Giants Select Mike Yastrzemski, Designate Mac Williamson

By Ty Bradley | May 25, 2019 at 12:44pm CDT

The Giants have selected the contract of OF Mike Yastrzemski and designated OF Mac Williamson for assignment, mlb.com’s Maria Guardado was among those to report.

Yastrzemski, 28, is famously the grandson of hall-of-fame Red Sox outfielder Carl Yastrzemski, and will make his major league debut tonight after parts of seven seasons in the minors. With AAA-Sacramento this season, the Vanderbilt product slashed a hefty .316/.414/.676, a line perhaps slightly more impressive than some of his PCL peers, given the relative lowlands of his home environs as compared to the moon-landing surfaces of certain division rivals. Still, as with all new arrivals from Triple-A in the dawn of a new, juiced-ball era, caution should reign: a startling 17 players still boast an OPS north of 1.000 in the Coast League, and one must scroll assiduously to finally stumble upon a group that doesn’t check in above the .800 mark.

This’ll be the second DFA this season for the 28-year-old Williamson, who was recalled earlier this month after a brief AAA bash fest of his own. Mac slumped badly in SF, striking out in nearly 32% of his plate appearances on the way to a .118/.211/.196 line in 57 plate appearances for the orange and black. His presence wasn’t the salve for the outfield woes that have plagued the Giants for the better part of three seasons now, though new president of baseball ops Farhan Zaidi remains aggressive in the search for a cure.

The revolving door in the Giants outfield continues. This team needs to blow it up.

Better hitting ballpark, not playing every day and other variables. Not an everyday player and was not going to help the Giants get younger

What’s up BayTown. I’d say they give him a couple weeks. Mac got a pretty good look but his mentality just doesn’t match his physical ability. Maybe Yas has a good head on his shoulders and will be able to handle the pressure of MLB. -DaleCooperFBI

i figured after going 0-5 with a horrendous 5 strikeouts that his time was ticking fast. At least he had his opportunity to show if he can handle MLB pitching, and he failed pretty badly. Hopefully Yaz can do alot better. I still feel Austin Slater should get a chance, and is better IMO

Thank you Mr. Zaidi, you finally woke from your nappy poo. No disrespect to Mac, but over the past several years the Giants organization has given him plenty of opportunities to be a successful major league ball player. Unfortunately, he didn’t seize any of his chances. It is definitely time to blow up the team, considering at this rate, they will be 20 games out at the all star break. Get a head start and shop anyone who will bring back something in return. By the end of the season you’ll be lucky to have an average of 15,000 fans in the stands, and I’m being generous. I certainly will not be taking my family up north this year. Prove to your loyal fan base that you are serious about a rebuild. I would even consider cutting ties with some of the outrageous contracts, especially those who just show up to get a paycheck. The team appears lifeless and you need to do something to prove you mean business. Sad way for Bochy to end his Hall of Fame career. SMH

I’ve never seen it as empty as it was last night. There were entire rows of bleachers without anyone in them. 15K may be low, but the stadium is starting to look half full during the week.

Season ticket holders can’t even get rid of their seats in the resale market. Sad. Great seats are a bargain now. Yesterday and today will make attendance worse. Of course I’m stupid enough to still go to games, I am not a fair weather fan but I get why so many aren’t sticking with the team now. I don’t think it’s from lack of effort from our players, I think they still try. But they’ve run out of gas and confidence

You’re exactly right. Secondary market tickets that were 125% of box office prices even last year are 75% if face this year. Theres no shame in sticking with them. Getting great seats at a steal and not waiting an hour in the bathroom lines are a win-win.

Mike Yaz was a low round draft pick but has kept at his craft for 7 years. In a year where the Giants are out of the race already why not give him a shot. Changing organizations this spring seemed to do wonders for him. Hopefully Captain Carl will be able to watch him play in San Francisco today.

What they need to do is; Let shaw play LF, Duggar CF, Slater in RF and let that ride the rest of season. If they struggle at first let them play through it and see if they are worth being apart of the future, not like they going to make playoffs this year anyway. Keep Austin for a back up, get rid of Pillar, get rid lf solano and bring up Avelino. Get rid of Pomeranz and bring Beede back. Stop letting the prospecs age jn the minors. Hate how the Giants organization moves their prospects up so slow.

MacAss HeadTrauma Williamson RIP, Long overdue.. 28-Year-old left fielder., Replaced by another wanna-be 28-year-old left fielder Yaz.
Other youngsters waiting in the wings a pair of 26-year-old left fielders Slater and Gerber.
Is Heliot in AA yet? Half a season in Richmond and possibly he is ready next year.
Here is the garbage the Giants need to jettison.
Retire Buster Posey. Don’t insult him by trading him. But he is toast. No power, no rbi’s now a pretender at the plate. Is Joey Bart in AA yet?

Move Austin to first base. Dump Belt for a couple of low prospects. If necessary buy part of his remaining contract. There is not a player in the MLB who umpires hate more. His whining about the strike zone is killing the other Giant hitters.

Move Longhonoria. I don’t know if the Giants have a prospect for 3rd base. But this virus needs to be eradicated from the clubhouse. Buy out his contract. Invest fifty K in Jenny Craig and send Pablo to the Jenny Craig workout camp. If he loses fifty pounds he might be able to play third three times a week.at two hundred fifty pounds.

Get Brandon Goldilocks into shape. Hire a nanny for Crawford so he doesn’t have to change diapers. Conjunctivitis is reason enough. Shave Crawfords head. That will drop ten pounds. Think of the added fielding range Goldilocks will have.

Get rid of the one week wonder “What’s his Name” we got from Toronto. Rice Pilaf can’t hit. Trade him for a couple of AA players.

Speaking of head-cases. Send Holland and Pomegranate away. Who needs starting pitchers who have ERAs over 6. Holland has been stellar out of the bullpen. NOT.

Dump Samardzija for a bags of used jocks. See ya, Jeff. Buy up his contract. Let him flounder elsewhere.

Keep Bum just for fun and to aggravate the faithful. When does Cueto return? He is the best pitcher on the staff.

The rotation from here on should be Bumgarner, Suarez, Anderson, Rodriques, Santos.
In September bring Cueto out of hibernation.

Lol, you are definitely right about Longo. Tampa Bay is still laughing that they were able to ruse Bobby Evans into making that trade. The Rays knew he was on the decline of his career. Last year the excuse for him was he needed to adjust to national league pitching. That guy has no passion and is simply happy collecting a paycheck.

Coors Field plays like a pinball machine. Do the Rockies lead the west in attendance? Those that love the game circa 1955-1980 grew up loving and watching pitchers dual. Not enough runs for your liking? Leave the walls where they were built. Construct your team to play in this beautiful stadium. It has been done before.

Fans were begging the Giants to give Mac ANOTHER chance even though he had a history of not doing well in the majors (most of the time). Gerber played only three games and think he did well in Spring training and certainly is doing well in AAA. 3 games isn’t a ‘look’, it’s a fleeting glance
