Angels Looking For Starting Pitching Depth

By Mike Axisa | March 22, 2012 at 11:46am CDT

Despite having a strong front four of Jered Weaver, Dan Haren, C.J. Wilson, and Ervin Santana, the Angels are looking for starting pitching depth according to Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports. They are focusing on out of options or non-roster players in camp with other clubs, not bigger names like John Lannan.

Garrett Richards, Brad Mills, and Jerome Williams are currently competing for the fifth starter's job, though Williams is battling a hamstring problem. As our out of options list shows, there aren't many teams out there with extra starters who could match up for a trade.

I believe Brian Cashman tried to pull off that trade over the winter and it didn’t work out.

I think that involved A.J Burnett but the reason it didn’t work out because A.J wants to pitch on the East Coast, could be wrong, though.

Yes, I remember that now, it was meant to be an exchange of “bad” contracts.  The Angels were all set to pull the trigger, then AJ killed the deal.  Freddy Garcia to LAA makes a lot of sense, though, depending on what the Angels are willing to give up in return.

Phil Hughes or Freddy Garcia for Mark Trumbo

There is no way they would trade Trumbo for Garcia.  I would have to look at the Hughes figures more, but NO way on Garcia.

except the yankees already have a high power low obp guy in the minors in jorge vazquez, and The yankees kinda value high obp players. so that wouldn’t happen. I wouldn’t know what it would take to get Garcia from the yanks but Trumbo just doesn’t make any sense from the Yanks perspective

LAA hang up nearly immediately, but not before the entire front office fall out of their chairs laughing at a clearly drunk Brian Cashman.

trumbo for nobody!!!!! lets keep this guy,  we have plenty of horses in the barn (pitchers) to get this thing done. if we need to trade for a pitcher we have plenty of other guys we can get rid of. so no more talk of trading trumbo, or collaspo. they are both very valuable to club!!

Don’t judge Davis off one season. If so, then how about Trumbo’s sub .300 OBP? I can play that game too. Davis has the tools to be a very good pitcher, while Trumbo has the tools to be a very good hitter. Pretty even to me

If the Angels would be interested in a mediocre #6 SP type, the Cubs have several options available…please?

I don’t know about #6 types.  It looks like Samardjizda and Volstad will probably make the 4/5 slots, so someone like Randy Wells could be available.  Lopez could give the Cubs a safety net to deal from depth.

I don’t think the Halos will trade Trumbo for anything less than a solid 3rd baseman.  He’ll platoon several position for the next couple of years but once Wells is gone, he’ll move into the outfield with Trout and Bourjos.  Hopefully his OBP improves because they’ll need some sort of protection for Albert. I say this because no way Kendrys stays after 2013 if he returns to form.  K-Mo has hired Boras and will be looking for a big payday.

Leads to the rumors of Blanton for Util IF trade. I think it would benefit both teams quite well. Blanton has proven himself quite well this spring.

I agree, but Philly would have to pay much of Blanton’s contract.  Maicer Izturis for Blanton.

Yea, he would be the other option.  Depends on what the Phils would eat on Blanton’s contract though.  If they would only pay $2M, then I don’t think the Angels would trade either.

Trumbo has looked pretty good at 3rd base and recent comments from Angels Mngmt sound as if they’re very pleased with his progression. It would take an overwhelming offer to get Trumbo at this point. Likely available players: Callaspo, Izturis, Hank Conger or B. Wilson and Rich Thompson (who looks good this Spring but is out of optionS) and of course Abreu.

There is a better chance that they would trade Wells and eat most of his salary than trade either Bourjos or Trumbo for any deal that isn’t a clearly lopsided deal in the Angels favor.
