Mets Expect Lengthy Absence For AJ Ramos

By Jeff Todd | June 12, 2018 at 12:41pm CDT

When he hit the DL with a shoulder injury about two weeks ago, it was not really clear how long Mets reliever AJ Ramos would miss. GM Sandy Alderson said today, though, that the righty is expected to sidelined for a significant stretch, as Tim Britton of The Athletic was among those to tweet.

Alderson revealed that Ramos is weighing a surgical route, in fact, though the precise nature of the underlying injury remains unclear. The alternative would be a rehab course that will also require further downtime.

“We certainly don’t expect him back anytime soon,” Alderson said. Though we still don’t know even loose potential timelines, it seems fair to read that as an indication that the Mets will go without one of their most experienced late-inning arms for the foreseeable future.

Of course, the 31-year-old Ramos had not been at his best in 2018. Acquired last summer even as the Mets sold off veterans, and then signed to a $9.225MM salary in his final year of arbitration, Ramos was seen as a key piece of the pen this year. Through 19 2/3 innings, though, he’s carrying a 6.41 ERA with 10.1 K/9 and 6.9 BB/9.

Control problems are nothing new for Ramos, who has 99 career saves but also a lifetime average of 4.9 walks per nine innings. With free agency beckoning at season’s end, though, it was all the more important that he demonstrate he could keep the free passes in check. As things stand, Ramos will have quite a lot to prove if and when he’s able to return later in the season.

You mean you haven’t said, “If only we had AJ Ramos for this inning”?

      Again…..

With all the stats, medical advances, training methods, etc. – one cannot come to this website any day of the season and not see multiple players going down with injuries. Add in the screwy 10-day disabled list so that players can be called up from AAA and AA to give them a rest, the endless trades and waiver claims along with the daily trade rumors….how can a fan that does not treat this as anything less then a full-time job keep up with his/her team?

When will the owners figure out that the yuppie front office people they have entrusted their sport to have stripped its skill level, and are quickly turning it into whiffleball – hit the ball here it’s a single, here it’s a double., etc. They are now paying pitchers $15-17 million a year to pitch under 80 innings a year…..and even those players are getting hurt!

MLB is in a bubble. In time all economic bubbles burst. While this may be fascinating for those playing fantasy sports, it is a becoming a flawed product. Consumers want to eat sausage, they do not want to see it made. They want to use computers, they do not want to see the code.

Next up – starting pitchers that pitch 3-5 innings a start, being paid $20-35 million a year on a long-term contract…..and next to none of them will even make 80% of their starts due to injury, fatigue, and exhaustion.

I forgot the Mets got AJ Ramos lol. I was going to say at least they didn’t give up anything for him but looks like 1 of the players involved has pitched a few games for the Marlins this year already.

With all the guys on the DL, Topps should print an “8th” series of cards with all the players brought up to replace the injured.

That’s a great idea MYRS. I’m in the licensing business with friends at MLB HQ. I received the green light to find a sponsor and with a couple of calls we’ve got an agreement in place!

Series 8 will be called, “MLB DL-Real and Imagined Time Off” sponsored by the NY Mets.

Having the endorsement of the unquestioned leader in this category could NOT have happened without amazing fast work by a key executive. With Sandy Alderstein our to lunch (he has been the past 3-4 seasons anyway) I approached Cracker Jack “TC” who bought into the idea immediately. When he went over the PDF of the final agreement, TC wrote on the cover email, “This feels great since I’m personally responsible for blowing out all of the past few years’ staff arms.”

it’s ok… the Mets will resign him in the off-season for a bargain 4 mil anyway, 2 year contract, that’ll see him once again be on the DL (PER THE MO OF THIS TEAM) in April next year only to not return till late August of 2019. Why? Because that’s what they do. Instead of improve, they resign has-beens. So… Wilpons, good job on the for seeable future. Cause God knows… Sandy is nothing more than the scapegoat as every other GM has been since your inception of ownership to this team. Maybe one day, this team can regain it’s fire and fun atmosphere and competitive nature… but not while these idiots are running the show.

Has anyone stopped to realize how little the Wilson’s are actually paying in salaries considering everyone is injured and getting most of their salary from insurance
