Yankees Designate Justin Maxwell For Assignment

By Mike Axisa | April 4, 2012 at 2:53pm CDT

The Yankees have designated Justin Maxwell for assignment, reports Mark Feinsand of The New York Daily News (on Twitter). Maxwell is out of options.

Maxwell, 28, hit .260/.358/.588 with 16 homers and 11 steals in 204 Triple-A plate appearances last season before injuring his shoulder. The outfielder had a strong showing in Spring Training could get claimed off waivers.

He’s a very good athlete, should indeed see some interest.

with Andres Torres going to the DL, i wonder if the Mets would be interested…

teams he could end up on (dude who he would replace): o’s (nick johnson), sox (justin thomas/ 60 andrew bailey for 40 spot), rays (vogt), tigers (clete thomas), twins (parmalee), mariners (kawasaki), a’s (jonny gomes), marlins (austin kearns), mets (mike baxter), nats (chad tracY), astros (ruggiano), pads (hermida), giants (brett pill)  8 of these guys are nri’s, so i think a younger bat with a higher ceiling could be an ok pick up, with be traded instead of picked up off waivers

High ceiling?  He’s 28 and in over 100 games at the major league level, he barely has a .200 BA.  He’s a minor league all star, nothing more.  He just plain can’t hit at the major league level.

The Nats already had Maxwell and let him go. He was all promise but no fulfillment. Now, would I enjoy having him back to succeed? Sure, he’s a good kid, and I wish him well. I just don’t believe he has shown it yet.

Braves? I’d rather have him than Constanza or Diaz.

Justin Maxwell = AAAA player.   Or in other words a future Pittsburgh Pirate.

I would like to see the Rangers pick him up.  He would be a good 4th outfielder that could platoon with David Murphy.

You mean like Craig Gentry, who already has that designation?

I’d claim Maxwell if I were the Mets to have some more depth in CF. I still believe he can still come into his own in the big leagues.

Maxwell: .220 AVG 200Ks but 30 SBs and 20 HRs along with well above average CF defense. Sucks that my Yanks kept Ibanez instead of him :[

His split is wrong to replace Ibanez. He’d be replacing Jones (which, production wise, he cannot do).

touche’. but i meant at-bats wise. its at 40 year old on a 1-year deal vs. a more talented 28 year old, should be a no brainer
