Orioles Designate Engelb Vielma

By Jeff Todd | November 20, 2018 at 6:08pm CDT

The Orioles have designated infielder Engelb Vielma for assignment today, per a club announcement. His spot was needed for the team to settle its 40-man roster in advance of today’s deadline to protect players from the Rule 5 draft.

Vielma missed much of the 2018 season with an unfortunate knee injury, preventing him from a potential MLB showcase in Baltimore. On the positive side, he did record his first major-league hit in a brief stint with the O’s. He had landed with the O’s last winter after bouncing around the waiver wire.

While the 24-year-old Vielma doesn’t have much of a track record in the minors with the bat, he’s known as an excellent and versatile defender. So long as he’s back to full health, he should generate plenty of interest from teams that value infield utility depth.

Wasn’t this the main guy going to Baltimore in the Machado trade with the Dodgers?

Lol I thought hes was part of it, not main that was Diaz/Banon/Pop/Kremer, a throw in utility infielder by the name of Breyvic Valera was the 5th element of that trade, I though Breyvic and Engelb were the same person.

I believe your thinking of Bryvic Valera but it was Yunisel Diaz that was the main piece.

*Yunsiel Diaz. Power corner outfielder. Not sure how you confuse the two?

Vielma was on these pages a lot last year, but only because he was one of those guys who got put on waivers and claimed a bunch of times by a bunch of teams over a few months. Between Sept. 2017 and Jan. 2018 he was claimed on waivers four times (Twins to Giants, Giants to Phillies, Phillies to Pirates, Pirates back to Giants). Then 8 days after the Giants claimed him for the 2nd time, he got traded to the Orioles for… nobody: it was for a PTBNL, but because he got hurt and missed the year, apparently the Giants decided not to ask for anyone in return. If you look up that trade on Vielma’s bbref.com page, it actually reads traded by Giants to the Orioles for NULL (as in null set, not some guy named Null).
