Mets Sign Danny Espinosa To Minor League Deal

By Steve Adams | February 8, 2019 at 8:12pm CDT

The Mets announced Friday that they’ve signed infielder Danny Espinosa to a minor league contract and invited him to Major League Spring Training.

Espinosa joins a crowded Mets infield mix that currently includes Jed Lowrie, Todd Frazier, Amed Rosario, Robinson Cano, J.D. Davis and first basemen Dominic Smith and Peter Alonso. He’ll face an uphill battle in cracking the roster because of that depth, particularly considering the struggles Espinosa has endured in recent seasons.

Once a high-quality regular for the Nationals, Espinosa has bounced all over the league since 2016, spending time with the Nats, Angels, Mariners, Rays, Yankees, Blue Jays, Dodgers and Phillies (although not all in the Majors). Last year, in 80 games between the Triple-A affiliates for the Dodgers, Phillies and Jays, he hit a combined .229/.291/.356 in 315 plate appearances. If he doesn’t make the roster out of camp, the switch-hitting Espinosa will presumably head to the Mets’ new Triple-A affiliate in Syracuse and give them some depth in the event of an injury.

The 4 th ex Halo to be signed today. Wonder what his selling point was? I can’t hit but I can grow a better beard than Julian Edelma.

The Mets need to somehow get rid of Frazier,Smith,Lagares and Vargas even if they have to pay 1/2 of the remaining $$ on the contracts.

Mike isn’t one person, he’s a group of 55 using the same log on.

No one person could possibly have so little going on it their lives that they would put the same lame comments in every thread involving a team he didn’t even care about.

          They all take turns.

I like the signing, although he has BA issues and strikes out big time, always thought he could play, if nothing else defense is solid

Again I don’t see TJ Rivera’s name in the crowded extra infielders mix. Isn’t he still on the 40 man roster? He’s a fellow Bronxite!

I don’t think they’re confident in Rivera’s health or his ability to maintain the numbers he put up in ’16/’17. If they did, I find it hard to believe that they would have dealt minor league depth to get Davis. Plus Rivera’s offense doesn’t really outstrip his lack of a position, he’s sort of a poor man’s Flores in that regard.

His career war is pretty decent for how bad of a player he always has been. I just don’t get it.

Regardless, another decent depth move for the Mets. I hate to say it, but they are the team to beat in the east

Rumor has it that Mutt and Jeff want to bring back Jose Reyes for another stint and have told Wagon Wheel to shed some salary space to make room for him. It was a tense convo as “TC” was a vocal instigator and Wagon Wheel questioned, “What is this guy’s role?”

Dude the Mutt and Jeff reference is lost on anyone born after 1970 and Wagon Wheel is overly clever. I bet it catches on
