White Sox Hope To Retain Garcia

By Zachary Links | September 5, 2010 at 3:48pm CDT

White Sox GM Ken Williams says that he hopes to re-sign Freddy Garcia after his contract runs out this season, according to Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times.  There was some speculation that there might not be room in the rotation for the veteran righthander.

Earlier this month, Garcia told Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune that a proverbial game of musical chairs could leave him without a place to sit.

"Look around," said Garcia. "Now they got (Edwin) Jackson, another pitcher with a lot of money. So they want to get (Jake) Peavy back next year, who knows? They got (John) Danks, (Mark) Buehrle and (Gavin) Floyd. I don't know what the situation is for me."

Having six starters in the mix would give the White Sox some much needed insurance as Peavy might not be healthy by Opening Day.  Rookie Chris Sale is also likely to being the season in the minors to convert back into a starting pitcher.

In 25 starts this season, Garcia has turned in a 4.82 ERA with 5.3 K/9 and 2.7 BB/9.  His 142 major league innings so for in 2010 eclipse his combined IP from 2007-2009.

I think Garcia is a nice depth option for them. It’s possible that Peavy won’t be ready when the season opens, and since he’s under contract for several years, it seems that it would be smart to give him all of the time he needs to return. You could do worse for a fifth or sixth starter than Garcia, and since the Sox have traded most of their near ready minor league arms, it would be a wise move IMO.

Peavy/Jackson/Floyd/Buerhle/Danks is a pretty sick rotation. Of course you can never have too much pitching, someones always going to miss some time.

Peavy’s injury is an unknown. I agree that rotation is great, but like you said, you can never have enough pitching, especially with Peavy’s injury.

No one has any real idea that Peavy will be able to pitch well or even be back by next year. As I like to point out in other comments about Peavy, no one has ever had a detatched Lat muscle in baseball history. For all we know, it may be be impossible to rehab the injury. Signing Garcia would lock up a solid, if unspectacular, 5th starter and if Peavy does come back on time, a swingman or trade bait to a team with below average starters.

Totally agree. And having SIX starters for five spots is something any team that wants to contend really needs. There’s always injuries, illness, family emergencies, and suckitude that has to be covered anyway.

Seems like a great fit for the Sox in 2011. I, like many others, question whether Peavy will be a real contributor next year…or ever for that matter. I sure hope he is but I havent read anywhere that hes likely to ever be the same again. Its not like TJ surgery.

As with every deal however, it will depend on how much Freddy will want and for how long. If hes reasonable and doesnt want a 3 year deal, he would be perfect and the Sox would be able to wave good bye to Pena.

You guys are forgetting about the almighty $$$. One of the top 5 (not Freddie) has to go, because $50Mil is more than the Sox will put in the rotation. Plus, Freddie cannot warm up fast enough to do relief. Look for him in the rotation at about $2 Mil, and for one of the others to be traded.
