David Hale Elects Free Agency

By Jeff Todd | May 18, 2018 at 9:38pm CDT

Righty David Hale has elected free agency after clearing outright waivers, the Yankees announced today. He had recently been designated for assignment.

Roster churn is nothing new for Hale, who has had multiple stints in New York and one with the Twins this year, in addition to the time he has spent at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The 30-year-old has allowed 15 earned runs in his 22 2/3 innings at all stops on the year.

This is the most extensive action that Hale has seen at the game’s highest level since the 2015 season. All told, he carries a 4.58 ERA with 6.1 K/9 against 3.2 BB/9 over 186 2/3 MLB innings.

Because Yankees have more pitching depth then most teams and he can probably find more opportunity on a non contender.

But wouldn’t the fact that he re-signed with the Yankees (and got back to the Majors) after the Twins cut him suggest that his best bet for making it back to the bigs is sticking with the Yankees and hoping that they need a spot in the future? No one else tried to sign him when the Twins cut him, right?

Ya, but if no one signs him he can just re-sign with the Yanks if they want him. He’s basically turning down a minor league paycheck and that’s not much. No harm no foul.

The Yankees have Warren and Kahnle coming back soon, that means Hale’s chance of staying and getting another call up is slim to none. Better chance to be a garbage time innings eater somewhere else

It’d be nice to receive some credit. I tweeted this out 38 minutes before the Yanks last night. (I’m @AndersenPickard)

Also, who cares who broke it first ? Do you get paid for doing this ? If not, it’s irrelevant !
