Padres Acquire Matt Szczur

By Jeff Todd | May 8, 2017 at 7:49pm CDT

The Padres have acquired outfielder Matt Szczur from the Cubs, per club announcements. Chicago will acquire righty Justin Hancock in exchange for Szczur, who had been designated for assignment.

Since the Cubs were able to find some kind of return for the out-of-options Szczur, there must’ve been interest from other organizations. The 27-year-old had not been playing much this year in Chicago, recording just four hits in 23 trips to the plate, and has long been seen as a possible trade target for other organizations.

Last season, though, Szczur played a bigger role on the Cubs’ World Series-winning roster. He appeared in 107 games, in fact, though he took only 200 plate appearances. Szczur slashed a solid .259/.312/.400 with five home runs on the year while providing quality glovework. Szczur has typically performed much better against left-handed than right-handed pitching, so he’ll presumably function in some kind of platoon with San Diego.

In order to acquire Szczur, the Friars gave up Hancock, a 26-year-old hurler who has shown promise at times. But he has been hit hard in the early going at Double-A this year — where he has converted to a pen role after previously working almost exclusively as a starter. Hancock ranked as San Diego’s No. 25 prospect (per Baseball America) prior to the 2016 season, drawing praise for a 92-95 mph fastball and a changeup that flashes plus on occasion. BA notes that his slight frame and lack of a true out pitch make a future as a starter unlikely, however, and the Padres seemingly agreed by shifting him to relief work in 2017. Injuries may also have played a part in changing Hancock’s role, as he spent the majority of the 2016 season on the disabled list with Triple-A El Paso after an arthroscopic procedure on his right shoulder.

Imagine going from the Cubs to the 2017 Padres. At least he’ll have good weather and maybe a starting job.

@ChesterArthur No, because you couldn’t be bothered typing outfield. It’s a bit like outfielders and infielders that don’t call each other off the ball on fly balls in the outfield, it is called laziness and it is also poor communication.

Injuries have put a crimp in that idea. They have two guys that are down and won’t be back until June at the earliest. Blash has been a disappointment, to say the least. The Padres two rookie OF have played just about every game and that can’t be good. Szczur should b able to fill in for them in LF and RF to give guys some rest. All in all an improvement for the Padres and a guy that is cheap and under team control for several years.

Unfortunately, you’re right about Blash. I know the chances of him being a late bloomer either of the last two seasons were slim, but I was really hoping he’d stick as a bench bat at the very least.

Worth a shot, can’t be any worse than the Jankowski/Blash experiment out there in left. Nice stop gap option too if they plan to delay Margot’s clock at some point soon by sending him to AAA.

Good trade for the Friars but holy cow looking at Hancock’s stats makes one miserable. Six years in the minors, dude’s career bush league, his stuff’s lollipop and apparently has an iron glove. Seriously, I’m pretty sure Szczur was out of options so maybe he demanded a trade – can’t make sense outta this otherwise.

      Szczur doesn’t demand anything.

He was out of options, and designated for assignment. Getting Hancock is better than getting $25,000.

He was, likely, the best prospect offered in exchange.

No need for snark. It’s kind of easy to walk through it.

Getting a pitcher who was a reasonable starter in Double-A before being injured, might well be the best offer the Cubs received.

As it stands, he’s been not spent enough time optioned out to El Paso yet for this year to count as an option year. I suspect he ultimately will log the 20 days out there, but it hasn’t happened yet (much as it didn’t in 2015).

Based off how they handled Perdomo last year and how easy the could have offered him back to St.Louis after the first month or two of the season when he was atrocious, they stayed pat and it paid off. I think they will do the same with Diaz, Cordoba and Torrens. Diaz has been getting rocked lately but as the long man in the pen it’s worth hanging on to him and only using him in low leverage situations to rebuild his confidence, his stuff is too good to just give up on him 30 games into the season.

Yeah they will all stay and rightfully so honestly. They have all showed flashes of why they were chosen by Preller. Maybe Córdoba and Diaz more because they have been exposed to a higher degree than Torrens so far, but as a 21 year old catcher who is asked to play sparingly I think this year is going to be more of a mental than physical learning tool for him.

Plus we don’t have much catching depth in the minors, Hedges was the diamond in the rough we were all waiting for and the next impactful C in the wings would be Austin Allen and he is in Fort Wayne right now. So stashing Torrens now and allow him to play every day next year at San Antonio or El Paso makes a ton of sense.

I’ll miss Matt Szczur. Heck, I finally learned how to spell his name. I hope he gets to actually play for the Padres and doesn’t get sent to the AAA El Paso Chihuahuas. Now *that* would be humiliating.

I hate to second guess Theo but Justin is pitching in AA and has an ERA over 6.0. What could he possibly bring to the table for the Cubs? We already have a pitcher named Justin that has an ERA over 7.0.

Jed Hoyer did draft Justin Hancock here in San Diego in 2011 so maybe he feels like they can make some tweaks to get him right. I mean it’s a free flier for a guy you would have just lost on waivers otherwise so why not? Depth filler as a worst case scenario for CHC, overall good trade for both sides. No risk on either.

He looks to have missed much of 2016 due to injury.

The first year back is a problem sometimes. At least he (historically) limits walks. Not ideal, but he’ll serve in the Smokies bullpen in Double-A when someone gets called up to Ioiwa.

Well, this isn’t much of a trade — just one step up from a straight waiver claim.

The reasonable question was (and, perhaps, still is) whether rivals would perceive him as not being trustworthy to deal with, which could conceivably impact discussions in many ways. I can’t imagine anyone even half-seriously suggesting that Preller (and, by extension, his organization) would be straight-away blacklisted.

