Orioles Claim Pedro Severino

By Ty Bradley | March 23, 2019 at 12:59pm CDT

Per a team release, the Orioles have claimed catcher Pedro Severino off waivers from the Nationals.  In a corresponding move, the club has designated INF Stevie Wilkerson for assignment.

Severino, 25, hasn’t hit much at the MLB level since debuting late in 2015, slashing just .187/.273/.287 (47 wRC+) in 282 career big-league plate appearances. The rocket-armed catcher hasn’t had much success in his last three AAA stints either, though he did post a career-best .192 ISO in limited action there last season.

He’ll look to insert himself into the murky Baltimore catching mix, where the inexperienced Chance Sisco/Austin Wynns duo has been competing with veteran Jesus Sucre for the bulk of the action at the position.

Wilkerson, 27, sat out much of 2018 with oblique and hamstring troubles, as well as a suspension for amphetamines, but was reasonably productive at the plate, slugging a career-best .500 in 86 plate appearances for Norfolk.

Wynns probably going to get cut. Sisco will start at AAA. I liked Austin but he’s almost 30 and has the best chance of clearing waivers

Most likely Sucre and Severino as his backup. They are both in the top 12 in strongest arms for Carchers. This new F.O is really sticking to its word, analytics wise.

WTF are you talking about. I’m not sure you’ve seen an orioles game this spring with this comment. In all likelihood Sisco is our starter and sucre or possibly Sevy will be back up. With this move I’m inclined to believe it’s sevy since sucre would need a 40 man slot. Wynns has options he’s not getting outrighted off the 40 man. Makes zero sense. He’s also 28, not almost 30. Idk where your pulling that crap out of.

I have watched plenty of Orioles games… including last spring when Sisco hit even better than this year. However, Sucre has an opt-out if he is not on the 40 man that has already been exercised behind the scenes. Severino must be on the MLB team. Sure Sisco should be the starter and make the team, but the front office has already shown that spring stats mean nothing (Hays, Young, Nunez, Diaz, Etc). We still do not know how this front office operates entirely. Wynns turns 29 this year, I’d say that’s almost 30 especially for a catcher who 118 PA’s of big league experience. Instead of calling people “fools” you should try understanding the team and their roster construction decisions.

Nunez is still up. Sucre is 31 and has floated around the big leagues for 5 seasons now. Wynns just
Got his shot. And Has options left. The Severino move essentially waves goodbye to sucre.
Which again shouldn’t matter were trying to improve for the future not add a marginal catcher. Diaz and Hays are service time moves. In addition to the fact that they haven’t played a game in AAA yet. Sisco would need to be down for much longer to manipulate any more service time there and has been playing extremely well this spring. We’re not sending him back for a 3rd crack at AAA. That’s why it makes no sense. And if 28 and 103 days is 30 we’re starting to reach a little bit now. He has plenty of options left and we don’t have a lot of long term options behind the plate. No shot he gets DFA’d to keep a 31 year old journeyman catcher in a rebuilding year.

“knowing the Orioles…”. That’s the problem with you complainers. You DON’T know THESE Orioles, THIS regime. The regime(s) you, and I, have known has left town. Let’s give these guys a chance! Be excited that at least part of the braintrust behind what we see in Houston is now right here in Baltimore! That’s a LOT to be excited about!

Wynns has been hurt for two weeks (lat strain) and has virtually no chance of being active for Opening Day. He’ll either get sent to AAA or get placed on the IL. Severino is just another guy, but he’s a more valuable guy than Wilkerson is considering that the two Rule 5 guys are infielders and both are making the team.

Wilkerson has no pop or speed. He’s an average at best fielder whose best position is 2B. I won’t be surprised if he clear waivers. Anyone who thinks sucre and Sevy will be our 2 catchers on opening day is an absolute fool. It’ll be one of them plus Sisco.

Sucre May opt out, this is insurance. Plus he’s on the 40 now. Depth. And young. Wynns is not getting cut. What a joke txtgab.

Yeah, no shot wynns goes. IMO this is goodbye to sucre. He won’t go to AAA. I believe Severino has an option left which would be desirable if/when we want to call up wynns. I believe wynns would’ve made the time along w Sisco had he not been hurt this spring. I also don’t see us carrying 4 catchers on the 40 man either.

as a Nats fan i’m sad to see Pedro go for nothing. i thought he has definite potential. certainly behind the plate and his arm. the bat may come. he’s hitting over .400 this spring. maybe his time will come in Baltimore?
