Mets Sign Rajai Davis

By Jeff Todd | December 17, 2018 at 4:23pm CDT

The Mets announced today that they have inked a minor-league deal with veteran outfielder Rajai Davis. He’ll receive an invitation to Spring Training.

The 38-year-old Davis has played in the big leagues for each of the past 13 seasons. He’s known best for his quality glovework and game-changing speed, with 415 career stolen bases in just over fourteen-hundred total games.

Given those other carrying skills, Davis has carried a respectable-enough .262/.311/.379 slash for his career, which translates to an 86 wRC+. Unfortunately, he has dipped beneath that average in each of the past three seasons. In 2018, Davis managed only a .224/.278/.281 batting line.

With his work at the plate lagging, Davis received only 216 plate appearances last year — his lowest tally since he got his first, brief taste of the bigs in 2006. Still, the Indians found a way to get him into 101 games, which speaks to the other ways he can still contribute.

No doubt Davis had interest from other organizations, many of which surely would have seen him as among the more appealing depth options available without the commitment of a 40-man roster spot. That the Mets landed him seemingly indicates that the veteran sees a real chance to earn MLB time in New York if he shows well in camp. Of course, the expectation remains that other moves will still impact the Mets’ outfield picture.

They’re planning on it. So wagon wheel screamed to Mutt and Jeff,
“It’s going to be a real cheap deal”. They didn’t know who it was. Kind of like a grab bag at a party.

He is going to delight Senior with more of these cheap moves.

          Roster dilution at its finest.

Actually, it’s probably bc he is guaranteed playing time early in the season with Cespedes out, he can split time with Lagares and be a def sub. If he proves he is still up to it he’s a valuable bench piece or he moves to a contender mid season.

Now with a Catcher that can hit, the Mets can play him in CF a good portion of the time.

He may well be the best defensive CF in MLB.

And no team is taking on that contract, unless the Mets trade him even up for a bad contract player with no redeeming qualities.

Why wouldn’t a team take on a 4th outfielder signed for one year/9.5 mil contract? That’s lower than most players final year of arbitration.

I don’t think the average fan that follows MLB via the media, realizes just how awful the Phillies are. They finished near last in the NL in just about every offensive category, in spite of playing their home games on a Little League field. Their pitching has 2 very good starters, the rest of the staff as a group grades out below average. Their defense has been upgraded from below-mediocre to bad. Their GM is terrible, and they may well have the worst manager in MLB – even below Boone.

Don’t care who else they sign – the Phillies are not going to be terrific in 2019.

Ok, U just slammed the Phils for a few holes and can understand that, but just what positives do the mets have, other than a rotation and 2 closers and 1 of them being a spouse beater?

There is nothing sthat stands out among the offense with cespedes injured, the defense isn’t all that hot either. I see a rotation in search of a team.

Wow, talk about a delusional mutts fan.

The phillies offense was terrible because they had bad numbers in “a little league park”

Wouldn’t that same logic mean their pitching was much better than the numbers said? Cant have it both ways loser.

The Phillies have added Segura and McCutchen and are far from finished.

But I’m sure whoever they bring in will suck simply because they’re on philly, facts be dammed!

Then an out of no where shot at Boone at the end, what a bitter mutts fan.

At least Boone can make out a line up card.

wow that seems abit intense for his comment, He did cite facts and keep it to baseball.

Anyway for what its worth the philles defense was awful last year but I do feel they have made positive strides in that regard. Arrieta and other starters possibly regressing could be an issue though. Still a young up and coming team but with much to prove.

I also like the Davis signing for the mets, its very low impact but it shows the FO might take more of a interest in defense and speed which is good considering the stadium and rotation.

Not a Mets fan, but given Baseball today, and of course the playoff structure, I think they have as good a chance of sneaking in to a WildCard as many other teams.
Also, and most importantly, having a rotation and the semblance of a relief corps, is better than having a team in search of a rotation. Most teams they will compete with are desperate for rotation help.
As usual JohnSilver worships the ground the Red Sox walk on….anything NY is bad….including the Mets!

I like this guy, and I really hope this is all we do for OF signings. Lagares is a fine CF and will hold down the fort until Cespedes comes back. We don’t need to splurge on AJ Pollock. Spend that money on more bullpen guys

Mets still need an impact bat. They got Cano and Ramos which is fine and all but adding a superstar would put them over the top, especially if Harper/JT/Machado end up with the Braves or the Phillies
