West Notes: Hill, Reddick, Dodgers, Giants, Gurriel

By Jeff Todd | July 21, 2016 at 10:36pm CDT

Athletics lefty Rich Hill still isn’t ready to throw from a mound due to a blister on his pitching hand, manager Bob Melvin told reporters including Comcast’s Joe Stiglich (via Twitter). Though he is keeping his arm in shape by throwing with the blister area covered, the overall progress doesn’t seem quite as advanced as might be hoped. At this point, Oakland just has to hope that Hill can fully recover in time to make one more start before the trade deadline and show that he’s past the issue.

Here’s more from Oakland and elsewhere out west:

  • Outfielder Josh Reddick expressed frustration with the fact that he and the Athletics haven’t engaged in recent extension talks, Stiglich also tweets. Reddick called the situation “kind of disheartening,” presumably referring to the fact that he’s likely to be traded with no new deal in place. Player and team have long been said to be engaging in dialogue over a new deal, but it now seems that the time has passed for an agreement.
  • The Dodgers are still weighing the addition of a power bat even as they consider starters, per Jon Heyman of Fan Rag. That very likely won’t be the Brewers’ Ryan Braun, per the report, as Los Angeles has not shown any inclination to go after him. Jay Bruce of the Reds may be the most realistic target, he suggests, though Carlos Gonzalez of the Rockies could also be pursued. (For what it’s worth, I’d wager that Colorado will be quite reticent to move CarGo within the division, if it’s willing to do so at all.)
  • Giants executive VP of baseball ops Brian Sabean tells Alex Pavlovic of CSNBayArea.com that his club isn’t just looking to build out the depth in its relief corps. “It’s not just going to be the average Joe coming in,” he said. “You’re thinking it’s going to be a meaningful piece, but the competition on the premium people is going to be real stiff and it already is.” Sabean explained that the preference is for a high-strikeout arm who “could really get through an inning and not have much flak in getting through the inning” — rather than what he described as “contact relievers.”
  • Astros manager A.J. Hinch said appearance yesterday on MLB Network Radio on Sirius XM (Twitter link) that he expects just-signed third baseman Yulieski Gurriel to be ready for the majors in relatively short order. “We want his bat in the line-up, we want him to get acclimated as much as possible,” said Hinch. “That’s probably 2 or 3 weeks.” In the meantime, outfielder Preston Tucker has been called back to the big league club to take the place of the optioned A.J. Reed.

You know, it’s kind of funny…usually with a baseball player says they won’t discuss their contract situation during the season – they don’t whine to the media about it. Reddick isn’t worth what the A’s originally offered in the first place (3 years $50 Million). You can make a strong argument that he is the worst RF in the AL West.

What a ridiculous way to comp players. Reddick has the 7th best RF fWAR since 2012 (0.1 behind Braun) and is having a solid 2.5 FWAR season this year. That’s still got him in the top dozen or so RFs currently and he has a .300/.378/.441 slash line with quality defense (although he isn’t as good as he was before he hurt his shoulder in Houston). Also, none of the other RF’s in the AL West are available in trades, so using that example becomes even more asinine.

tl; dr: don’t comp players based on what players play the same position as they do within their own division.

Then pull the trigger, Sabean. Don’t wait for the bullpen to blow another weeks worth of games while the Dodgers creep closer to make a trade. With a half competent bullpen they would be about 10 games up. Calling the Giants bullpen a dumpster fire is an insult to dumpster fires.

The Giants have never really had elite arms in the pen. Most of the credit should be given to Bochy as he’s always been able to set his players up for success by finding the most favorable spots for them in games. Nobody does it better than Bochy in my opinion.

    • rayanselmo

Disagree slightly – most of the Giants’ relievers have ranged from passable to very good. However, a) no one in the ‘pen has been lights-out this year, and b) their two lefties, Lopez and Osich, have been exactly the garbage-receptacle conflagration you described. They need a K-racking southpaw more than they need air.

      Reply
      • gilgunderson

Agreed, though I would submit that Brian Wilson in his prime was in fact an elite arm. Bochy has been a master at using decent to very good parts to the best possible effect, but the older guys are starting to fade too much (Lopez, Casilla) and the young guys haven’t stepped up enough (Osich, Strickland).

