Nationals Claim Javy Guerra, Designate Dan Jennings

By Steve Adams | May 22, 2019 at 5:24pm CDT

WEDNESDAY: Jennings has elected to become a free agent, the Nationals announced.

MONDAY: The Nationals announced that they’ve claimed right-hander Javy Guerra off waivers from the Blue Jays and designated veteran lefty Dan Jennings for assignment to open a spot on the 40-man roster. Toronto had designated Guerra for assignment last week.

Guerra, 33, appeared in 11 games with the Jays to open the season and has turned in 14 innings of 3.86 ERA ball with a 15-to-5 K/BB ratio and a 27 percent ground-ball rate. It’s a solid showing, though it comes on the heels of a 5.55 ERA in 35 2/3 frames with the Marlins last season. The Nationals, however, need bullpen help perhaps more than any club in the game and will hope that Guerra can maintain his early success from Toronto and stabilize a relief corps that has been the worst in MLB in terms of ERA (6.60) and xFIP (5.15) as well as 25th in FIP (5.03).

Washington brought the 32-year-old Jennings aboard last month under similar circumstances, hoping that he could help to smooth things over. That didn’t prove to be the case, however, as he was tagged for seven runs on eight hits and seven walks with nine strikeouts in just 4 2/3 innings. A team in less dire circumstances might’ve given Jennings a bit more leash given his strong track record, but the Nats are eight games under .500 and eight games back in the NL East.

I pretty much figured there was little to no chance he would make it through waivers

The Nats need an open tryout for relievers.

i know it’s cliche, but this really is rearranging deck chairs on the titanic at this point. at least the Mariners trade netted them some upside.

They kept Matt Grace over Dan Jennings….

Probably had to do with money. Cutting Jennings now probably saved them something. Grace goes when Sipp returns imo, which will be soon as he’s on rehab.

Good for Javy. He belongs in the majors with a manager that won’t overuse him and he’ll be very good.

On another note, today the BoSox are having a good day in batting practice against the BlueJays.

The BlueJays tanking is going rather well, even if it is unintentional and due to the incompetance of Ross Atkins.

Sad, I think he’s been decent for the Jays this year when he’s been given a chance. It seems that many of the guys that do ok this year that they either DFA or send to Buffalo! I’d like to think it’s all part of some well thought out plan by Shapiro and Atkins, but I don’t actually believe that! ‍♂️

What has Blue Jay Management done so wrong?

What haven’t they done wrong, maybe should be the question?

Call into Jaystalk. You’ll fit right in with the knowledge base there.

How did this guy get designated in the first place? I actually had him on my fantasy team for a hot second for Holds.

I am so happy Danny J is gone. I called this two weeks ago. It seemed like he was giving up 2 runs in 2/3 of an inning each time out

Blue Jays clearly feel Derek Law is the superior thrower. Hopefully Guerra proves them wrong in Washington.
