AL East Notes: Wright, Rays, Jays

By Jeff Todd | December 22, 2017 at 6:44pm CDT

The domestic assault case against Red Sox righty Steven Wright has been “retired,” as Jason Mastrodonato of the Boston Herald reported yesterday. That puts him on track to resolution of the possible legal trouble that arose out of a domestic incident earlier this month. That does not mean that Major League Baseball cannot continue to investigate the matter and decide for itself whether to issue discipline under the MLB-MLBPA Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, and Child Abuse Policy. Indeed, the commissioner’s office says  it is continuing to look into the incident, though of course there’s no indication at this point whether there will be any punishment forthcoming.

Here’s more from the AL East:

  • With former star Evan Longoria now playing elsewhere, the Rays face some interesting questions entering the new year. As Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports, there are loads of infield possibilities on hand even absent Longoria, particularly since the trade brought back another young possibility in Christian Arroyo. Several of those players could end up on the move, in theory, along with quite a few others. Topkin says not to expect pure salary-dumping moves, apart perhaps from the just-acquired Denard Span. Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic further tweets that the Longoria swap isn’t necessarily a prelude to a deal involving top starter Chris Archer, though that still seems plausible.
  • Regardless of how things turn out elsewhere in the division, the Blue Jays plan to enter 2018 with designs on competition, ESPN.com’s Jerry Crasnick writes. That likely means the team isn’t going to seriously consider dealing star third baseman Josh Donaldson, despite persistent chatter about outside interest. GM Ross Atkins tells Crasnick both that the Jays are “trying to win” and that he “can’t imagine our team being better without Josh Donaldson.”

For a second, I read it really quickly, and thought it said “Steven Wright has retire”.

I would love to learn about the back story for how John Henry massaged law enforcement to get him off the hook. Wright was on the hook a lot last year.

That gonna be the same book they publish how yankees ownership convinced everyone involved to not cooperate in the chapman investigation as to get chapman only 30 games for his actions after they traded for him giving up nothing of value?

Cant wait to read that story!

The Yankees would have loved for chapman to have had a longer suspension because it would have kept him from reaching 6 years service time. He barely cleared 6 with the 30 game suspension

This shows you just how much you know about the legal system. It’s not like TV. People don’t get to buy their way out. It’s about the examination of evidence, the Rule of Law and due process.

really cause the cubs, cards, angels, yanks, Astros, have all made moves either in a trade or free agency. teams that were good before.

waiting gets you the bottom of the scrap heap.

but it’s also the whole point. I don’t believe this team truly believes they can compete so they won’t go high end fishing but will spend money late on leftovers to show “we are trying to improve” and “he was #1” on our shopping list all along.

Or you could end up signing guys like Encarnacion significantly undervalue. You’d think Jays fans would understand this after jumping the gun on Morales last year. It’s very plausible that guys like Arrieta or Martinez overplay their hand and need to take a more realistic and team friendly contract than originally thought.

no stupidity in your front office does that, don’t confuse the two.

plus that was mid November. it’s now mid to late December. for a team claiming they will compete, they’ve done absolutely nothing.

They’re doing a fine job. AA didn’t leave them with much in the way of prospects or salary space. The farm is now borderline top 10 and the team has plenty of young, desirable assets. If he builds a team like he did in Cleveland, I’ll be thrilled.

that required years of poor seasons. I agree I don’t mind that route but this isn’t Cleveland. money is there to spend. What doesn’t make sense is we want to compete this year. but we haven’t offered donaldson an extension and we are looking at JD and Lorenzo who would require minimum 4 years.

          the logic is not there.

Yikes. Cleveland only got a sniff of the playoffs twice during Shapiro’s tenure, never won anything and 14 years until a world series appearance.

Are you kidding me? AA got within one game of the world series and it only took him 5 years.

They are not doing a fine job.

Brian Cashman speeded up the Yankees rebuild by years by trading controllable pieces away for premium ready talent which is exactly what the Jays need to do but Shapiro and Atkins are either unwilling, or unable or incompetent to do so. And Cashman kept the yankees in the playoffs all but a few years. This is going to be at least a 5 year no playoff cycle for the Jays under Shapiro/Atkins.

Why do the Jays need to offer an extension to Donaldson to show they want to compete in 2018? They already have him for 2018, what does it matter?

