Braves Select Jerry Blevins, Release Jonny Venters

By Ty Bradley | May 18, 2019 at 2:57pm CDT

The Braves are again shaking up the bullpen, selecting the contract of lefty Jerry Blevins, who’d been designated and outrighted earlier in the week after clearing waivers, to replace fellow lefty Jonny Venters, who’s been issued his release by the club. (Twitter link via MLB.com’s Mark Bowman).

The latest chapter in the renaissance project for three-time Tommy John surgery survivor Venters, 34, didn’t go as planned. Though the lefty threw just 4 2/3 IP for a shaken Atlanta pen, he allowed three homers and walked eight over the frame. His average fastball velocity still registers at a competitive 93.0 MPH, so he may yet have some juice left in the tank, but it seemingly won’t be deployed for the team with whom he initially made his mark.

Blevins, 35, has been on a whirlwind tour in the last week, and he’ll again find himself at SunTrust Park for the back half of Atlanta’s weekend series with Milwaukee. Blevins has been left-handed kryptonite over the course of his 13-year MLB career, holding southpaws to a sickly .215/.271/.315 career mark. His numbers, though, have slipped considerably over the last two seasons – the lefty’s been homer prone for nearly the first time – and he hasn’t held lefties in comparable check.

It’s the latest in an early-season lefty exodus from the Atlanta ’pen, as the club had already sent down penciled-in set-up man A.J. Minter and designated Jesse Biddle for assignment.

Wow! What a turn of events. 2 batters in last night I thought he was looking pretty ok, then suddenly he had a meltdown and that’s the end of Johnny. Then previous article said something about not knowing if Belvins would stay a braves then BAM! Dude, Jesse biddle, better watch out. Braves fans are getting restless with that bullpen! Starting to get cut throat

Is the front office interested in trading live talent for bullpen upgrades?

      Or just waiver wire adds?

Nothing to do with the front office. Any failure falls on Liberty Media for flat out lying to the fans and using the Braves finds to pay off their own debts.

Well the nationals could use another guy to blow leads/fail to hold the deficit.

Just a matter of time before the Braves/Nationals/Cubs start poaching relievers from the Giants, which is literally the only bright spot on that team.

What other measure is there then wins? That’s why they play.

Oh cool! In that case Braves are 2018 WS champions. Since wins don’t matter now.

Have to look at who had the tougher schedule and how the rest of the division is performing but the Nats are still bad even considering these things so I don’t know ‍♂️

And which of the loser contracts do you wish to Braves it taken on? All of the big bullpen contracts that were given out over the winter have turned into albatrosses around the neck of the team they signed with. Our bullpen is bad, but at least we’re not paying a fortune to be bad.

Where did i say sign ANY free agents!? One has to look no further than the Edwin Diaz trade for examples of building a bullpen.. Some of you guys just automatically assume free agency all too often!

delusional Diaz was only getting moved with cano. Braves played the smart hand this offseason letting the pitching develop we have so many sp prospects backed up in the minors causing a log jam that it was worth trying them out and shuffling the roster constantly. You can’t win with every prospect but we’ve had several step it up in the pen for the ones who have stunk.

They didn’t need a big name contract. They should have resigned Brad Brach who has a 2.45 era with the Cubs. Plus many forget that Darren O’Day has been hurt all year. I’m sure AA was counting on O’Day to be healthy which would have been a good addition to the pen.

“A shutdown bullpen”? How the hell was anybody going to build a shutdown bullpen with your top 5 pitchers out of the pen are not even with the team a quarter of the way through the season? Viz on the DL,Minter and Sobotka sucking. Venters and probably Biddle no longer with the organization. You might could put Winkler in there also and he’s been up and down from AAA like a yoyo. AA was just suppose to go out and trade or sign 6 new relievers in the offseason and build a shutdown bullpen? Stupidest comment I ever heard.

Hard to say anything negative about Venters, no matter how much he’s struggled this year. What a trooper, and I hope he finds success elsewhere if he wants to keep at it.
