The Dodgers have agreed to sign Ron Mahay, according to ESPN.com's Jayson Stark (on Twitter). The left-hander gives manager Don Mattingly another option out of the 'pen, along with southpaws Hong-Chih Kuo and Scott Elbert.
Mahay posted a 3.44 ERA with 6.6 K/9 and 2.1 BB/9 in 34 innings for the Twins last year. The 39-year-old has always fared better against left-handed hitters, including in 2010, when he held them to a .219/.239/.281 line and posted 6.2 K/9 and 1.0 BB/9 against them.
Good move if the price is right
Good move period.
There goes the last lefty reliever off the market that was possibly even worth a look.
now lets see if he can win the job
Finally a lefty. Do we have room on the 40man?
no, someone gets bumped
Hector Gimenez, Lindsey, Hoffmann…one of those? Cant see Javy G, Schlit, Luis Vasquez, Mitchell or Xavier getting bumped before them.
Xavier Paul’s days have to be numbered. I suspect he’ll be traded soon. Thames, Gibbons, Gwynn all probably have a better chance of making the roster, and Paul is out of options.
Looks like Jamie Hoffmann might be out of options also.
He has two options left.
Thanks… where are you find option info?
It’s just from memory. He was added to the 40-man prior to the 2009 season, optioned out in Spring Training, then outrighted off before 2010. The Yankees picked him in the Rule 5, but since they returned him before Spring Training ended, he never burned a second option year.
could be a nice signing since the dodgers needed a lefty coming out of the bullpen besides kuo. and he has pitched better against left handed hitters.
or elbert gets bumped
I got to see Elbert pitch in the Arizona Fall League this year and I must say he looked pretty good. Scouts there that I was sitting behind seemed impressed and said that he was clocked in the 92-95 range and that his slider looked very good. No chance he gets bumped.
I like it!
it’s a minor league deal. no one’s getting bumped for a while
Where do you see minor league deal? Not in this story or the linked twitter feed.
Take your pick…
Thanks, I did find that info right after I posted the question. I’d assumed that MLBTR would have had the latest dope on this signing. Seems they still don’t. I won’t ever assume that again.
