Tigers Place Jordan Zimmermann On IL With UCL Sprain

By Jeff Todd | April 26, 2019 at 5:27pm CDT

5:27pm: It seems as if Zimmermann is expected to be able to rehab the injury without surgery, MLB.com’s Jason Beck reports on Twitter. Team trainer Doug Teter says that the veteran will wait for five to seven days before he begins working back. It’s at least possible Zimmermann could return to the active roster within three or four weeks.

3:05pm: The Tigers announced today that righty Jordan Zimmermann has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow. He’ll be replaced on the active roster by fellow right-hander Zac Reininger.

That’s certainly ominous news for the veteran hurler, who left his start yesterday with elbow troubles. Zimmermann is already pitching on a replacement UCL after previously undergoing Tommy John surgery. It’s not known at this point whether a surgical outcome is on the table.

Nice play on words but realistically it’s probably closer to be Manning time. No, not Archie, Peyton or Eli. I’m talking about Matt.

Thought it was a really good 1 at the time. History of pitching many + strong innings. big and strong body. Might have lost tick or 2 on FB when signed, but he just seemed to fall apart

Kyle Funkhouser would have been next in line, but the wheels completely fell off this year. He can’t make it through the first inning. Too bad. Does anybody know what’s up with Grayson Long?

They fell off last year. And the year before. Its sad but he has totally lost the plot and has zero control. Its the pitching version of the golfing yips.

Its a shame the Tigers can’t get their remaining $50M worth from Jordan Zimmermann. Fortunately, for the Tigers, it opens a spot the next two seasons to review other pitchers who could force themselves to be considered in the plans for the target year 2021.

Why Zac Reininger? He’s not at all MLB ready. I’d rather see LH Caleb Thielbar and his exceptional SO:BB ratio.

But if his contract is covered by insurance this may actually be a financial win for the Tigers, which is horrible to say for Zimmerman

Too bad, he was pitching so well in his first 2 starts and ok much of last year. Hope he isn’t done. There is no chance Mize or Manning come up prior to September. Likely not until next September. I could see Avila going out and picking up someone from the scrap heap. Maybe they stretch Hardy out again when he returns.

Most likely Burroughs will be the first of the youngsters to get a big league look. Mize, Fadeo, Manning are 2020 and more likely 2021 while Perez and Fadeo are in that 2020/2021 range.
