Central Links: Pirates, Padilla, Tigers, Cubs

By Mike Axisa | January 9, 2012 at 10:47pm CDT

Earlier today we learned that two Central teams were having trade talks about Matt Garza, as the Tigers are attempting to acquire the Cubs right-hander. Here's the latest from baseball's two Central divisions…

  • The Pirates will not scout Vicente Padilla next week, reports Rob Biertempfel of The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review (on Twitter). Last week we heard that the 34-year-old righty was throwing 95-96 mph in winter ball.
  • David Kaplan of CSNChicago.com says (on Twitter) that the Tigers have received calls about their veteran players and will listen to offers. Just speculating, but a spare reliever like David Pauley would figure to draw some trade interest.
  • In the wake of the Sean Marshall and Anthony Rizzo trades, Baseball America's Jim Callis looked at the current state of the Cubs farm system. He says Rizzo is their third best prospect behind Brett Jackson and Javier Baez.

The Reds should take a flier on Padilla.  Low risk, high reward.  This guy has always had great stuff, and when properly motivated (next contract) he could be a great low cost pick up!

If Padilla is throwing gas, why not bring him in? He could be another Bartolo Colon? Stranger things have happened, like Colon himself re-emerging last season…

Orioles should be all over Padilla…but they probably won’t even bother scouting him. Too busy in Asia (which isn’t a bad thing in itself).

      Can only dream.

Who’ll give us a new bag of baseballs for him?

    Tigers might deal veterans.
Cubs want to trade Garza to Tigers
“According to sources the cubs are looking to trade Garza to the Tigers for Verlander, Cabrera, and Martinez.” – Buster Olney

That’s just ridiculous. Olney knows the Cubs would demand that Jackson be part of the deal. But they would be willing to throw in Soriano but only if the Tigers paid his salary.

Maybe throwing in a few veterans could let the Tigers keep Smyly or Castellanos?

Baez ahead of Rizzo? I also don’t see why Alonso is more coveted….

It’s a little shocking that the Mets get pick #35 for Jose reyes and the Astros get #39 for Clint Barmes. Just seems wrong

Padilla’s got Sox depth signing all over him. Sign him and let him fight it out in ST for the 5 spot. Then if he falls a little short use him in the pen.

    Bailey
    Melancon
    Aceves
Bowden (Def see him becoming a full time pen piece this year, and a good one)
Rich Hill (If he is healthy)
    Albers
    Padilla
    Jenks

    Not a single no-way-is-Padilla-throwing-in-the-95-96-range comment?

You people are far too trusting of Nicaraguan radar guns!
