New York Notes: Posada, Cano, Mets

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | March 23, 2011 at 5:32pm CDT

The Yankees claimed a minor league pitcher today. Here's the rest of what you need to know about New York's two teams…

  • Jorge Posada told Kevin Kernan of the New York Post that he hopes to re-sign with the Yankees after the season, when he hits free agency. If the Yankees don’t want him back, he would consider playing elsewhere, even though he doesn’t want to sign with another team. "I would [leave], if it's the right situation," he said. "It's got to be the right situation."
  • As Daniel Barbarisi of the Wall Street Journal explains, Robinson Cano is helping young Yankees learn how to deal with the media, even though media relations haven't always been his forte.
  • Yahoo's Jeff Passan says that while Luis Castillo and Oliver Perez are gone, the Mets' problems are only beginning. "When the best thing about a team is the hamburger available at its stadium," Passan writes, "it’s bad."
  • Be sure to read Tim Dierkes' take on the Mets' offseason.

    Sabathia and Joba agree.

Well, those players aren’t on the team so that was a bit confusing…

Although, I guess I can’t think of any oversized players on the Mets(K-rod?)… come to think of it, I can’t think of any good players on the Mets either… (I kid. It’s going to be a long season, Met fans)

      not that he plays anymore…
or not that he ever played at CitiField…

unless he hits out of his mind this year, is there any way the yanks bring back posada? there will probably be a dozen better candidates for their DH position

Agree. I’ve said this to other Yankee fans I see no point in them re-signing him even if he has a decent year. Too many vets who can use a DH spot, then again there is also, if he is big league ready by the time, Jesus Montero, to use the DH haha

If he is determined to stay a Yankee and doesn’t care all that much about play time I’m sure they could keep him on the bench. Use him like they did with Thames this year maybe.

except he can’t play a position, so he’d kind of a waste a spot

i know what you’re saying, but but C 1B & DH are positions that do not need support in nyy

if thames could only do what posada can, he likely wouldn’t have been given a bench spot

If I were Cashman I wouldn’t bend over backawards to bring him back. It all depends on what he does this year, how Montero and Martin perform and where Romine is in his developement at the end of the year. I can see a .260/.360 25 hr year from Posada this year (not far from what he did in 2010 in less than 400 AB).

If…..Montero has the bat but the glove is not at least at a slightly below average form.

If…..Martin can stay healthy and prove to be above avg with the glove and decent with the bat.

Then I would say, let Posada walk, give the majority of the time to Montero at DH and Martin at C and perhaps let ROmine backup if he’s ready.

If Montero proves to be acceptable with the glove and an assett with the bat and Martin is deemed a failure and Posada has a good 2011 and is willing to come back on a a 1/$5-$7 mil deal then I might do it if I were the Yanks. How many DH’s can also be an emergency 3rd catcher as well?

Massive log jam in the DH department, I don’t see how Posada can get any ABs.

    – How about what do you consider the perfect timing to duck down from an AJ Burnett pie toss if you hit a walk off, that way he can pie Kim Jones each and every time.

Or if not, come up with a Top 10 Illness list on what’s wrong with you. We all know what Chan Ho Park’s number 1 was

“I had a lot uh diarrhea”

For those who haven’t seen it, go on YouTube and look up Chan Ho Park Diarrhea. NO it is not of him on the toilet, it is him in an interview. Best thing in the video is Mariano’s face in the background.

I love jorgie, but I hope the Yanks don’t resign him. I hope he retires with class and dignity, not a nasty divorce with the Yankees.

As Stuart said, signing to be with the bench wouldn’t be a bad move, but I don’t know if Jorge would accept that. I also hope they don’t resign him barring a remarkable year which i don’t see happening for him at the age of 39

Jorge makes sense on the bench. Emergency catcher and backup 1B/DH.

I hope for Posada’s sake it won’t be a nasty divorce. I think he already seems to understand that there might not be a place for him on the team next year.

Jeter had a bad year in a contract ending year, let’s not hope Jorge does the same.

Alternatively, if the Yankees are in a position of wanting Posada back it would mean Montero and Martin sucked, or A-Rod is out for 2012.

Or it could mean that Arod is still playing 3b and Montero is still a catcher. Not sure why ppl are ready to make Arod a full-time DH. As long as he isn’t horrible then we can get by with a -2 or -3 WAR as long as his bat makes up for it. Besides, not any better 3b on the FA market next year and I don’t think attempting to trade for one makes any sense either (not that I see a marquee one becoming available).

I think you meant UZR instead of WAR. He isn’t Adam Dunn bad to lose 3 wins from defense! Personally, I would rather Jeter DH than Arod from a defensive standpoint, assuming the yanks find a suitable replacement for SS. Although having Jeters small-power bat in the DH spot wouldn’t look too good.

I’m hoping that outcome as well. Yanks need to keep that DH spot open to rotate Jeter, A-Rod and occasionaly others to keep them fresh. Have Nunez play SS if Jeter is in the DH and put Chavez at the 3rd the days A-Rod is the DH.

I’m glad Passan pointed out how Mets fans have a lot of young talent on the field to look forward too and the fact that everyone (aside from Beltran) has seemed really healthy this ST. I’m also glad he mentioned how well Chris Young and Capuano have looked and that the Mets *could* have a fairly decent rotation and a pretty damn formidable line-up.

    Oh wait, nevermind.

Mets fans have quite a bit to look forward to. It’s just too easy to point out the Madoff/Wilpon mess, Beltran’s knees, etc. Yes, I know these stories are worth writing, but focusing on one aspect of an organization instead of reporting everything is getting old. Whatever sells, I suppose.
