Blue Jays Claim Neil Ramirez

By Jeff Todd | May 4, 2017 at 12:47pm CDT

The Blue Jays have claimed righty Neil Ramirez off waivers from the Giants, per a club announcement. San Francisco had recently designated him for assignment.

Ramirez, who’ll soon turn 28, was knocked around in his 10 1/3 innings on the year with the Giants, coughing up 15 earned runs. But he retired 18 batters via strikeout while only issuing four free passes. Optimists can also point to Ramirez’s current .500 BABIP and 33.0% strand rate — both of which are unlikely to continue at such extremes.

Toronto will plug Ramirez onto the active roster, as he’s out of options. The club will hope the luck can turn for the righty, who has struggled with injury in recent years but has at times been quite impressive. Thus far in 2017, he has shown an increase in average fastball velocity (to 92.8 mph) and swinging-strike rate (12.6%) as against his 2016 numbers.

Hmm at first glance I thought okay nothing to see here… But after thinking about it for a minute this sort of reminds me of the Jeremy Accardo pickup from a few years back. Decent arm that couldn’t figure it out and came in and actually had some strong stretches for the jays. Our pen isn’t strong at all so hey it’s worth a shot at least he’s got a decent arm.

Yep. I’d take pretty much anything at this point. Can he also hit? Please?

Another roll of the dice by Shapiro/Atkins…I guess they have not learned the house always wins in the end.

Look at Benoit/grilli last year. They turned them around and were huge down the stretch run. At least give Ramirez a chance to follow in that mold

Oh finally, the Jays have done something to really help the club, the season is saved! lol. Sarcasm heavy.

So what big moves can be made at this time of year, genius of misplaced sarcasm?

Never has a solution other than “get another ace”. Anything further, he would need instructions from his peers on the Planet Genius.

Hi Guys, At this time of year, the best the Jays can do is shop around using minor league talent to see what the marketplace will bring. Ramirez isn’t going to help anything and anyone. Perhaps they can find some big arm reliever types in the minors via trades. That would essentially mean they are preparing for next year. Realistically I would be doing the status quo thing for the next 2 months and then re-evaluate depending on what happens between now and then. They may get on a run but the talent isn’t deep enough to win. Much like I said in spring training that they were not going to compete for a playoff spot this year, my next prediction is that the Jays will be bigtime sellers at the deadline. There will be no miracle comeback this year. The Management types rightfully won’t declare the season over publically until the trading deadline and then it will be obvious. I would make everyone available for a trade except maybe Stroman and Osuna. I will still watch with interest because I care about this team.

Who was removed from the 40-man roster to make room?

I think they had a spot open after removing Saltalamacchia a few days back.

How bad does your bullpen have to be to take the Giants bullpen cast offs? No wonder the O’s, Yankees and Sox are kicking their behind.

It’s bad. Biagini and loup have been the only real effective pitchers. Tepera has been good too but his stats are skewed because Howell gave up a walk off grand slam and he had to intentionally walk two guys
