Athletics lefty Rich Hill still isn’t ready to throw from a mound due to a blister on his pitching hand, manager Bob Melvin told reporters including Comcast’s Joe Stiglich (via Twitter). Though he is keeping his arm in shape by throwing with the blister area covered, the overall progress doesn’t seem quite as advanced as might be hoped. At this point, Oakland just has to hope that Hill can fully recover in time to make one more start before the trade deadline and show that he’s past the issue.
Here’s more from Oakland and elsewhere out west:
- Outfielder Josh Reddick expressed frustration with the fact that he and the Athletics haven’t engaged in recent extension talks, Stiglich also tweets. Reddick called the situation “kind of disheartening,” presumably referring to the fact that he’s likely to be traded with no new deal in place. Player and team have long been said to be engaging in dialogue over a new deal, but it now seems that the time has passed for an agreement.
- The Dodgers are still weighing the addition of a power bat even as they consider starters, per Jon Heyman of Fan Rag. That very likely won’t be the Brewers’ Ryan Braun, per the report, as Los Angeles has not shown any inclination to go after him. Jay Bruce of the Reds may be the most realistic target, he suggests, though Carlos Gonzalez of the Rockies could also be pursued. (For what it’s worth, I’d wager that Colorado will be quite reticent to move CarGo within the division, if it’s willing to do so at all.)
- Giants executive VP of baseball ops Brian Sabean tells Alex Pavlovic of CSNBayArea.com that his club isn’t just looking to build out the depth in its relief corps. “It’s not just going to be the average Joe coming in,” he said. “You’re thinking it’s going to be a meaningful piece, but the competition on the premium people is going to be real stiff and it already is.” Sabean explained that the preference is for a high-strikeout arm who “could really get through an inning and not have much flak in getting through the inning” — rather than what he described as “contact relievers.”
- Astros manager A.J. Hinch said appearance yesterday on MLB Network Radio on Sirius XM (Twitter link) that he expects just-signed third baseman Yulieski Gurriel to be ready for the majors in relatively short order. “We want his bat in the line-up, we want him to get acclimated as much as possible,” said Hinch. “That’s probably 2 or 3 weeks.” In the meantime, outfielder Preston Tucker has been called back to the big league club to take the place of the optioned A.J. Reed.

You know, it’s kind of funny…usually with a baseball player says they won’t discuss their contract situation during the season – they don’t whine to the media about it. Reddick isn’t worth what the A’s originally offered in the first place (3 years $50 Million). You can make a strong argument that he is the worst RF in the AL West.
BoldyMinnesota
He’s not worse than choo, but he is behind the other 3 easily.
A'sfaninUK
What a ridiculous way to comp players. Reddick has the 7th best RF fWAR since 2012 (0.1 behind Braun) and is having a solid 2.5 FWAR season this year. That’s still got him in the top dozen or so RFs currently and he has a .300/.378/.441 slash line with quality defense (although he isn’t as good as he was before he hurt his shoulder in Houston). Also, none of the other RF’s in the AL West are available in trades, so using that example becomes even more asinine.
tl; dr: don’t comp players based on what players play the same position as they do within their own division.
Snorgator
“Worst right fielder in the AL west” wouldn’t even be bad considering who else is there…still better then choo though
natsfan3437
Reddick is worth that and more. He isn’t the worst rf in the al west he is better than choo and Cruz. Choo is awful and Cruz can’t play defense
JoeyPankake
Then pull the trigger, Sabean. Don’t wait for the bullpen to blow another weeks worth of games while the Dodgers creep closer to make a trade. With a half competent bullpen they would be about 10 games up. Calling the Giants bullpen a dumpster fire is an insult to dumpster fires.
arodgers661
The Giants have never really had elite arms in the pen. Most of the credit should be given to Bochy as he’s always been able to set his players up for success by finding the most favorable spots for them in games. Nobody does it better than Bochy in my opinion.
rayanselmo
Disagree slightly – most of the Giants’ relievers have ranged from passable to very good. However, a) no one in the ‘pen has been lights-out this year, and b) their two lefties, Lopez and Osich, have been exactly the garbage-receptacle conflagration you described. They need a K-racking southpaw more than they need air.
gilgunderson
Agreed, though I would submit that Brian Wilson in his prime was in fact an elite arm. Bochy has been a master at using decent to very good parts to the best possible effect, but the older guys are starting to fade too much (Lopez, Casilla) and the young guys haven’t stepped up enough (Osich, Strickland).
