Twins Designate Danny Santana

By Jeff Todd | May 5, 2017 at 3:52pm CDT

The Twins have designated infielder/outfielder Danny Santana for assignment, as Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com was among those to report on Twitter. His roster spot was needed with utilityman Ehire Adrianza and righty Drew Rucinski headed onto the active roster. (The former was on the DL; the latter had his contract selected.)

Santana, 26, broke into the league with a stunning 2014 season in which he slashed .319/.353/.472 with seven home runs and twenty steals. But he also went down on strikes 98 times while drawing 19 walks, portending some difficulty maintaining that level of production.

As it turned out, Santana has fallen flat offensively ever since. It was much the same this year, as his playing time dwindled. All told, Santana has posted an anemic .225/.258/.310 batting line since the start of 2015. And though he has played up the middle in the infield and outfield, Santana hasn’t rated well at shortstop or in center.

19 BB’s in his last 551 PA’s, if he can’t hit it he shouldn’t swing at it

Heh, small world. I actually know two of Rucinski’s cousins, used to be pretty close friends with them.

Guy is still better than Buxton. Never understood the hype around him. Only tool he ever had was speed

On what planet is he better than Buxton? Buxton provides elite defense. Santana provides mediocre defense at best. Santana’s not a good pinch runner, gets cs too much. His arm is the only good thing.

Buxton has had a very rough career so far, I definitely don’t deny that, but Buxton’s elite defense alone is better than anything Santana can do.

Since 2015, they have close to the same amount of plate appearances. Buxton beats him in HR’s, runs, RBI, walk percentage and ISO. fWAR puts Buxton at 1.5 since 2015. Santana is at negative 2.1.

If you do an search for players with 550 PA since 2015, you’ll come up with a list of 296 players. Santana is the 293rd worst player on that list out of 296!
