The Reds announced today that they have signed lefty reliever Ian Krol to a minors pact. He’ll receive an invitation to participate in MLB Spring Training as a non-roster player.
Krol, 27, had thrown 188 MLB innings over five seasons heading into the 2018 campaign, pitching to a 4.50 ERA with 8.4 K/9 and 3.5 BB/9. He didn’t receive much of a shot last year, however, ultimately making just one appearance in the majors with the Angels. Krol did work to a 2.72 ERA with 9.4 K/9 and 4.2 BB/9 in 56 1/3 Triple-A frames, split between the Halos and Mets organizations.
Needless to say, Krol will not enter camp as a favorite to secure a big league job this spring, but he will have a chance to show what he can do. Amir Garrett is locked in, but there’s otherwise a fair bit of uncertainty on the left-handed side of the Cincinnati relief corps. Wandy Peralta and Brandon Finnegan each struggled badly last year. Cody Reed showed some promise in a brief stretch as a reliever but could be stretched out as a starter, perhaps leaving the door open for Krol or fellow minor-league signee Buddy Boshers to snag an opportunity with an impressive effort in camp.

Ian Krap. Glad he’s no longer a Brave.
realgone2
Same. First game I saw at the new stadium he blew a lead against the Mets. Garbage
oldleftylong
He is not good.

Buddy Boshers has better odds because he’s been better than Krol in his career between the MLB and AAA recently. (Krol was great in 2016)

Local kid! The pride of Nequa Valley High School in Naperville IL! I have a friend who helped train Ian Krol, great guy!
SoupRGyro
“Local kid” would make more sense if the Cubs or White Sox signed him. Nevertheless, best wishes to Ian in Cincy

Why did he get kicked off the team his senior year?
Moneyballer
It was his second Alcohol related violation. He liked to drink, typical teenage antics.

Needless to say, this article did not need a “needless to say.” Come for the baseball rumors; stay for the comically inept writing.

Hey showman, show yourself the door…..

I’m a lawyer by training, so throwaway phrases are my bread and butter.

I see your needless to say, and raise you a joint tortfeasor.

I concur that it is axiomatic that many attorneys (myself included) make unnecessary and/or redundant uses of innumerable phrases, including but not limited to the aforementioned terminology.
(I mean, “I agree.”)

At least the Reds are making moves. There are only 6 legit teams to make the World Series this year, and the top 3 are in the AL.
Woods Rider
In all seriousness, the Reds have been one of the most active teams this off season. It’s making the NL Central shape up to be a very competitive division.
dugdog83
You gotta think either the Cubs or Brewers will have a bad year, I’m thinking Brewers will because as of now haven’t made a big splash. Reds just need to win series outside division and handle their own in the Central and they could be in the mix late in the season. Will be tough tho. I’m just glad to see they aren’t like the other 20 plus teams doing absolutely nothing.
Woods Rider
It would not surprise me to see a division winner out of the NL Central @ 89-90 wins. Those teams are going to beat up on each other. There is no door mat in this division in 2019.
I’m willing to bet that the Brewers, although legit, will most likely take a step back this year while I believe the Cubs could be at the very beginning of their decline.

Letting your own young players develop and play contrary to popular belief is not doing nothing. The league is won with young controllable players.
Trading for a bunch of costly free agent to be players is a good way to win a couple more games and cost yourself the ability to spend money in the draft though, further lengthing the rebuild.
Woods Rider
@Iverbrue that is very true, however, how has it worked out so far for the Reds? They’ve been in 1 p-layoff series in 10 years and virtually dormant for the last 28. They haven’t exactly drafted very well to my knowledge and have traded their quality home grown talent for very little return. It’s a little hard to win with young, controllable players when you draft poorly AND trade away the prospects you got correct.
There was a segment on MLB Radio where Jim Bowden talked about how abysmal attendance has been in recent seasons and how lack of interest in such a storied franchise as the Reds really left the club with no choice but to put a somewhat competitive team on the field.
ekrog
At least some of this is accurate.
yamsi1912
Didn’t even realize he was on the angels for a bit. Good luck ruining another team.

At least the Tigers still have Shane Greene (via Robbie Ray) from that trade. Fister’s career has gone south.
oldleftylong
Shane Greene sucks.

Had a chance to speak to Ian’s Mom and Dad at a Red Sox game a while back. Nice people. I hope he does well.

Ian got screwed by the Angeles and just wasted by the stupid Mets last year. I’m sure he is ready to go and will make the team out of spring training.. I think he is mad and ready to prove he should be in the bigs from here on out!
soxfan4life
I agree Krol worked hard and not given his fair shot by the Halos or Mets. Reds should use him to his full potential! Wish Sox had picked him up!
