still hiding under that park bench. Ally ally all come free!
The ankle-biter, Altuve ambushed Correa from under the bench.
Karma.
For what?
For taking Altuve shirt. He shy
