dodgers were looking at ross…maybe dodgers???
John
You’re kidding right? The dodgers stink and shouldn’t have even acquired dotel lilly and posednik. Why would they keep adding?
Gumby65
Because Pods & Manny are probably both gone end of this season, and Cody is team control for 2011. And why resist the urge to screw both SF & SD in one flail swoop?
Michael
one fell swoop
Dave_Gershman
$20 says theres a 100% chance it’s the Padres. It has to be. doesn’t it?
Something like Keyvius Sampson for Ross straight up could get it done…
GasLampGuru
Are you out of your flipping mind? Sampson has quickly become one of their top pitching prospects and you want to give him away for Cody Ross – a guy who has been waived? No thanks.
It won’t be Sampson, it won’t be Simon Castro, and it won’t be Cory Leubke. It will be mid level prospects at best.
daveineg
I’m thinking it’s the Cardinals. The loss of Ludwick is hurting them.
chaifetz10
Seriously? Have you not been following Jon Jay?
J
Ludwick leaving has hurt them. They could be playing both of them their. They have a 3 man offense right now.
Safety Harbor Resident
Ross would be an asset to St. Louis as soon as the four man outfield becomes an MLB staple. Like Chaifetz noted, Jon Jay has been raking. Ludwick leaving has only hurt b.c. Freese is now out for the season and Rasmus has been hobbled. Cody Ross adds nothing to the offense, because he plays OF where he is not an improvement over Jay and certainly not Rasmus once he returns. The Cardinals need more offense out of the hot-corner, Cody Ross can’t provide that.
erm016
I think someone would claim him first before the Padres could. They’d have last available pick since they have the best record.
Dave_Gershman
The Cardinals would have to be the only team but I don’t they would be willing to meet the Marlins trade demands for Ross. Unless a team claimed him for next season…
Brian Culpin
Teams put claims in without having any intentions of working out a deal all the time. It is risky, but it happens. If they put a claim in, they would be blocking the Padres from getting him.
Dave_Gershman
Well that’s obviously the idea, but in this case, stark said they were working out a deal.
Ferrariman
explain to me why the cardinals would be a team interested in Ross…
i’m liking the outfield right now of Holliday, Rasmus, Jay/Craig. works pretty good so far…
Dave_Gershman
I’m not saying they would trade for him, but they have pretty much the worst record among good NL teams…so just to block the other teams from getting to him.
J
Craig isn’t hitting & Rasmus is still hurt.
Bill Harshbarger
Sure isn’t the Giants, that would be a move that would make sense
alvin
Or perhaps it’d be so nonsensical that it WOULD be the Giants?
alvin
Wait, you think this move made sense? I misread that.
JST1331
Why would the Phillies get Brad Hawpe and why would they get Ross makes no sense. If they get Hawpe Ruben Amaro Jr. should be fired.
redsandyanksfan
I wonder if it could be the reds? i know they have a lot of outfielders but Gomes is worn out and stubbs is streaky and in a slump yes hes coming out of it but just wondering it wont be them though , it was worth a thought
erm016
Seems reasonable.
redsandyanksfan
Thank you.i wouldnt mind seeing him in a reds jersey
penpaper
Isn’t Ross a non tender candidate? I’m sure the Marlins will trade him for whatever they can get.
johnsilver
Luria has made some cheap moves for payroll, but he is not that stupid. He will move him 1st and get a decent prospect back to boot. Ross can play 3 OF positions, corner fairly well and CF decent. Put him in a more offensive friendly park and his power numbers would probably explode, like Philly.
force5143
He is much better in centerfield than “decent”
RiverKKiller999
It’s the Giants.
dodgerskingsfan
dont believe rosenthal… could be dodgers.
FishFan03
got my money its the Giants
Dave_Gershman
Well now that we know it’s the Giants, it’s obvious that you do have money. Well done.
FishFan03
lmao ok
TheReturnOfMrBlanks
I Hope it’s not the Padres, He’s only batting .261 which is just a tad higher then Venable an Hairston who both have as many homers as he does (10), Also Cody Has 100 K’s already..Padres don’t need that in their Line up an it just wouldn’t make much sense… Last but not least He hasn’t Hit a Home run since the series at Petco..which was awhile ago
GasLampGuru
If they brought in Ross, it would be to play CF. He would be an upgrade defensively over Denorfia, and their offense is comparable. Denorfia will cost them runs with his limited range in the playoffs.
ludafish
im not saying he is this offensive force, but his numbers are usually pretty good for a 6 hitter. i dont know what happened to him and maybe the change of scenery can bring him back up to par. he is know for ripping it up in bits and pieces, so if a contender can get that from him for 2 more weeks of the whole season it would be worth it….cause he can carry a team when he gets hot. only issue is he gets hot twice a year and will he ever do it again? i say the marlins out him, this year is way over and next year might also be a question mark. get the rookies playing time and build for 2012
TheReturnOfMrBlanks
Giants? What are they trying to do acquire a new Outfielder ever week?
