Athletics Acquire Wilmer Font

By Jeff Todd | April 25, 2018 at 3:29pm CDT

The Athletics have acquired righty Wilmer Font from the Dodgers, per a club announcement. Lefty Logan Salow will head to Los Angeles in return.

Font is out of options, so he’ll need to be added to the active roster by the A’s. He cracked the Dodgers pen to open the 2018 season but was knocked around early. Thus far in 2018, opponents have scored 13 earned runs and cracked five home runs in Font’s 10 1/3 innings of work.

That said, Font is an interesting player to take a risk on. He was lights out as a starter last year at Triple-A, carrying a 3.42 ERA with 11.9 K/9 against 2.3 BB/9. The A’s will hope that Font can rediscover the form that produced those results and convert it into MLB production.

Salow was a sixth-round pick in last year’s draft who showed some swing and miss, but also some command struggles, in his first two dozen innings as a professional. The southpaw has shown well out of the gates at the Class A level in 2018, allowing just one earned run on one hit and two walks while compiling eight strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings.

A guy who was a 6th round pick just last year. Not a bad return for the Dodgers

A 23 year old loogy at A ball, its not any kind of a “return” its two extremely flawed players who might have extremely small MLB careers.

Usually players of this caliber just get dealt for a little bit of cash or dumped for nothing though so this seems solid to me

He doesn’t have to amount to anything. Font was not going to come back to the Dodgers and DFA guys usually bring nothing back.

He’s not a LOOGY as he faced far more RHB than LHB over his career,,,,,
        .167/.286/.208 against LHB
        .183/.323/.267 against RHB
Quite frankly it’s odd that the A’s gave up Salow for Font. Font looked good in ST but has been trash since then.

Doesn’t look like a loogy. He’s pitched multiple innings before. Still not big due to full time relief in Single-A at 23, promote him to the Cal League and see how he does before evaluating.

The Truth someone doesn’t know is that the A’s started to save money to sign senior starting from 6th round

I’m pretty sure at this point the Dodgers have Billy Beane on speed dial

I’m pretty sure they have a direct line to every team. Call it a hunch, but I’d say the other 29 teams have the same setup. Nevertheless, this appears to look like a decent swap for both teams. Check back in about 5 years for a review.

If it’s not Chris Hatcher DFA’d then this is horrible for an up and coming team that’s winning games.

I think the fact that Logan Salow saw his name on MLB Trade Rumors is enough.

The way things are going for the Dodgers this year, Font will start mowing them down for Oakland and Salow’s career will end in Tulsa.