I’ve always thought the main way to improve that bullpen is to add quality at the back end, which would make the entire pen deeper. I don’t think another middle reliever will be enough of an improvement. If the Giants can’t or won’t go all in for Miller or Chapman, I think David Robertson would be a good addition. Will Smith would be a good addition to the middle relief corps, but much of the rest of the market looks underwhelming and overpriced.
Team control should be another factor the Giants use to weight a trade, as so much of their bullpen will be free agents this winter (Casilla, Lopez, Romo).
mlb_91
Trade Urias, De Leon, Pederson for Jose Quintana
arodgers661
That would be one of the worst overpays ever.
mlb_91
OVERPAY SERIOUSLY ?? UR A DODGERS FAN THAT WHY U SAY THAT URIAS CANT GET PASSED THE 6 INNING DE LEON ISNT PROVEN EITHER AND PEDERSON STRIKES OUT TO MUCH SALE IN THE OTHER HAND IS A PROVEN PITCHER AND HE CAN TAKE KERCHAWS SPOT RIGHT NOW SINCE HES INJURED
jp08
Does all caps make you right?
arodgers661
He said Quintana, not sale. Calm down dude lol. And even that package is too much for sale. You should also realize we’re stretching pretty thin in our outfield so why trade our starting cf?
arodgers661
Also Urias is doing just fine. Once he learns how to pitch effectively outside the strike zone he’s going to be great. You can’t knock him for that after only a few big league starts. Kershaw struggled with the same thing when he came up. He focuses too much on striking guys out and it raises his pitch count. Plus you have to consider he’s only 19 and the dodgers have been extremely careful with his workload.
JohnnyDodger
Regardless of Urias gets past the 6 inning in what’s been 7 starts is still baseballs #1 pitching prospect at 19. AT 19. ONE MORE TIME, AT 19. All prospects are unproven. That’s why they are prospects and that’s also what EVERY team wants back when selling off pieces. And Joc is halfway through his 2nd full season after being baseballs #1 prospect. He’s already made huge improvements and is going to win a gold glove and has tremendous power. Teams would and were lined up to acquire him. All info you would probably know if you were knowledgable ABOUT THESE KINDS OF THINGS.
BlueSkyLA
Urias is going through what all young pitchers go through. On the things you look for at an early stage in a pitcher’s development, this kid is off the charts. The Dodgers would be nuts to trade him for anybody.
bravesfan88
mlb_91: If you want people to take you seriously, you should probably use correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
Also, I truly and sincerely hope the “91” in your name does not mean that you were born in 1991. If you are twenty-four or twenty-five years old, that comment was just inexcusable and reprehensible.
I never comment about someone’s grammar, spelling, nor punctuation on here, simply because it is the Internet not an English class. Although, with that being said, this was just simply terrible, or as Charles Barkley would say, “turrible!” lol
Bruin1012
Actually the White Sox would flat turn that down for Sale
davidcoonce74
Urias isn’t pitching deep into games because the Dodgers are being incredibly cautious with him, as they well should for a 19-year old. He’s coming up on an innings limit soon, so I’m guessing the short starts are a big part of that.
baumer16
I’m not a Dodgers or White Sox fan but that deal is definitely not an overpay for Quintana.
tigermr1
Yes it definitely is an overpay. I hate the dodgers and white sox but I can tell that’s an overpay
Frank Richard
Peterson was never baseballs #1 prospect. He wasn’t to far off but never that high. Outside of that I agree with everything else you said.
Matthew23Baltimore
He said Quintana not Sale and it’s an overpay. I don’t like the Dodgers or White Sox
baumer16
Nah considering Pomeranz just got a top 15 prospect in all of baseball and I know pretty much everyone and anyone would rather have Quintana than Pomeranz his value will now be higher than that. So convos would start with Urias. And even though I don’t think the Dodgers would do it that doesn’t make it an unfair deal
afenton530
Lol
jmcossio87
Lol. Troll of the day.
JohnnyDodger
Urias and Deleon do not enter into any trade together unless it’s a Sale type deal. Ace #1
And it still doesn’t happen.
baumer16
And it would cost a lot more than that to get Sale
Bruin1012
Your right because the White Sox would flat out say no for those two for Sale.