Guest
We’re about to find out what minor league pitcher the Giants will have to give the Marlins in addition to Nate Schierholtz to get this done.
Dave_Gershman
Seriously?
alvin
What’s really funny is that a deal couldn’t be worked out, so the Marlins basically just said, “Actually, you can just have Ross. Here’s the remainder of his salary as well.”
Dave_Gershman
The Marlins have always like Clayton Tanner and Dan Runzler. Maybe they can get one or both for Ross and Cash.
55saveslives
Tanner AND Runzler?? Cody Ross is marginal at best.
Dave_Gershman
I said either of both for ross and cash. Neither are exactly the best things since sliced bread.
ninersquad
you said one or both for Ross.
ninersquad
you said one or both for Ross.
55saveslives
If the Giants claimed him I’d assume its to block…
friscofan101
i highly doubt a trade will be made. giants just didn’t want any of the other teams there fighting against to get any stronger.
frank_costanza
do the Giants really have room for another outfielder? There offense is pretty good right now, their pitching has been the problem. The additions of Pat the Bat, Jose Guillen, Freddy Sanchez, Buster Posey, Aubry Huff, and now the emergence of Andres Torres, all of those moves are just minor moves on their own, but with all of them together, there are few easy outs in that line up.
55saveslives
If only Rowand could get “lost” on his way to the ballpark!
John
i agree. …funny thing though, my son’s, he’s 9, favorite Giant is Rowand. Always asks me, “Is Rowand starting today?” “…Bochy sucks.” Kinda hard to explain to him why Rowand hurts more than he helps.
Guest
The most plausible explanation is that they did it to block others from getting him. Although it should be noted that he hits above his career averages against the Padres, Cardinals, and Braves.
fishfan4life
Please trade him.
coolstorybro222
thank god the phillies didn’t get him.
Taskmaster75
It’s going to suck when Jon Jay regresses to his actual numbers. No way he sustains a .406 BABIP.
greengrove
The Giants just want every average outfielder in the league.
Mike G
Typical Brian Sabean move, in that it makes no sense at all.
IIMadzII
Disappointing move as a Fish fan. Letting a fan favorite walk away and getting nothing in return all to bring up the king of triple A, Maybin. Hopefully this kid is actually productive this time around.
Brenden
I hear ya. What a dissapointment. The fish have been an on the bubble team now for a while now and to see a guy who is young and a fan favorite walk away and get nothing in return, thats not right. The marlins with this move are now heading in the wrong direction, no matter how well maybin does.
fishfan4life
I’m sure Loria is just happy to get rid of his contract (albeit not a big one) considering they got no one in return.
Brenden
dude prospects won’t cost the marlins much.
fishfan4life
Something is better than nothing.
TeamCropDusters
Looking like Schieholtz days in SF are all but over. He is out of options, and I don’t see another team not claiming him.
They could also DFA Rowand. But that is unlikely.
myname_989
I’m kind of surprised the Marlins just awarded him to the Giants. Looks like the Giants put in a claim to block, and got shafted by the Marlins. Now they’ll have to move someone off their active roster for Ross. He’s a good pickup, but you’re gonna lose someone, probably Schierholtz. They should really just bite the bullet and designate Aaron Rowand for assignment.
Guest
Can someone explain to me why Ross was awarded to the Giants?
Andy
the giants did not want to trade for him.
So the marlins could keep Ross, or just dump him on the Giants.
They did the 2nd
mgsports
Thye just put Nate or Aaron Waviers.
TheReturnOfMrBlanks
Haha Giants… way to go! an 6 Games back 😉
giantsfan4life
Please tell me they’re going to DFA Rowand now, I’m tired of watching him either strike out or hit weak GB’s to third or short.
brenth
Sabean’s job is on the line, he’s panicking as the Giants are slipping. You heard it here first, if the Giants don’t make the playoffs, Sabean is gone. It’s win-win.
SalvadorM
6 games back and counting, minus 1MM and no playoffs this year, good claim ha ha ha.
Frank Robinson
2 back in the WC.
