Just to head this off at the pass…I understand that many people wish this were free.  We decided not to go on that direction.  I think it is worth the money, but I respect those who do not.  Please use this post to discuss the app itself, and not free vs. $2.99.

Looks great so far. I’m a fan of the notifications so now I don’t have to wait until ESPN sends a text 2 days later.

Free or not, I read MLBTR daily, if not hourly so $2.99 is well worth it. Thank you to Tim and the rest of your staff.

I will say that I love this site and have no problem supporting it but I think $1 or $1.50 would make it more attractive vs just going your phone/ tablets built in browser.

Just read a real interesting article about Android vs iOS when it comes to the app store. Right now only 1% of apps in the Android Marketplace are paid. That’s staggering. Then you have the two companies – Apple and Google. Apple is associated with paying a premium for products/services. With Google the mantra is always free.

This is certainly true in my experience. I have hundreds of Android apps between my phone and two tablets (one for me – one for the wife). I have yet to pay for a single app. The paid apps I have are all from Amazon’s Free Paid App A Day. The rest are just the free versions (advertisement supported). Inherently it just feels different to pay for apps on Android that I might otherwise consider paying for on iOS.

In any event I hope that it works out for Tim and crew. No doubt the app will be a big win for those on the go that need to check this information. For long-time viewers of the site we can all definitely appreciate the progress Tim has made on the technology front. These are all steps in the right direction to grow the MLBTradeRumors brand.

Agree. I was excited to read the headline, but have a strict policy against paying for apps. Let me know when the free version is out!

^This.  Why on earth would anyone pay for an android app when every other app for android is free.  Not to mention, the stock android browser will visit this site with no hiccups.

Android developers that need to make money do so through add revenue, not directly from the consumer.  People buy androids because they’re not willing to rack up the monthly costs.  This app is so FAIL.

Thank you for providing this. I won’t be buying it because I don’t really need up-to-the-second news.

As far as the cost…I’d rather just donate to the site anyway.

Enjoying the app as it is much easier to read than using the browser on my phone and much faster too. Having said that I am having a few issues. The app does not seem to support rotation and that makes it impossible for me to see what I am typing until it has been typed out and then I can’t get the cursor to the correct place to correct any typos. Also, it doesn’t allow me to back out of the app which is a bit annoying as I have to go into the settings to close it out so it isn’t constantly running in the background.

The icon is already on my phone home screen. Navigating around the app is SO much easier than using the phone’s browser. Thanks Tim. Keep up the great work.

I’ll rate it on Android Market later when I get home.

    Thanks again Tim!

Is there a delay between content on the website and content on the app? On the website, I click Refresh and see a new post. Then on the app I press Update News (set to All News) but don’t see the new post.

It’s there on the app now. So a couple minutes’ delay?

Couple things from my limited use
    1.  Be nice to have the “pull down” style refresh similar to what facebook or other apps have.  If not then maybe a more convenient to access refresh button instead of having to go to the menu -> refresh

    2.  Hitting the back button seems to just send me into an endless loop of screens but does not allow me to back out of the app, i have to hit the home button to exit.

Awesome job though, i have been waiting for this for a long time!!

First of all I would like to say I am very happy you finally released an Android app Tim, love your site and have no problem paying $2.99 to support it for how much I use it.  Much easier to view on an app then the browser on my phone.  That said, just a couple of things….it would be nice to have an option to post to Facebook and Twitter from the app.  Any chance that option is added in an update soon?

Comments are also buggy, when trying to type this post the app locked up and I had to open the site on my desktop to type this.  Also, when I use the back and forward buttons they don’t work, just send me to the same post.

Love the notification system, seems very fast and posts to the app almost as fast as the actual site.  All in all I like the app, needs a little work but still worth it.  Thanks again Tim!

Not to take away from this app (its a great thing to have), but here’s a workaround for those who don’t want to spend (or don’t have) $2.99 for an app.

    1. Sign up for a google reader account if you don’t already have one (if you have a google account of any kind you already do without knowing it). Its free.

    2. On the MLBTR site, click on the “feeds by team” and then on the RSS symbol for your favorite team. Follow the RSS feed on google reader.

    3. Download the free “gReader” app for Android. It automatically syncs with your google reader account and will automatically deliver every story posted on MLBTR about your favorite team to the app .

    4. Go itno the app settings and set it to allow notifications and viola – you will get an alert as soon as a story is posted about your team.

It takes more time and steps to set up, but its *free* and you doesn’t require much maintanance once you have it all set up.

I like it! Worth the $3 to be able to have it on my phone home screen for one touch updates.

Tim, two questions: First, will the Kindle app be available for the Kindle Fire any time soon? Second, and I am sorry if this is elementary, but I am struggling to understand what the little circle and dot deal is at the top left of the screen. The stories have a similar deal … some with the dot in the circle and some without. Any info would be great. Thanks, and keep up the good work!

Thanks for the reply, Tim! I looked on the Amazon store and it gives you a pull down menu for “compatible devices”. It lists four or five other Kindles but not the Fire. I just got a Fire for Christmas and would love to have the app on it. Let us know what you find out.

    Thanks, again!
