Cubs Non-Tender Ronald Torreyes

By Jeff Todd | November 30, 2018 at 7:15pm CDT

The Cubs have non-tendered recently acquired infielder Ronald Torreyes, per a club announcement. Also non-tendered were non-arb-eligible players Justin Hancock and Allen Webster.

It’s not entirely clear why the Cubs decided to pick up Torreyes days ago, only to set him free. It could be, though, that the club wanted the added insurance while deciding what to do with Addison Russell, who was tendered earlier today. And several other teams have done the same with certain players, so it’s hardly a one-off situation. It seems clear the utilityman could end up in the Chicago organization, though perhaps only if he is willing to sign a minors deal.

Yay. Calling Ninja Cash… Please re-sign Torreyes. Also, do the Yankees still keep PTBNL they recieved for Torreyes?

Still see him on someone’s 40. Bat is nice for a 25th man and he has infield versatility.

They planned it during the recent GM meetings. Just like last year when they decided to sign only relievers during December.. When Mueller’s done with Trump, I think Clark should give him a call.

Not necessarily. I think they felt Toe offered more than tommy at this point (and also gave tommy a chance to double his playing time somewhere else).

Now I think they see someone else that is a free agent that they think they can get and offers more than Toe.

Like PickleRiccck said, they were not part of the same trade.

Torryes was designated by the Yankees and then traded to the Cubs. La Stella was acquired by the Angels for a PTBNL.

These moves don’t occur in a vacuum. Maybe Theo thought he had something going and was working with that in mind. It didn’t pan out….game plan changed.
We’re not talking HOFers here….no Refsnyder. Most of these guys are 25th on a 25 man roster. Not to say there aren’t some quality out there; every year there is. But they’re few and far between.

It was insurance Incase they didn’t tender Russell, which they did, so Torres isn’t worth a ML contract. If no one else signs him, perhaps he’ll sign a minor league deal.

How bout greinke and Goldschmidt in left for heyward, chatwood, almora and schwarber and mid-level prospects?!? Don’t need to overpay for Harper and you can still go after Machado for the infield and move Bryant to right. Let happ play everyday center and develop. You can even go get light hitting Hamilton as a 4th of or starter if you have to include Happ.
