The Nationals have acquired utilityman Matt Reynolds from the division-rival Mets, per a club announcement. Cash considerations will go to New York in the agreement for Reynolds, who had been designated for assignment recently.
Reynolds, 27, has struggled in his limited MLB opportunities and was squeezed off of the Mets roster as the team has continued to add infielders. The Nats had an unexpected opening arise recently when young catcher Raudy Read was hit with a PED suspension.
Though he has accomplished little in limited MLB time, Reynolds has shown an ability to line up all around the infield and in the corner outfield. And he has posted a solid (albeit PCL-aided) .289/.348/.419 slash in over a thousand career trips to the plate at Triple-A.
To crack the Nationals’ active roster, Reynolds would likely need to beat out Wilmer Difo for an infield reserve spot. Of course, he could instead be optioned to Triple-A to serve as affordable and versatile depth, or the Nats could attempt to sneak him through waivers at some point.

Well, cross the Nationals off the Boras bullsh*t list of possible landing spots for whoever he is representing these days. That guy tried to ruin baseball and he failed. How cool is that?
No room for him on the Mets bench especially when TJ Rivera returns. Hopefully we don’t regret losing him to a division rival

Not necessarily. Difo is overqualified for the utility job, the Nationals are high on him and he isn’t going anywhere. All else being equal, in a year he will be the Nats 2B. But this year, if Murphy hasn’t recovered by opening day, Difo will start at 2B and Reynolds will be competing for the utility role. Not a game changer by any means but a potentially useful addition.

Clearly, the Nats spiked Read’s gatorade, just to make room for Reynolds.
Reynolds’ minor league numbers were inflated by a very high BABip which explains the ultra-high batting averages in the lower minors. Unfortunately, he just doesn’t hit the ball in the air enough. At least he brings moderate defensive versatility and decent enough speed.

Eh, he was supposed to be an up and comer not that long ago it just never panned out. He’s still young enough that a change of scenery could turn him around. As stated, he’s a super utility guy, not the worst player to have around come July and August when injuries pile up and guys need rest.
