Rays Acquire Wilmer Font

By Jeff Todd | May 25, 2018 at 5:13pm CDT

The Rays have announced the acquisition of righty Wilmer Font from the Athletics. Minor-league righty Peter Bayer will go to Oakland in return.

Font had recently been designated for assignment by the A’s. His stop there hasn’t been any better than his opening to the season was with the Dodgers. In 17 innings this year, Font has allowed 24 earned runs on 31 hits.

Optimists will note that Font has managed 16 strikeouts to go with just five walks on the year. Those figures line up more with Font’s promising showing at Triple-A last year, when he worked to 3.42 ERA in 134 1/3 innings with 11.9 K/9 and 2.3 BB/9.

Ultimately, it’s tough to look past the fact that opposing hitters have somehow managed to drive the ball out of the park a dozen times in Font’s first 24 MLB innings. But the Rays certainly have a need for arms and don’t mind taking the risk, so they’ll see if they can get the 28-year-old on track.

Since no one shows up anyways they might as well throw everything at the wall and see what sticks.

With this and the other trade today, the Rays FO is showing its among the dumbest in the game now….how the mighty have fallen.

Also it really stinks the Yankees, Red Sox and Jays all get to feast off two teams that run so badly for like 40 games a year – balance this schedule already, MLB!!!

If they go to 32 teams they can re-align based on location and have 4 divisions of 8 like hockey.

And before that happens, the Rays and A’s need new stadiums. MLB should set a date for both teams to find a new stadium site, and then fine them every day they go over to force the issue. This is taking far too long.

I think you’re overestimating how much control the team has over it

Simpler: if they expand the season to 168 games each team can play 6 home and 6 away games against every other team in the league. Do away with interleague because it sucks and isn’t interesting anymore.

Yeah, I’m sure that players are going to love giving them more games to play in.

          Less games, not more.

Less postseason – won’t be necessary because the balanced schedule will ensure the records won’t be tainted by beating up on the tanking teams within the same division. Go back to 2 per league, no more WC bs.

This is possibly the dumbest idea I’ve ever heard. More regular season and less postseason? Yikes….

Even when the Jays were good they still got dominated by the Rays. Now it’s just a two team division now that the O’s suck and the Jays are mediocre
