Cubs To Place Jon Lester On Injured List

By Jeff Todd | April 9, 2019 at 12:12pm CDT

The Cubs are preparing to place starter Jon Lester on the 10-day injured list, according to Jesse Rogers of ESPNChicago.com (via Twitter). He was due to undergo further medical examination today after suffering a hamstring injury yesterday.

It still isn’t known how serious the injury is. Lester indicated after the game that he felt optimistic, even suggesting he might not need to miss a start. But he’ll be shelved for at least an outing or two with the IL placement.

Losing Lester, even for a brief stretch, will present another obstacle for a Cubs team that has stumbled out of the gates. He has been the anchor of the Chicago rotation ever since he landed with the organization, continuing to produce good results of late even as his stuff and peripherals have faded.

The Cubs would typically just turn the ball over to Mike Montgomery, but he’s hurt. That could mean that Tyler Chatwood will reenter the rotation, though his control problems have yet to abate in a relief role. Alec Mills represents another 40-man possibility.

You know the grand plan to sign Machado, that the White Sox had worked on since July. The plan that was heavily incentive based on plate appearances, that anyone with a brain knows the team can control. The plan that no superstar in their right mind would sign. That’s all the White Sox could come up with since working on it since last July. That Machado…

The Cubs May have some terrible contracts like Heyward, but at least stars want to play for them, unlike the cities second team White Sox.

Cubs have scored 10 or more in 5 of 10 games. Won 2. #1 offense, dead last in pitching. They actually have a couple of pitchers in the minors to try. But not in place of Lester. Not good.

Haha… sadly no one takes them seriously. I tuned in for a few minutes to see the much anticipated (at least by thirsty W Sux fans) of the great E Santana today. Of course he wet himself and of course you could literally count how many (technically how few) fans were in the seats. Just sad, just pathetic. They get out drawn by minor league teams. No wonder Machado turned him down. His agent called and said “Chicago has a great offer!” Manny “The Cubs?!?!?” Agent “Oh, ummm no, the White Sox” Manny “Hahahaha, NO. I’d rather play for the F’n Padres… and you’re so fired”.

Hopefully Jon Lester’s MRI will show nothing and that he can return to the rotation after his 10 day IL stint. The Cubs don’t have many other SP options with their “financial” limitations, Mike Montgomery already on the IL and little help at AAA. At this point it is down to Tyler Chatwood and some assistance from the weather gods who may help them out with an unscheduled off-day as soon as tomorrow with rain, sleet and snow in the Chicago forecast.

When Tom Ricketts was trying to convince daddy Joe that buying the Cubs would be a good business move, one of things he mentioned was that Cubs fans will turn out no matter how bad the team is.

Now that Tom got his WS, I think that Joe wants to test that statement. No payroll increases.

Craig Kimbrel makes more sense for the Cubs and would be a less expensive investment. That being said, Tom Ricketts keeps beating around the bush every time he opens his mouth publicly about the Cubs current financial situation but is essentially crying poor when it comes to opening the purse strings to acquire either FA pitcher.

bush1, yeah? Who might these people be that want to play for the cubs. I recall atleast two catchers who turned down the cubs to go elsewhere. Even Chavez, who claimed to want to be a chu, er, cub, left for more money. You see, the reality is no one wants to play for a cheapskate. Both Chicago teams fit that description.

What are you talking about? There’s all kinds of stars that want to play for the Cubs. It was well known Harper wanted the Cubs bad, but they didn’t have the cap space. The Cubs were one of the 3 teams Stanton was willing to waive his no trade along with the Dodgers and Yanks.
Along with many others. It’s abundantly clear the Cubs are a team that most big time free agents/superstars want to play for. It’s not hidden information.

First off, Boras merely used the cubs as leverage. There was never any serious interest. Same for the Sox and a few other teams.

As for being a choice destination, cubs offered two high profile catchers a contract this past offseason. Both passed on the cubs to go elsewhere, so what are you talking about?

Let’s check that average over the last 10 years for cub wins. Did you forget that tanking team from 2010 to 2015? Last place 5 years in a row ?

Those catchers didn’t sign with the Cubs because the Cubs have one of the best catchers in the game and they’d rarely play. You know the guy that’s absolutely mashing right now, Contreras. So backup catchers are an idiotic example. I’m talking about superstars and where they want to play. Harper did want to play for the Cubs, but believe what you want.

Contreras can hit a little, but he’s terrible behind the plate. You tell by their body language that none of the cubs pitchers like the way he frames pitches or calls games. He can’t ever sit still or get set without distracting his pitcher. He moves his glove around like he’s on meth or something. Anyway, neither McCann or the other veteran catcher (name escapes me) is starting anymore. So your point is moot. Guys don’t want to play for the cubs because they don’t pay enough. The only reason Darvish came there is no other team offered a longterm deal.

I’m serious when asking this, but as a White Sox fan, whose team is always at the bottom of payroll and who is currently spending well under $100 Million less than the Cubs how can you argue the Cubs don’t pay enough? I mean what the heck is your own team doing then? I know the Sox are rebuilding yet again, but it’s not even remotely close, and the White Sox will never spend the type of money the Cubs are now even when they’re computing. Why even argue this as a White Sox fan? I’m more curious than anything?
Sure, the Cubs have made mistakes on contracts, and it hurt their ability to spend this year. But clearly spending is something they do much more then most teams, and especially the White Sox.

As far as Contreras goes, sure he has flaws but there’s no doubt he’s above average. So you’re going to bring the backup catchers as evidence that superstars don’t want to play for the Cubs? That argument doesn’t make much sense either.
The Cubs have made mistakes, no doubt. But spending is something they do way more of then what you’re team does. It’s blatantly obvious. Why even go there?

I don’t get it… the Cubs have the 2nd highest payroll in the league and they’re still cheap? Does that not make you a troll?

Haha….love it when the Cub fans are more concerned about the White Sox attendance than their own team..haha.

Big loss for the cubs. Hopefully he comes back shortly. They won’t go after Dallas as they have reached their budget unless they wanna take the luxury tax hit this year before salary comes off the books after the season ends

The Cubs have the third highest payroll in baseball. And they’re spending over $100 MILLION MORE than the White Sox!! How I’m the world can a White Sox fan argue this! Sure, Contreras isn’t perfect, but the guys they would have signed would’ve been backups and not played much. My point 100% still stands. I really can’t believe I’m arguing about what a team pays with a White Sox fan and that’s mind blowing. The White Sox would never approach a $200 million payroll. What a joke
