Padres Claim Paul Clemens

By Jeff Todd | June 28, 2016 at 1:22pm CDT

The Padres have claimed righty Paul Clemens, Jon Heyman of todaysknuckleball.com reports on Twitter. The 28-year-old was evidently placed on waivers by the Marlins, for whom he had been pitching.

Clemens made two starts for Miami this year, throwing ten innings over which he allowed seven earned earns on 11 hits and eight walks against six strikeouts. He had spent most of the year at Triple-A, pitching to a 4.30 ERA with 7.9 K/9 against 3.0 BB/9 over 75 1/3 frames.

Pomeranz is being traded and clemens is a warm body to take the spot in the rotation.

Can’t be worse than perdomo and johnson.

Erik Johnson 8.54/8.88/5.24 era, fip, xfip in 26.1 inmings 33.3% HR rate 6.79 Ks and 3.74 BB

          Luid Perdomo 8.49/5.43/4.24 25%, 8.15, 4.42 HR, Ks, BB in 53 innings

          Paul Clemens 6.30/11.15/7.15 33%, 5.4, 7.2 HR, K, BB in 10 innings

Yeah, johnson and perdomo are sooooooo much better obviously.

You’d rather they call up kelly or rodriguez if they trade pomeranz? Id rather let kelly and rodriguez get more seasoning at AAA then call them up during a lost season this early.

Should look things up before you respond next time that way you dont embarass yourself man. Dont get diagruntled on me now because of your lack of research skills.

I was actually noting that the waiver claim has nothing to do with Pomeranz in any way, shape or form. And if you’re unable to distinguish the difference between a Rule 5 guy the club is trying to keep around for a few years and a roster-fodder waiver claim who won’t be in San Diego two months from now, that’s not on anyone but you.

And the next addition to the rotation will be Cashner, genius. He’s rehabbing in Elsinore tonight and then will be activated either to take Johnson’s place on Sunday, or perhaps space them out for a six-ish man rotation for the few days going into the break. That would allow them to manage Pomeranz’s and Perdomo’s innings a bit.

          1. Perdomo should be put back in the pen or Johnson should be optioned to triple a to work out his mechanics when cashner comes back. With villanueva and rodney potentially departing perdomo needs to work on his late inning game situations as much as possible assuming quack buchter and maurer are your 7 8 9, not in that order, guys with hand and perdomo as long relief.

          2. If they trade pomeranz, which they should instead of risking his value diminishing, the 6 rotation would be cashner rea johnson perdomo friedrich and someone to fill pomeranz spot, rather it be clemens than rodriguez and kelly who still need more time.

          3. Never implied the waiver claim had anything to do with pomeranz being traded other than he makes sense as the replacement in the rotation. Not hes claimed deal pomeranz asap. Pomeramz is a hot commodity as 1. Hes cheaper than teheran in both price and cost to acquire and 2. He’s posting better numbers than teheran this year.

          Pomeranz: 2.76/3.34/3.66 with 10.44K, 3.99 BB, 10.1% HR
          Teheran: 2.46/3.70/4.02 with 8.41K, 2.04BB, 10.7% HR

It’s not going to be Kelly or Rodriguez, Edwin Jackson was picked up on a league minimum deal a couple weeks back. He will be the first called up to get some mop up starts at the end of the season. He was acquired for #1 because the Cubs are paying his whole salary and for #2 knowing we were going to trade at least one arm from the rotation and he could be a filler until the end of the season.

There should not be any “untouchables” on the Padres. If they can get a good deal for Pomeranz…..run with it. This could be just a hot streak for a guy who has been mediocre his entire career.. Rodney is riding a great wave, too. They’re probably not going to get any great near ready prospects for these guys but roll the dice on some A level kids,

Paul clemens has better stuff than lucas giolito and a young clayton kershaw. Just look at his scouting reports. This could be a sign of a world series coming to san diego! Great move preller!!
