Red Sox Acquire Carlos Peguero

By Jeff Todd | May 27, 2015 at 4:50pm CDT

The Red Sox have acquired outfielder Carlos Peguero from the Rangers, Boston announced. Cash is headed back to Texas in the deal. Peguero, who had been designated for assignment by the Rangers last week, will join the Red Sox in Arlington for their upcoming weekend series against his former teammates.

Boston certainly does not appear in want of options in the outfield, but its current mix includes only one left-handed bat: Daniel Nava (a switch-hitter). It is conceivable — though far from certain — that the addition of Peguero could ultimately lead to a transaction involving Nava, though the team has alternative means of clearing active roster space in the near term.

Peguero, 28, brings poor on-base ability but strong power numbers to the table, as his .186/.310/.414 line this year suggests. He did hit 38 home runs at the Triple-A level last year, though he struck out over a third of the time on the way to that prodigious long ball output.

Just what the Red Sox need…another corner outfielder.

Its a depth move. He’ll probably never touch the MLB club, and he’ll get DFA’d within the week by the Sox because they aren’t gonna waste a 40 man roster spot on him.

They actually presently have two open 40 man roster spots, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they keep him.

I know, but we have plenty of outfielders that can’t hit.

Most of whom are injured. He hit 38 hrs at AAA last season. He’s worth a flier.

Not really. Strikes out a ton. Low OBP. Not sure what that does for a team that already has a ton of issues.

I’m sure he’ll win the triple crown. He’s just a bench bat and occasional fill in. Not every move has to be a world beater.

But every move should have a purpose. This move seems pointless.

Good thing the Red Sox didn’t have that attitude when the Twins released Ortiz.

Good point. Every low level pickup should be viewed as a David Ortiz.

Why do they keep picking up outfielders? They came into the season with a glut and now they add more. Get some pitching. Damn.

I thought having baseball players in your organization means you have deep depth? Are you telling me that the *quality* of those players actually matter?!

Unless you mean using that money to buy Hamels a plane ticket, dinner, and a hotel room the first night he’s in town, it’s not going to do much for a Hamels deal.

This deal will happen Colby Lewis will go to Philly in this deal along with Alfaro and cash to get hamels we have the money and prospects and we are getting closer to the Astros in the al west now because fielder is hitting for home runs and we got Hamilton back so look out for the rangers this year because they have won 8 of their last 10 games

Why would the Phillies even consider that? They don’t need a 35 year old arm with a lifetime ERA barely south of 5 and they don’t need cash.

Holy cow. Are things really that bad in Beantown? This is the best LH OF option available? A .194 lifetime BA?

Nieuwenhuis was DFA’d by Mets a week ago, and just acquired by Angels if they needed a cheap body.

.194 would be better than Nava, Craig, not even on the 40 man roster, and JBJ plus he has power. Most likely Castillo will be going on the DL tomorrow and Hanley is overdue for a DL stint. If he can catch the ball and not get hurt he might be a great pick-up.

Castillo is only listed as day-to-day, and Hanley would’ve already been on the DL had it been absolutely necessary. He is going through a slump right now which was bound to happen. He will rebound. Regardless, I’m sure Peguero will get some playing time. Hanley will probably get some extra days off for the time being.

Sad every single OFer we have can’t hit over the mendoza line. This is historically atrocious. You couldn’t pay me all the money in the world to play for this team right now.

Yet knowing the Sox, they probably would lmao.
