Adam Lind Opts Out Of Red Sox Contract

By Jeff Todd | August 1, 2018 at 2:00pm CDT

The Red Sox have released first baseman Adam Lind after he opted out of his contract with the organization, per a club announcement (h/t Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic, on Twitter). He’ll again head onto the open market in search of another opportunity.

It came as a surprise when Lind wasn’t able to find a big-league job entering the season. After all, despite his limitations in the field and against left-handed pitching, he destroyed right-handed pitching last year. In his 238 plate appearances with the platoon advantage in 2017, Lind posted a .303/.364/.534 slash with 14 home runs.

It’s possible that some contenders will like the idea of stashing Lind’s bat for consideration as a September bench piece, while second-division clubs in need of veteran gap-fillers might consider him as well. At this point, though, Lind will surely need to show more in the upper minors before he’s able to command a big league roster spot. In 189 plate appearances thus far at Triple-A Pawtucket, he carries only a .216/.270/.398 slash with eight home runs.

Somebody give this guy a chance.

He may be not hitting in Triple-A Pawtucket, but the Yankees signed him to a minor league deal earlier this season:

Lind slashed: 302/.362/.477 and 3 HR, 14 RBI, for NYY Triple-A

xabial…..You’re combining AAA and A+. At AAA Scranton he slashed .241/.302/.414 w/2 HR in 16 games and at Tampa in the Florida State League he slashed .429/.484/.607 w/1 HR in 8 games.

Thank you! I didn’t know I did that on aggregate. My point still stands. His next minor league deal will be his 4th one. Unacceptable, for anyone who posted a .303/.364/.534 slash with 14 HR in 2017… even as a Platoon-DH!

xabial…….I look at it this way. 2017 was 2017. He is now 35 and limited to 1B/DH which is exactly what he has done in MiLB this year and his splits are almost identical. (with the exception of PA and OBP)…vs. RHP .245/.313/.426 in 208 PA vs. LHP .246/.267/.420. That just doesn’t scream MLB…that scream a dime a dozen.

Before I even read the comments, that was my first thought. Someone has to pick him up. Looking across the American league, the first basemen are subpar. The Yankees couldn’t have used him as their first baseman and improve the team? Regardless, this guy should be in the Majors.

Thank you for his the NYY stats. I’m still surprised Seattle hasn’t given him a chance (again).

As a Yankee minor leaguer, he likely faced Pawtucket often and we know the current state of the Sox system. If Boston wasn’t willing to call him up in September, he likely has few options left for this year. Even though he hits from the opposite side, the Sox getting Pierce ended his chance of an injury to Moreland call up. With Kinsler now on the team, he likely realized if Moreland became a no go, Sweihart and Holt are lefty options for first.

Pirates just put Bell on the DL.. Might be worth it for a 2 week audition, depending on who they would DFA.

PNC has got to be his best option with short RF.. wanted him back when he was good.

Who would start at 1B during a crucial wildcard game tho?

Remember how well that worked out against the Cubs, when we desperately needed offense and had Pedro and Aramis on the bench, but started SRod there for his amazing D at 1B….

Remember, hurdle and huntington know best and should never, ever be fired.
Huntington is so smart. It all makes sense now why he traded Cole for absolutely nothing.. He knew he could land Archer, and all he had to give up was his #1 prospect.

          In Huntington we Trust!!!!

Take a shot, Mo. The Cards could use a left-handed bench bat.

Lind should never retire. He should continue to sign minor league deals forever.

Wouldn’t be shocked if the Braves give him a shot. AA mentioned on the broadcast last night that they went after a left handed bat late yesterday and it didn’t work out.

I wouldn’t mind having him on the Braves, except he really has nowhere to play. he’s far from a star, but solid

Some contending team will call him up in September when rosters expand as a left handed pinch hitter. He needs to keep working in AAA until then.