Come on. I know you read the comments. There have been tons of people saying that “No one will trade with Preller again. Ever.”
As for what you were saying, Preller is certainly trustworthy to deal with now cuz he knows MLB is watching him and if he tries anything fishy he’ll never have a job in MLB again. Not even cleaning the toilets.
Plus, we as outsiders don’t know if it was Preller himself who gave the order to have two sets of medicals.

Well, maybe some commenters have taken some liberties with expansive arguments. I guess I thought it was directed more at serious commentary. Anyway, I agree that it would have been silly then and still would be now to suggest that the Padres just wouldn’t be able to engage in trade dialogue.

That said … I don’t see how Norris proves much. The Nats needed to shore things up at the beginning of the winter, so took him on as an insurance policy right off the bat. And they weren’t able to find a taker late, when teams knew they could just let the Nats cut him loose and then sign him for less. Worked out well for SD, and generally suggests that teams will deal with SD (as I said — of course that’s the case), but doesn’t really give us any insight into the more nuanced ways in which his/the team’s standing could (only could!) be compromised.

Most significant trade since the suspension was probably Derek Norris and he was really their only obvious trade candidate as of the end of last season. Everyone else is either part of the long-term plan or no one wants them. And of course the Nats weren’t able to trade Norris 3 months later so if anything, no one wants to trade with them XD

Yeah and honestly the only time where Preller will even remotely begin to get second guessed is when a rival team is giving up a lot of valuable prospect currency. The only reason the Pomeranz/Rea trades are scrutinized as heavily as they are is because of the value San Diego received. Take away Naylor and Espinoza and the story wouldn’t have been as big as it was.

So the next time I think chirping will start to happen regarding AJ is when the prospect value returning to SD in future trades begins to increase.

No, the jury is very much in. Preller was able to trade Norris and the Nats weren’t. Trading with Preller is safer than anyone else because he knows MLB is watching him so he has to be thorough with the medical records which other teams aren’t necessarily doing. If some contender has a need, the Padres have a player who can fill that need and they can’t get better value elsewhere they will make that trade every time.

Man your logic is so biased. And I say this as a Pads fan, who likes Preller’s direction.
If even 20% of the teams are concerned about Preller’s forthrightness, then the Pads may be getting only, say, 85 cents on the dollar. We don’t know either way, it that type of scenario is certainly possible. For sure, getting a scrub for Derek Norris trade doesn’t prove your point.

NO THEY WILL NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have already proven that Preller can never try anything fishy again (knows MLB is watching him, will never get another job in MLB if he breaks the rules again). The Padres have some players who will fill needs for contenders at the deadline. If the Padres are where the value is teams absolutely WILL make that trade. The alternative is to trade for a lesser player, trade better prospects for a player who isn’t really an improvement or fail to make necessary upgrades, none of which will happen.
And Norris does indeed prove my point. If no one wanted to trade with Preller he wouldn’t have been able to trade Norris just like the Nats weren’t.

Teams assests don’t work like how money does. If 20% of the league doesnt wannt to trade with Preller thats kind of a moot point if its the angels, orioles, diamondbacks, tigers royals are the 20% concerned. No farm system.

Also, the only concern teams have had with the Padres has come from pitching. So while Preller may receive less for Cahill Richard mauer hand buchter etc. that has no bearing on position players like Solarte, Aybar, Schimpf, etc.

Teams know that the Padres have to report accurate medicals now and the alternative to paying up for one of those guys is to not fill a need in advance of they playoffs, which teams simply aren’t going to do. The suspension won’t affect Preller’s ability to make trades in any way, shape or form.

Yup, crickets. People won’t credit these moves because they don’t involve big names but a trade is a trade. It involves one GM getting on the phone calling another to communicate and swap assets, if he was hated so much by the other GM’s nobody would answer.

i remember a cubs fan saying he would bring in players for the pipeline lol

      That was me.

He brought in a reliever for the pipeline.

Hancock was the best player offered. It’s how DFAs work.

Hancock was decent in Double-A before an injury in 2016. Probably nothing, but it beats the $25 K waiver fee.

As a Padres fan I like this. Still not terribly old, and better than jankowski or Blash right now.

Quakenbush is awful. He will never be offered arbitration.

Matt is a good guy. Hope he succeeds. He donated bone marrow to a kid in Ukraine I believe.

I remember when there was talk of the Tigers being interested in him in spring training, and the Cubs fans wanted Justin Wilson for him, along with a prospect or two. Enjoy a taste of reality.

Many teams over-value their own team’s talent. It’s often called familiarity bias.

Usually cub fans come here and tell us how great of move Theo made with every deal he makes. But cub fans aren’t too mouthy right now.

Meh, he was a fan favorite, but nothing more than a 6th outfielder blocking top prospects. Justin hancock > $25,000. Now we will ride out LaStella before bringing up Happ or Candelario for the stretch run.

Blash hitting .111 and is late to the fastball except in spring training. Jankowski is hurt and not hitting. Looks out of place in LF. Dickerson has bulging disc. Welcome Matt!

Spangly just hit HR! All he does is hit! Put him in LF and give him a chance. New guy from Cubs can platoon/pinch hit.

His hamstrings are surprisingly holding up so far, so hopefully he can stay healthy. Now they can put this guy in the OF with him and finally put the all the Blash nonsense to bed.

Yeah this guy will sell his World Series Ring and get a nice house in La Jolla, not Coronado, no chance.

He won’t get an outhouse in La Jolla for $90-100k a WS ring is worth.

Little underrated I feel like. Wish the giants would’ve made a trade considering what the padres gave up. Seeing the dumpster fire in LF that is Eduardo Nunez is not pretty

Is Hancock going to magically transform into an ace or closer now?
