Yankees Notes: Pitching, Jackson, Severino, Uggla

By charliewilmoth | July 19, 2014 at 11:12am CDT

The Yankees’ win-now ethos is “refreshing,” Andy Martino of New York Daily News writes. “Oh, he’s out there,” says another team’s GM of Yankees executive Brian Cashman. “He’s really trying to make something happen. I personally don’t think he has the pieces to get a big trade done, but he’s working at it.” After a rash of injuries, the Yankees continue to look for starting pitching, although Martino notes that there aren’t many possibilities, with Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel already off the market and David Price unlikely to be traded within the AL East. The Padres won’t deal Andrew Cashner, Martino writes, and might not trade Ian Kennedy either. That means New York might have to settle for smaller moves. Here are more notes on the Yankees:

  • The Yankees would make sense as a possible destination for Cubs starter Edwin Jackson, Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times writes. The Yankees could afford to pay at least some of the approximately $26MM left on Jackson’s contract.
  • Nonetheless, the Yankees are not close to any move to upgrade their pitching, although they continue to try, Martino tweets.
  • Luis Severino has risen from obscurity to become one of the Yankees’ better prospects, Joel Sherman of the New York Post writes. Sherman tells the story of how Will Kuntz, then the Yankees’ pro scouting director, went to a Yankees spring training minor league game and didn’t even know who Severino was before he clocked him at 95 MPH on his radar gun. The Yankees recently promoted Severino, now 20, to Double-A Trenton after he pitched well at Class A Charleston and dominated at Class A+ Tampa.
  • Cashman says the Yankees have no interest in second baseman Dan Uggla, Martino tweets. That’s no surprise, of course, given that he’s hit .162/.241/.231 in 145 plate appearances this season. The Braves are responsible for the remainder of Uggla’s contract, since they released him.

“That’s no surprise, of course, given the millions remaining on Uggla’s contract (…)”. Aren’t the Braves paying that millions anyway? Uggla would cost the minimum to any team i think.

Exactly, but a prorated amount of the minimum is I believe how it would work. I came in to post that same comment.

A better sentence would be, “That’s not surprising, given that Brian Roberts, Yangervis Solarte and AAA second baseman Rob Refsnyder are probably all superior options, both offensively and defensively, to Uggla at this point in all their respective careers.”

He’s played some RF and he’s played some 2B. It’s strange. They said they were moving him to RF in interest of getting him to the bigs this year but then he played 3 games out there, then 3 back at 2B and now tonight, he was back in right. I don’t know if THEY know what they’re doing.

That would happen after he was eventually released. Not now as they would have to trade for him as he has only been DFAed. In ten days (I think) they would be able to get him at league minimum. Either way I can’t see them signing him to anything other than a minor league deal.

In what world is Edwin Jackson an “upgrade” to New York anyhow? Even with his encouraging peripherals (5.61 ERA vs 3.95 xFIP), he’s still only accumulated a 0.7 WAR in over 100 innings (and are we expecting his HR rate to DROP in New York?). Surely he isn’t worth the roster headaches or the money for such a paltry win total.

We Cubs fans see tons of potential in Edwin Jackson. I think he’d really fit in with what they’re doing in New York. He’s ready to turn a corner. Plus, I think you get to stay at Jackson’s oceanfront timeshare in Arizona! (please, please take him… please! Oh, please!)

I’ll go out on a limb and say this is finally the year the Yankees are able to pick up Cliff Lee by trading a good but not great prospect and taking on most, if not all, of his remaining contract. I know Lee wants to go a contender; the Yankees are only 4 out in the AL East, they won last night and they continue this post-All Star game streak with 2 more against the Reds then 4 against the Rangers and a weekend series against the Blue Jays. If they can roll off some wins here, they’ll be in a much better position.

$50 million for a season and a half of Cliff Lee at age 36/37… not even sure the Yankee$ will be onboard for that one. I think a lot depends of if Tanaka is gone for next year. They might be better off to spread some of that $ around to different areas, they have a lot of holes to fill and not much in the high minors to fill it. They’re going to have to do it almost all through FA.

The starting rotation is the biggest need, if you’re looking at to 2015 and beyond. Around the infield, they have McCann behind the plate, Teix at first, Brendan Ryan at short and they may or may not have something in Yangervis Solarte for second and third (rest of the season will show) and Rob Refsnyder will be in the mix for second base. Brett Gardner and Jacoby Ellsbury will be in the equation for left and center and Carlos Beltran will be at DH. I don’t know how to figure in A-Rod–after 2 years (essentially) out of the game and coming back at age 39, the Yankees may just give him his walking papers. So they need a second/third baseman and a right fielder, maybe an offensive up-grade at short (but then, why did they give Ryan a 2 year deal in the first place? They knew what he was as a hitter, at the time they gave him that contract).

Edwin Jackson isn’t better than anyone currently in the rotation not named Whitley and he’s owed a lot of money. Shades of 2010-11 Burnett in the month of August is what I expect Jackson to pitch…

I would love Jackson to the Yankees. I’m a Cubs fan who would rather see a young SP getting MLB experience then Jackson giving up 5 runs a start. If they took on most of the remaining money it would only cost a low level prospect. You get a durable 5th starter who is still better then a lot of Yankee minor leaguers.

Every team hypes up their prospects and GM’s don’t follow your logic, they have these scout guys that go out and watch these prospects., not go by what a team and a reporters say. I love how people love to think the Yankees haven’t developed good players when in fact they’ve developed guys who have become All Stars or solid players.

1 in over a decade of baseball. It’s no wonder they have won one World Series in that time. You can pay every player on the roster $100 million. You need to develop your own guys. Even the Yankees should know that. They ruled in the 90s and that was because of the core 4.

I believe his comment says the Yankees develop all stars caliber players. The cubs have developed multiple all stars in that time. Zambrano, marmol, Kerry wood, Rizzo, Castro, Samardzija, and soto are all home grown talent who have played in the all star game. Donaldson from the A’s is a cubs farm hand, Ricky Nolasco. Many of these guys aren’t with the team or still in the majors but they were devolved and played in all star games.

He said “All Stars or solid players” which is true. The title “All Star” is meaningless because fans just vote for who they want to see. The only players with star talent that you named are Rizzo and Donaldson. Rizzo wasn’t even drafted by the Cubs, he was from the Red Sox system. Donaldson, yeah i’ll give you that one. Within that time span both teams have only drafted and developed only one true star talent Yankees-Cano and Cubs-Donaldson. Both have developed solid players so let’s not act like the Cubs are far ahead of the Yankees when they are in fact pretty even.

3 time all star because he was voted there by fans, not because he was necessarily the best. Brett Gardner is one of the top outfielders in the AL and has never been nominated as an all star because he isn’t a popular name.

Only the starters are voted by fans and he hasn’t been a starter. So that means the coaches and players voted him to the team. Also Brett Gardner isn’t a top 6 outfielder in either league and he hasn’t been at anytime of his career.

Brett Gardner is a centerfielder who was forced to move to left. not too long ago in 2010 he had a WAR of 7.3. Castro had a negative WAR last year, and his stats this year show he is only average. I don’t know what system you are using but Andrelton Simmons, Troy Tulowitzki, Hanley Ramirez, and Ian Desmond are all NL shortstops who are better than Castro. Again, All Star selections are meaningless because it’s just a system of “favorites”