I’ve always thought the main way to improve that bullpen is to add quality at the back end, which would make the entire pen deeper. I don’t think another middle reliever will be enough of an improvement. If the Giants can’t or won’t go all in for Miller or Chapman, I think David Robertson would be a good addition. Will Smith would be a good addition to the middle relief corps, but much of the rest of the market looks underwhelming and overpriced.

Team control should be another factor the Giants use to weight a trade, as so much of their bullpen will be free agents this winter (Casilla, Lopez, Romo).

Also Urias is doing just fine. Once he learns how to pitch effectively outside the strike zone he’s going to be great. You can’t knock him for that after only a few big league starts. Kershaw struggled with the same thing when he came up. He focuses too much on striking guys out and it raises his pitch count. Plus you have to consider he’s only 19 and the dodgers have been extremely careful with his workload.

Regardless of Urias gets past the 6 inning in what’s been 7 starts is still baseballs #1 pitching prospect at 19. AT 19. ONE MORE TIME, AT 19. All prospects are unproven. That’s why they are prospects and that’s also what EVERY team wants back when selling off pieces. And Joc is halfway through his 2nd full season after being baseballs #1 prospect. He’s already made huge improvements and is going to win a gold glove and has tremendous power. Teams would and were lined up to acquire him. All info you would probably know if you were knowledgable ABOUT THESE KINDS OF THINGS.

Urias is going through what all young pitchers go through. On the things you look for at an early stage in a pitcher’s development, this kid is off the charts. The Dodgers would be nuts to trade him for anybody.

mlb_91: If you want people to take you seriously, you should probably use correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

Also, I truly and sincerely hope the “91” in your name does not mean that you were born in 1991. If you are twenty-four or twenty-five years old, that comment was just inexcusable and reprehensible.

I never comment about someone’s grammar, spelling, nor punctuation on here, simply because it is the Internet not an English class. Although, with that being said, this was just simply terrible, or as Charles Barkley would say, “turrible!” lol

Urias isn’t pitching deep into games because the Dodgers are being incredibly cautious with him, as they well should for a 19-year old. He’s coming up on an innings limit soon, so I’m guessing the short starts are a big part of that.

Having the pieces is only part of the equation. You must be willing to sell the farm, and have a receptive trade partner. Most owners object to putting all the eggs in one basket, or in the case of the trade partner, moving the best player on the team. That is why block busters are rare.

Colorado is not going to able to demand more from the Dodgers than they would from anybody else. The entire question comes down to whether either team really wants to make a major swap within their division. It happens, just not a lot. In any case Puig reported some hamstring tightness and was removed from yesterday’s game, so that probably puts any thoughts about the Dodgers making a RF move on ice for now.

With the White Sox apparently willing to sell off many of their short term veteran assets as the trade deadline approaches how about a trade involving Todd Frazier to the Dodgers?

I have to believe that the White Sox would be more than willing to reacquire Frankie Montas, Trayce Thompson and Micah Johnson who were sent to the Dodgers in the 3-team trade made for Frazier with the Reds last off-season.

The White Sox may also still have some interest in Yasiel Puig, whom they reportedly pursued last winter but were rebuffed by the Dodgers who preferred dealing Andre Ethier or Carl Crawford instead.

Either of those trade scenarios might make sense for the White Sox and Dodgers as the August 1st deadline approaches. An expanded deal involving relievers such as David Robertson and Zach Duke might also be feasible. If the Dodgers prefer an outfielder instead of a third baseman, perhaps switch-hitting Melky Cabrera could be substituted for Frazier. Both players have an identical amount of team control available, through the 2017 season.

Larry Baer has said the team prefers to take on salary over moving top prospects.

I can’t see the White Sox moving Eaton for anything less than premium young talent, so he’s likely not a candidate for SF.

However, Robertson is owed $25M over the next two seasons and has been struggling this year. The White Sox will have a hard time convincing teams to both take on his salary and give up a premium return.

Something along the lines of Robertson for Chris Shaw could very well be fair.
