Red Sox Acquire Michael Martinez From Indians

By Steve Adams | July 8, 2016 at 2:06pm CDT

The Indians announced today that utilityman Michael Martinez has been traded to the Red Sox in exchange for cash considerations. Martinez had been designated for assignment this past Saturday.

[Related: Updated Red Sox & Indians Depth Charts]

The 33-year-old Martinez has never hit much in the Majors but brings some defensive versatility to the Red Sox’ depth chart. Though he’s just a .199/.244/.272 hitter at the big league level, Martinez does have experience at second base, third base, shortstop and all three outfield positions. He batted .283/.306/.383 in 63 trips to the plate with Cleveland this season and is a lifetime .282/.336/.395 hitter in parts of nine seasons at the Triple-A level.

They must be gearing up to deal Shaw

Doubtful. He will at best be Hill’s late in game replacement until Shaw gets healthy

If I were them I’d trade him. I don’t want to see him go but I feel like his stats in the future are a wildcard

I’d trade Shaw if it means getting good pitching in return..

Shaw wont attract much, at least not by himself

It would be great if they did trade Shaw, and get top value for him. Usually it’s the other way around. They must know they cannot compete in the playoffs with their starters and bullpen both in a shambles. Wouldn’t it be nice to get a quality AA OR AAA arm for Shaw to plug in to next year, instead of giving up the farm for middle of the road pitching ???

Just don’t ask him to lay down a sacrifice bunt.

He’s a platoon hitter. There are less attractive qualities about him then his ability to bunt

Thanks. I’m well versed about the Indians and their system. The comment was about two separate opportunities where he failed to lay down a pinch hit sacrifice bunt during their win streak.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one:
“Omgherd, he’s a HOFer. Teheran isn’t worth him!” – typical Boston fan.

Someone needs to tell Dombrowski that the Red Sox needs pitching. He must think he’s still in Detroit!

Patience grasshopper! The All Star break isn’t even here yet. I expect to see R. Hill or another pitcher of he caliber traded to the Red Sox. The Sox don’t need to sale the farm for starting pitcher, the team needs 2 solid #4 and #5 starters. Reason R. Hill would be a great fit, move him to #3 and Procello to #4.

Hate to break it to ya bud, but to get Grey/Teheran/Pomeranz they are going to have to give up quite a bit.

Pomeranz is nowhere near the tier of Gray and Teheran, he has a quality half season as a starter while the others have been good to excellent for multiple years

nobody wants any of them pitchers.
we will take Hill and we will be fine with that.
they can keep all those pitchers you mentioned.
because we are keeping all our top propects sorry!!

I don’t think this move will prevent him from trading for a pitcher. Not sure why people get so worked up over little depth moves…

    Next trade…

Red Sox get: Teheran, Albeis, and Vizcaino

Braves get: Moncada, Swihart, and Benentindi

That would be awful for Boston. I just don’t think Teheran is a long-range answer to anyone’s rotation.
