Pirates Designate Cory Luebke For Assignment

By charliewilmoth | June 18, 2016 at 4:14pm CDT

The Pirates have designated lefty Cory Luebke for assignment, Bill Brink of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette writes  (links to Twitter: 1 2 3 4). They’ve also placed righty Juan Nicasio on the restricted list, due to what manager Clint Hurdle describes as personal reasons, and optioned righty Rob Scahill to Triple-A Indianapolis. The moves clear space for corner infielder Jason Rogers and relievers Curtis Partch and Jorge Rondon, who have all been promoted from Triple-A Indianapolis and are all with the team today.

The moves are intended to address the Bucs’ increasingly beleaguered pitching staff. Luebke’s departure comes as little surprise. After missing the last three seasons while having two Tommy John surgeries, the 31-year-old Luebke signed a minor-league deal with the Pirates and briefly attracted positive attention in Spring Training, with some writers concluding his good stuff and pedigree (he was once a solid youngstarter for the Padres) might make him a candidate to revive his career under the tutelage of Pirates pitching coach Ray Searage. That hasn’t come to pass, however, as Luebke has allowed nine runs and 11 walks in just 8 2/3 big-league innings, including an appearance yesterday in which he faced four batters and didn’t record an out.

Maybe there’s a reason the Marlins hired Jim Benedict away from the Pirates instead of Savage….

Yeah, these names don’t sound like they are going to help. It’s June and they are under .500. Won’t even get a chance to choke in the Wildcard Game this year.

Wow. From a team that’s never won anything. Ever.

I remember that… They were one botched double play away from getting out of the 8th inning of game 6 with the lead. What’s your point?

They won the World Series in both 1907 and 1908. One of only eight franchises to do that. Also, they won the NL pregnant in 1945.

If I was 90 years old I would remember that. Or I would’ve been in MLB since WWII was going on , resulting in arguably the lowest talent level ever.

Reading comprehension (not to mention spelling) not a strong suit? So half a season warrants smack talking? You’re really going to hang your hat on something that happened 71 years ago. Wearing pajamas and wacky suits on road trips does not erase the facts that the Cubs have not won anything in 2 lifetimes and Joe the Genius has never won anything.

Reading comprehension? You said “Wow. From a team that’s never won anything. Ever.”

That is not a true statement. They have won championships.

And I did spell apologize correctly. I meant to say apology, but nonetheless apologize was spelled correctly.

I think it would be interesting to see how many double TJ pitchers have had anything close to a successful career after the second surgery. I can only think of a few – Isringhausen (who had three) and Shawn Kelley has been good the past few seasons. Joakim Soria. and Daniel Hudson. Maybe Chris Capuano who I believe had one good season after the second?

But looking around at the current crop of double-TJ survivors isn’t very pretty – Luebke, Minor, Beachy, Medlen, Parker, Brian Wilson, Josh Johnson – they’re all either not coming back at all or pitching very poorly. It would be an interesting thing to study.
