Padres Sign Colten Brewer, Designate Kyle Lloyd

By Jeff Todd | November 22, 2017 at 12:07pm CDT

The Padres have announced the signing of righty Colten Brewer to a MLB contract. To clear a 40-man spot, the organization designated fellow right-hander Kyle Lloyd for assignment.

Brewer, 25, was a minor-league free agent from the Yankees system. He struggled last year in his first attempt at Triple-A, coughing up 13 earned runs on 17 hits in ten innings. But Brewer compiled 41 1/3 innings of 1.31 ERA ball, with 9.4 K/9 against 2.4 BB/9, at the penultimate level of the minors.

As for Lloyd, he made his first MLB start in 2017 but otherwise spent the year in the upper minors. Through 147 1/3 innings, Lloyd worked to a 5.01 ERA with 8.9 K/9 and 3.1 BB/9.

Who would have guessed that on the day before Thanksgiving the only free agents signed to Major League deals were two AAA relief pitchers

He wasn’t a free agent because he did not opt out before signing

No harm, no foul. Lloyd isn’t a ML pitcher, by any stretch

      He wasnt bad
He was effective and would be a better relief option vs starter

He wasn’t good. He has no velocity. He will be resigned on a minor league deal and sent back to AAA to be an organizatoinal player

Not sure if it’s this site or the Padres official site but the Padres had 37/40 roster spots filled prior to adding Castillo and Weick making 39/40. Then they dropped Kyle Llyod for Brewer, so it should still be 39/40 but on the press release of the Brewer signing/ Llyod DFA, it says the Padres now have a full 40 man roster.

Anyways, anybody have more info on Brewer? All the info on him is kinda vague.. Seems like he could be a diamond in the rough? Or could turn out like Cesar Vargas, another Yankee farm hand give a ML deal by the Padres without having ML expire nice prior.

Trenton manager Bobby Mitchell’s take: “This guy shouldn’t be off the radar because he can pitch and he’s got nasty stuff. When he’s throwing strikes with his curveball and nasty cutter, he’s tough to hit for anybody, and that’s what he’s been doing. He’s a big guy. He’s got down angle on his cutter. He’s got a good curveball. He throws 95 with movement. He’s just working on command issues a little bit. For me, he can definitely be a big-league pitcher.”

Pads roster was at 38 before the additions of Castillo and Weick. Its at full capacity now.

I saw him pitch several times against Bowie this season and against the Stone Crabs and Ft Myers Miracle early this season and several times last season.

Brewer is strictly a 2 pitch reliever, FB with sink and a curveball. Sits 92-93 out of a 3/4 slot, but can hump up to 96 with late movement. His curveball is a work in progress, he is very inconsistent with it, but may eventually be a plus pitch. He is a groundball pitcher because of late sink on his fastball. In the 7 games that I saw him pitch, all 7 of his strikeouts were on fastballs. If I had to put scouting scale numbers on his pitches I would say 55 and 40. Good enough to get him to the show, but not good enough for him to do more than be a middle reliever. He neither throws especially hard nor has a secondary pitch that is an out pitch. He was not a top prospect in the Yankees organization and won’t be in the Padres organization either.

No idea why my comment went to moderation over a day ago, or why it hasnt shown up yet. It contained nothing inappropriate. Im being reminded why I gave up on the mlbtr comment section a long time ago.