Bruin1012
Sale is probably the most Valuable commodity in Baseball. When you factor that he is one of the two or three best pitchers in baseball and on a very team friendly contract the amount you would have to pay for him in this pitcher market wow I don’t know what it would be but it would be a lot more than Urias and Deleon.
rycm131
I feel like Matt Harvey will pitch before Rich Hill returns from his blister
halos101
that’d be one brutal blister
ammiel
Anyone else sniff a Dodgers blockbuster? A power bat, starting pitcher trade…De La Rosa with Gonzalez, DeSclafini with Bruce or maybe a blow the Braves away and get Freeman/Teheran? They are one team that surely has the pieces to get whoever they want!
jp08
Dodgers would do better to look into Beltran/ Chapman/ CC. All are experienced and 2 or the 3 are rentals.
dwhitt3
Actually all 3 would be rentals
jp08
CC has an option that will vest if he does not end the season on the DL for a shoulder injury. 90% chance it vests giving said team 1 more year of control albeit at a high price.
baseball0021
And play Freeman where? He’s a 1B only and not much of a power bat and they’ve already got A-Gon
BlueSkyLA
Well it looks great on paper.
Connorsoxfan
Didn’t Freeman catch before? That may have been awhile ago, I forget.
BlueSkyLA
An easy thing to check. In his first season in the rookie league he played five games at 3B and that is it for positions other than 1B. So maybe in Little League but never professionally.

Having the pieces is only part of the equation. You must be willing to sell the farm, and have a receptive trade partner. Most owners object to putting all the eggs in one basket, or in the case of the trade partner, moving the best player on the team. That is why block busters are rare.
Ray Ray
The last major trade between the Rockies and Dodgers was Pedro Astacio for Eric Young Sr. I seriously doubt the Rox have any notion of putting CarGo in Dodger blue unless the return is VERY significant.
BlueSkyLA
Colorado is not going to able to demand more from the Dodgers than they would from anybody else. The entire question comes down to whether either team really wants to make a major swap within their division. It happens, just not a lot. In any case Puig reported some hamstring tightness and was removed from yesterday’s game, so that probably puts any thoughts about the Dodgers making a RF move on ice for now.
SilvioDante
Reddick will be in LF playing for the Cubs w/in 5 days.
stymeedone
Did you also predict Montgomery to the Cubs bullpen?
jmgara
Re: Giants: Good on Sabean for only looking for quality back-end reliever. Casilla has shown vulnerability and we will need 9th inning lockdown guy to be successful in playoffs. Romo might be answer if no trade is made, but if a top closer is reasonably available — get him.
Bob Smiley
Robertson will head to the Giants. Des and Bruce will go to Texas. Archer will land in LA. the Cubs will get Reddick and the Todd Father?? not sure
kevb2016
Why would Cubs land Todd Frazier?
Ray Ray
He’s not saying Frazier to the Cubs, he is saying he is not sure where Frazier goes.
Aaron Sapoznik
With the White Sox apparently willing to sell off many of their short term veteran assets as the trade deadline approaches how about a trade involving Todd Frazier to the Dodgers?
I have to believe that the White Sox would be more than willing to reacquire Frankie Montas, Trayce Thompson and Micah Johnson who were sent to the Dodgers in the 3-team trade made for Frazier with the Reds last off-season.
The White Sox may also still have some interest in Yasiel Puig, whom they reportedly pursued last winter but were rebuffed by the Dodgers who preferred dealing Andre Ethier or Carl Crawford instead.
Either of those trade scenarios might make sense for the White Sox and Dodgers as the August 1st deadline approaches. An expanded deal involving relievers such as David Robertson and Zach Duke might also be feasible. If the Dodgers prefer an outfielder instead of a third baseman, perhaps switch-hitting Melky Cabrera could be substituted for Frazier. Both players have an identical amount of team control available, through the 2017 season.
jp08
Dodgers Turner hit his 16th/ 17th tonight. I think they would go for Robertson and take Shields as a throw in. The White Sox could entice a solid prospect with that deal.