I never said Extend him for 2018. this front office reportedly is on Martinez, Cain who you think are taking 1/2 year offers? would be easier to sell a free agent who wants 4 years or more that you plan to remain competitive if you try and extend your best player.

this front office however has built this team for teardown after 2018 though with several notable players facing FA. it doesn’t add up and I’m guessing many players and agents see it too.

They are going to trade Donaldson, then they aren’t going to trade him. Then tomorrow there will probably be more chatter about a trade is possible and then the next day they decide they’re not going to trade him. Oh well, that’s what makes the offseason not only fun, but sometimes frustrating as well for every fan of their team.

They’ve actually been pretty steadfast in denying that they have any interest in moving Donaldson. People have argued that they should, but Shapiro and Atkins have never given any real indication that they would

no but Shapiro even said if it wasn’t for the fans they would have started a rebuild already. that’s basically saying we aren’t good enough.

plus with donaldson they should either trade him or extend him. you either want the guy or you dont but don’t play this we do until the value is gone, then we don’t card.

true if he does you don’t sign him but have you read a single report that they have approached and talked extension. NO because it hasn’t happened.

if you want to believe the two faces in the front office go ahead but knowledgeable people know this group is lying to it’s fan base aboit wanting to be competitive and is simply looking for an excuse to rebuild in its own vision.

Jays finally have got the fans back in the seats
Going to rebuild mode will not fly in Toronto there just mending the ship till the vlad and Bo make the show
And Donaldson will bring a higher return in July
They can preach about being competitive all day but that’s it there a competitive team as there are now and with all the bad contracts and the age of the team there is not really anything that will help in free agency
All jays need is time maybe a desperate team to take a SS of there hands

        • jimmertee

Mending the ship? That is sinking? The basbeall Titanic?

There is much in free agency that can help the Jays now, common.

When a leader like Atkins or Shapiro says they are trying to win then does nothing to fill the holes, who won’t even acknowledge the holes, then there is something fishy in the waters. It could be stupidity, incompetence or intentionally lying to the fans.

Time won’t fix this with their methods of slowly rebuilding the farm. Cashman didn’t put up with this for long and traded away controllable pieces for elite ready talent. That is not being done in Toronto.

This is going to be another 5 years at this rate. Remember the Cleveland Indians, they didn’t see playoffs from Shapiro’s building efforts until 6 years after he took over, they never won, and it took another 8 years after that to go deep into the playoffs plus it took another regime to clean up Shapiro’s mess of Bourne, Swisher etc etc to get Cleveland into that World Series run.

We are in for along wait for a championship with this leadership team. Minimum another 5 years more likely 10.

And if Rogers sells the team like is being talked about, all bets are off. That could mean another Marlins style fire sale and low budget.

Oh they acknowledge the holes. Shanpkins have said exactly what they need, they’ve said it for years. Depth, speed, youth, athleticism. What have the done to address those needs? Sign Morales. Which box does he check off in their needs? Same for Pearce. That’s the frustrating part, they say they need one thing, then sign the total opposite. They don’t need depth at DH/1B with slow one dimensional bats. Those are a dime a dozen. They need speed and people who can get on base at the top of the lineup for Donaldson and Smoak to drive in. As is, Donaldson may set a record for most solo homeruns in a single season this year.

As I have said before, the holes I am referring too are a true healthy #1, #3, SS, 2nd baseman, 40%catcher, speed/power RF and lefty shutdown releiver.

My guess is they will trade him if someone was to bowl them over with a desirable offer. I can’t see this going anywhere right now though. Maybe twenty or so games into the season as the league starts to shake out and players get injured things might be a whole different story.

The Crasnick article above infers the obvious that the Jays have to have every star lineup, cancer must be cured etc before they can win.

Don’t buy into the Atkins grape kool-aid the the Jays are trying to win. Atkins is either intentionally lying to the fans to sell tickets or he is totally incompetent because he has misread or poorly scouted the Jays current siuation. In either case, either reason for his statement is ground for dismissal. Fire Atkins now. Next GM please.

Crasnick says it best when he poses that “if not all the ifs lineup” then the Jays are delaying the inevitable rebuild [once again].

Yes, many “interesting questions” for the Rays infield, unfortunately no good answers. Matt Duffy is brittle, Arroyo is a weak-hitting third baseman with no power, Brad Miller is Brad Miller…may as well get those young pups up in the bigs this year, but of course this mgmt group likes to keep them on farm one year too long. Sounds like a joke, but this group is so clueless they may bring plouffe back for a year and deem that a legit option.
