Braves Outright David Fletcher

By Steve Adams | April 25, 2024 at 6:09pm CDT

6:09pm: Justin Toscano of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports (on X) that Fletcher’s deal contains an advance consent form that allows Atlanta to send him to the minors. Even though he has surpassed the five-year service threshold, he would forfeit what remains of his salary if he elects free agency. He’ll therefore report to Gwinnett and try to play his way back to the majors.

1:50pm: The Braves announced Thursday that veteran infielder David Fletcher went unclaimed on waivers and has been assigned outright to Triple-A. Fletcher entered the season with 4.168 years of service time, meaning he needed only four days to reach the five-year mark. He accomplished that during his eight-day stretch on the 40-man roster, meaning he now has the five years of service needed to reject an outright assignment and retain his salary. He’s being paid a guaranteed $6MM this season and is still owed $6.5MM in 2025 and at least a $1.5MM buyout on a 2026 club option.

Fletcher, 29, appeared in five games with the Braves and tallied nine plate appearances, going 2-for-8 with a pair of singles. His subtraction from the 40-man roster likely signals the looming return of second baseman Ozzie Albies, who’s been on the injured list with a fractured toe but is expected to return to the active roster for this weekend’s series.

Fletcher came to the Braves amid a series of convoluted offseason trades that saw them effectively purchase Jarred Kelenic from the Mariners. Atlanta took on the underwater contracts of both Evan White and Marco Gonzales to get Kelenic, sending back righty Jackson Kowar (on whom they’d taken a flier in a trade with the Royals) and former second-round pick Cole Phillips, who’s yet to pitch since being drafted due to injury. Gonzales was traded to the Pirates, with the Braves absorbing three quarters of his $12MM salary. White was traded to the Halos for Fletcher and Max Stassi (on an underwater contract himself) in another financially-motivated swap; Stassi was then quickly flipped to the White Sox for a player to be named later. Atlanta covered all but the league minimum on Stassi’s remaining salary (a net of about $6.26MM for the Braves).

After all that, it’s possible Fletcher will now simply move on. The Braves initially appeared set to use the versatile, defensive-minded veteran as their primary utility infielder. However, Atlanta wound up instead signing Luis Guillorme to fill that role later in the offseason. Guillorme will now slide back into a bench role after filling in for Albies at second base, leaving Fletcher without a clear path to playing time. If he does reject the assignment, other teams in need of infield help could take a look at Fletcher and would only owe him the prorated league minimum for any time spent on the roster. That sum would be subtracted from what the Braves owe him.

Fletcher signed a five-year, $26MM extension with the Angels on the heels of a .298/.356/.395 showing from 2019-20 — a productive stretch at the plate during which he fanned at a tiny 10.1% clip and played superb defense between three infield spots (second base, third base, shortstop). He’s since floundered at the dish, however, batting just .259/.295/.326 in 999 plate appearances. Fletcher’s bat-to-ball skills have actually improved (8.6% strikeout rate), but his quality of contact has plummeted and rendered him an unimpactful player in the batter’s box.

Is this the same David Fletcher who introduced Ohtani’s interpreter to a bookie at a poker game in LA?

Can’t blame him if there was not any “visible” signs. Would take a flyer on him for cheapskate John Henry’s club.

We’ll never know, but I’d like to know what other ballplayers were there. How many other high roller illegal poker games, underground casinos across the country players must get invited to. There’s gotta be more than a few players or those close to players who are the Mickelson of baseball.

My recollection is that Fletcher hosts a poker tournament as a fundraiser for a favorite charity every offseason.

“Fletcher clarified this week that he was not the one who introduced Bowyer and Mizuhara, although the infielder did provide answers on how Bowyer gained access to the poker game, which took place at the team hotel in San Diego. The Atlanta infielder said an acquaintance of his helped Bowyer gain access to the poker game”

So essentially the word was on the street the Angels had high stakes poker games going on in their road trip and some of them were known for being bad bettors and ripe for a big score.

The Post reported last year that Maverick Carter, LeBron James’s longtime business manager, also admitted to placing bets on the NBA with the same illegal operation. Carter was not a target of the probe and was not charged.

        Well he got off lucky.

You cannot evaluate someone on 8 at bats. This was always a salary dump because the Braves are under the tax threshold.

This is not a salary dump, the lesser Fletcher will go to minors and the Atlanta ball club will be obligated to give him all of his money so long as he reports and stays with Atlanta’s minor league ball club.

I thought he had service time to get paid regardless, which is why another club would only be responsible for the minimum.

The service time is negated by the signed advance consent form where he would forfeit what remains of his salary if he elects free agency — this feels like a scene involving a vice from Scorcese’s Casino.

Dont understand how Guillorme still gets chances when he can’t hit at all. David Fletcher is a very underated hitter. Guys like Guillorme and Nicky Lopez are a couple tiers below fletcher. I’d probably say Fletcher is about as good as IKF, maybe even a bit better. I’d take Fletcher over Zack Short any day of the week

Well Zach Short is being paid league minimum and Fletcher is being paid 6 million dollars. That would cost the Mets over 12 million for a backup player on the already league high payroll.

Nicky Lopez is a great fielder. He’s pretty good to have if you have a good offense. I agree about Guillorme. Anthopolous said they have trouble attracting bench pieces because they can offer no guaranteed playing time and it’s well known their infielders seek to play everyday, an ambition that started presumably with Markakis’s stint in ATL and his effect on Freeman and Swanson and afterwords their effect on these guys. Markakis was playing everyday while chronically arthritic practically. To those who claim veterans can’t have much of a lasting influence on a team

@Travis’ Wood honestly, you don’t have a clue. Fletcher when hes on a hot streak is an automatic hit every time. Problem is teams aren’t giving him consistent playing time. Give him a full season and he can hit .300. Not every guy needs to smack 20 Hrs. He can hit .300 with 6hrs with above average defense. Most of these role player hit around .220 with around 10 to 13 hrs if they are lucky. I’ll take Fletcher all day, he can hit and thats valuable

The problem with Fletcher is when he hits that HR. Then he starts trying to elevate the ball and will get those other 5 HRs while going 5 for 50

Don’t understand this move. Would have rather kept Fletcher since you are going to be paying his Salary if another team picks him up (White Sox..probably). Guillorme does not hit, has those Pablo Sandoval Abs (before he lost the weight), not a speedster. Just don’t understand why they would keep Guillorme over Fletcher. They would have been better off just keeping Nicky Lopez. The only way AA can make out on all of these head scratching, salary absorbing moves is for Jared Kelenic to win the MVP 5 years in a row…which is not happening!
Ozzie Albies surely healed quickly from a fractured Big (Great) toe. He broke his foot last year (I think) and all of his Toe/feet related injuries have occurred in or around the batters box!

Figured this one out. Darren O’Day is in the Braves Radio Booth on occasions. Guillorme was 2-2 with 2 HRs against O’Day and the Braves in 2022. O’Day made this call.

Fletcher is owed a lot more money and into next season also; this is the second time Atlanta has done this they were hoping either another team would claim him and owe him the money or maybe Fletcher would refuse and loose the money. It was a business move now he is still in the organization if needed.

I like his approach at the plate. I say lead off because he is a master at slapping balls to right that are out of the strike zone to get on base, especially high pitches. I think he could do either if given regular playing time.