ammiel
i agree the Sox are a logical trade partner for the Dodgers, but im not sure they need a 3B upgrade, as Turner has been great lately, unless they move him to 1B and really believe A Gon is done? The Dodgers would surely be interested in something like Quintana and Eaton for Puig + a pitching prospect
flytheew1
You’ll need alot more then Puig + a pitching prospect for Quintana and Eaton…Quintana would be a #1 for alot of teams if he actually got some run support which he has never had on the south side and Eaton is more valuable then people think, coming from a Cubs fan
jp08
An article earlier said the White Sox flatly refused to trade Q. Also IMO Eaton > Puig, Q > any pitching prospect straight up.
ammiel
i think Puig has a higher ceiling than Eaton, just my opinion. And i realize the Sox probably dont want to trade Q. I just think the Dodgers can make deals happen, like not many other teams. I think it looks ominous that they will make some kind of blockbuster happen, like they usually do when they need something.
halos101
ceiling doesn’t always mean anything. at this point I would much rather have Eaton on my team than Puig in my opinion
baseball0021
No way Dodgers trade Johnson, Montas, and Thompson for Frazier. If they’d wanted Frazier, they would have just traded with the Reds (in the offseason) who obviously liked their prospects better. Frazier hasn’t exactly gained value since the deal either
arodgers661
Dodgers could have just given the package that went to the Reds to get Frazier. They passed on him for a reason. Turner has been great this season despite his slow start.
xnickgillettex
What are some Giants fans thoughts on Vizcaino? Susac is who I’d ask for but I’m not familiar too with the Giants farm
gilgunderson
He would be a decent to good addition to the Giants’ bullpen. The inconsistency and injury problems of late are a concern. Susac might be a slightly high price to pay but he’s had injuries himself and been stuck at AAA and everyone knows the Giants’ depth at catcher.
At this point I’d prefer a more experienced closer like Robertson.
afenton530
Giants get: Jeremy Hellickson, Hector Neris
Phillies get: Kyle Crick and Sam Coonrod
ejkostuke
No two rentals for 2 top 10 prospects
afenton530
Does anyone else’s comment just not show up on occasion?
afenton530
Or show up twice?
casey
I’d love to see Derek Law get a shot at closing. High strike out, low walk guy. Can’t be worse than casilla has been. Best current option they have in my opinion. I’d love a lock down closer, but the farm is thin as it is. pulling the trigger on a big time arm will not be good in the future, especially the young arms that will be ready in the next year or two. I say add a mid tier guy if you can do it cheap, for depth.
CrushCity
have to be showcasing tucker for a trade before houston calls up bregman.
astros_fan_84
Tucker for Carlos Beltran?
Strosfan337
I can see that we need to cash in on an outfielder that makes contact if only a way to put Gomez in a deal to send him away he’s a good defender but not worth what the astros gave up but its gotta be hard to trade a guy making 8 mill a year with terrible production at the plate. Only teams that will take him will be one that can afford it. I don’t like trading in the division but the way Seattle is looking I would put Tucker and Gomez if possible for Leonis Martin.
bleacherbum
I wonder if the Padres would want to trade in division. Ryan Buchter to the Giants for one of either Coonrod, Black or Crick?
East Coast Bias
Giants would be the prime target to get one of the Yankees relievers, but a handful of playoff bound teams can easily beat their top bid for Miller/Chapman.
duck33
The dodgers are quietly approaching NYY level of contract bloat, lots of aging veterans with big money. Their strong farm system is the only thing preventing them alive and they should be less inclined to trade prospects then they seem
puigpower
Contract bloat? The only players signed past 2018 is Kershaw and he has an opt-out. If he does opt out, they are paying $3.5M in 2019. Also, who said they were inclined to trade prospects?
BlueSkyLA
The sportswriters, of course.
texrangers
Why are so many people down on Ryan Braun? The guy always produces. I would love him in my favorite teams uniform!
adshadbolt
Giants: David Robertson and Adam Eaton
White sox: Phil Bickford, Aramis Garcia and ptbnl
Matthew23Baltimore
Depends who the ptbnl is.If he is actually good then maybe. But otherwise no
mrnatewalter
Larry Baer has said the team prefers to take on salary over moving top prospects.
I can’t see the White Sox moving Eaton for anything less than premium young talent, so he’s likely not a candidate for SF.
However, Robertson is owed $25M over the next two seasons and has been struggling this year. The White Sox will have a hard time convincing teams to both take on his salary and give up a premium return.
Something along the lines of Robertson for Chris Shaw could very well be fair.
